Mpesa has an app that makes things easier. You can link the mpesa app to your bank app/card. I don't know about mpesa points but if you accumulate enough bonga points, you can do pretty much anything with them (redeem flights, meals, shopping and so on)
@@nubianpwr There are some m-pesa transactions which charges a few but I'm 99% certain that when I loaded it with cash that there were no fees. BTW, when I say cash, I mean shillings and not dollars.
@@nubianpwr There is absolutely no fee to change cash into Mpesa. Once you change your foreign currency into local currency; you just walk to any mpesa agent and load your money. Who lied to you? 😂😂
I noticed a Bilt credit card in your thumbnail. Is that part of your travel credit cards plan? I hope you're aware that Bilt got hacked at the beginning of this year 😱😱. Never heard of the m-pesa thing. Will have to take that in mind if I visit Kenya.
I'm not an expert about m-pesa. Actually, I was confused at timed because they are different types of m-pesa payments which leaves me a bit confused. In a previous video, a person broke it down for me which I kept and will refer to it once I'm on the plane back to Kenya.
I was told that some of the Uber drivers try to rip people off and not stick to using the app and change the price. Have you ever experienced this? If so how do you avoid this?
I see it as some drivers will seek to go off app but that's a decision you need to make before you take off. Before we take off, I agree that I will only be using the Uber app. Given that I take lots of ubers when in Nairobi, I have a sense as to what I'm prepared to pay so if they want to go off-app, I might agree to a fixed price before taking off. However, I don't consider it that they're looking to cheat you. They're just negotiating which is something that I love to do.
@@RichardDebs I understand. I'm talking about drivers going off the app after they've agreed, trying to change things half way through the ride and rip people off.
I know that only a few folks are interested in this topic but I needed to put this out there for Americans traveling to Kenya because I know that they will have questions.
How high are the m-pesa fees per transaction? I read that in Kenya it is 20% as no competitors exist (funny sidenote - Kenian Gov. is a shareholder of m-pesa so no wonder all the applications from other service providers were „lost“ in a fire and due to Kenian burocracy reduction legislation you can file any kind of application only 1x)
I don't know all the m-pesa rules given that there are many ways to send money via m-pesa. However, the fee I'm charged is 2%. Kenyans nor I nor anyone in their right mind would use m-pesa if it costs 20% to send money. Again, I don't know all the use-cases of m-pesa as I only use it for the occasional tuk-tuk ride and to purchase souvenirs. I'm all in with my usage of credit cards here in Kenya!
Lies sending money UpTo sh 999 charges are sh 6 . Buying using pay bill zero charges. Withdrawing is where you use at least a higher %. For instance withdrawing sh 1500 you use sh 28

Once you come in Kenya to use Mpesa services you need to change your dollar money into Kenyan shillings and making a deposit to you Mpesa is free but withdrawal is not
I use my U.S debit card to withdrawn shillings from the ATM. My U.S debit card does not charge foreign transaction fees. Then I take the KSHs to an m-pesa both to have them load it for me for free. But yes using mpesa in kenya, there is often a small transaction fee which is not significant compared to using a credit card should the merchant decide to add a fee to it.
@@triplem7774 Just saying that there is no fee to use my U.S debit card to withdraw shillings from an ATM in Kenya. Obviously there is the exchange rate but that's not a fee. Then there is no fee to deposit the shillings that I take from the ATM to my m-pesa account. Perhaps I'm not fully understanding what you're asking.
No idea how you can recover funds. Just be mindful to use credit cards at establishments. The only time I use my debit cards is when I withdraw funds from a bank directly.
So any m-pesa experts out there? Are there rewards programs etc? What about linking m-pesa with a credit card? Speak!

There is a % fee to turn cash into M-pesa. As an American, I hated that, and never used m-pesa while in Kenya.

sendwave or remitly then connect with your debit then you can send money to your mpesa number, its cheaper and safer
