The Albion closed in 2023 unfortunately due to a fire and hasn't re-opened. Was a decent pub that me, my father and godfather went in one time. Shame it's closed now. Was a nice cosy pub. Great video mate and nice to see you doing videos on South Tyneside. A Hebburn local myself. So been through Jarrow many times so nice to see!
Brilliant job! I remember drinking in Jarrow town centre in the eighties. Loads of bars and all rammed at the weekend, especially Sunday. When the metro line extended to South Shields, it killed the scene almost overnight. Great memories!
Great video Eddie. Lived in Jarrow all my life (36 years) and like a lot of people who live there, I’m proud of my Town. The history is so rich, going back hundreds and hundreds of years. Jarrow was one of the very first places the Vikings raided in the 700s, docking their ships by the Don monastery (St Paul’s Church) and sacking the villages nearby. Funny enough, I believe the raid was unsuccessful with a Viking leader being killed by those defending the land (no surprises there given the stubbornness of Jarrow folk!) Saint Bede, unless I’m mistaken, translated the Bible into English. I could be wrong on that one. But he was iconic for Christianity.
Excellent video Eddie, and I used to do the bottling up in the Royal Oak (The Longbar) when I was a kid aged about 8 or 9.. as my mate’s Dad (Albert) was the landlord. Many happy memories of the place with long weekends playing pool, darts and space invaders there. Guessing some of the regulars from 45 years ago are long gone - Hope the rest are doing well.

Jarrow was also home to Perth Green Boxing Club Eddie- Ran by the Dean's Family. Brian, Frankie, Tony, Billy, Colin, and Paul all boxed for the club winning many National honours and did well in the professional game as promoters. They ran boxing tournaments from the early 1960's until the late 1990's at the Neon Social Club where I boxed many times. Sadly the Neon is no more it was demolished about 5 years ago. Sadly, only Colin and Paul remain from the famous boxing family. Colin lives in London now and I am still in contact with him.

One thing you didnt mention was Irish immigration to jarra. At one time jarra was 80%i Irish i beleive. My grandad told stories of trouble in the local bars between irish catholics and local protestants but it thanfully died off and became a good community. When i was at school in jarra late seventies and eighties the classes were filled with people with Irish surnames
Hello Eddie, thanks for another very interesting film about the North East. My (our) grandfather was from Jarrow & fought in the First World War. He won the Military Medal & in recognition of this the people of Jarrow presented him with a gold pocket watch. I understand that all of the citations (records) of medals awarded in the First World War were destroyed in the blitz of WWII. It is only the families that are able to recall these events. My Grandfather unfortunately passed away in 1934 as a consequence of his injuries, when my father was only six-months old, leaving his wife & four young children. I, his grandson, obviously never met him although we are all immensely proud of him. I have never actually visited Jarrow but I would like to sometime soon because of our family history. Your video has prompted me to do this!! Thank you, Neil
I can remember the Alan Price song being played as we got to Wembley stadium from Wembley Way for the ‘74 FA Cup final. Even though I was just 14 and not from Jarrow, I felt so proud of the marchers that had trekked all that way to fight their cause. It was uplifting.

Most of the pubs have closed the same story. All the big chains of shops are gone and all you see is vape and pawn shops. It might be a bit far out of the areas you cover but Blyth would be a good one to do.

Thanks Eddie great video, brought back many memories from my childhood and teens. I've not been back for over 35 years and so much has changed, i worked in the North Pub for a while so its sad to see its gone too. Hopefully will get over in the next 2 years, its a long trip from here in Thailand :(
That was so interesting Eddy, thanks. I imagine there are hundreds of stories like this from all of the different areas along the river Tyne on both sides, but this is the fist time I have heard in great detail about this march to London. They must have been so determined to do something about their dilemma, and for it to fall on deaf ears? Disgraceful! Thanks again Eddy, keep the videos coming.
This is how it should be done! Also Eddie, congratulations on the 3 years. I can honestly say you’re my favourite channel. I think I have only been a subscriber for around a year but have seen how much you have progressed. The fact you speak absolute facts, and go off evidence, makes you so good to watch. I know it takes a lot of time and effort to do these videos, so I just want to say thank you so much.
What a great video I used to work for the Electricity Board in the Viking centre. I regularly used the pedestrian which used to have the longest wooden escalator in the world not sure if it’s wooden now. Every Monday night we used to go to the Crown N Anchor like you my drink was Mcewsan Scotch . Keep up the excellent work

Hey there Eddie... Another amazing in-depth video about the northeast ... Got to say I'm really loving these videos I hope you can carry the money's long as you can... Until you run out of places ... Ah good, Video was great as usual Eddie. If your doing a South Shieds video you may want to visit the shops at The Nook (Prince Edward Road) as well as King Street, as sometimes The Nook is busier than the Town Centre in my opinion. The Nook has a Great set of shops and places to eat and Pubs 👍
Gateshead was once part of Co Durham but that really has nothing to do with choosing Sunderland as your team. Sometimes it’s a family connection, sometimes it’s just a desire to be different from the crowd, or a particular match, or player catches the imagination 👍🏻
The river that runs through Durham is the Wear also Washington is on the Wear and used to be Co Durham until they annexed the town to be part of Sunderland in the early 70s so they could have big enough numbers to be considered as a city.
The governments have got a lot to answer for with the decline of the towns around the north east Excellent video and jarrow is still a great little town
I remember upgrading my hi-fi back in the mid 80s from Comet in Jarrow. Also Jarrow Elvis was a popular act in the day. If you do one on The Felling Eddy, out of around 30 pubs and clubs in the area around 7 left, it's tragic.

I tried to get a pint in The Oak Tree but it had closed …for good so it would seem from your video. It was good to see an English flag flying from the town hall, which I presume is Labour controlled, this is not something that would be seen in London where the the LGBT+ flag seems to fly from so many civic and public buildings.
Look into the Viking history of the town as well Eddie, hence the Viking centre, likely you covered it in the bede video but I haven’t watched that one yet 👍
We’ve a little soft spot for jarra !! It always reminds me of my Nanna. Also I used to know a of bloke called Eddy who used to drink in the Ben Lomond regular…he’s no longer with us now 🥃
The Albion gin and ale house actually only closed in October after a fire. It was really popular and last I heard they were still hoping to reopen, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.
Great video, interesting watch. Pity you didn't go into Christ Church (across the road from the Ben Lomond), that was where they left for the march to Jarrow. There's actually a plaque in there with the info on it.
I worked in the jarrow town hall, my first day on the job I witnessed a full on fight between two grown men in the street, my colleagues said just leave them someone always fights outside 😂

Jarrow is a large town sith approx 50,000 folk the town centre is the smallest part , it has huge housing estates and a few more pubs on these estates , also has as many Sunderland fans as Newcastle , a proud tough breed who have been shat on by all governments...
Jarrow had 54 pubs in the town centre, now it has 3. These discovering Tyneside videos concentrate on the town centres, I’m aware of the larger conurbation. Jarrow is no way 50/50 ish in terms of support. It is vastly NUFC Thank you for watching 👍🏻

@@PMS-zv5es I have many followers on my channel from Jarrow who would disagree with you bud. 14 seconds in the man resting on the metro railings is Paul Perry local photographer and historian, he's wrote loads of books about Jarrow, most of the pics you used are probably his, what's the chances of that happening.
Back when I was younger me and me mate would ride are bikes with are fishing rods tied to are bikes from battle hill threw the pedestrian tunnel all the way to south shields pier to go fishing for the day
First place along with York that the vikings invaded and the locals fought them off and killed a few including the leader ...those that were captured stayed in jarrow and married n had children hence why they say viking ancestors...

Shocking to see how dead the town center is I remember when I used to go to Woolworths for me music .. was cassette back then Eddie mate
I cannot believe you never mentioned the great Jarrow Arrow / Steve Cram / Top Sunderland Fan.
Aye it was canny that like Eddy .
Nowt like an easy watch vid while I wind Doon n scran me tea n that.
cheers marra 🤝
Look into the Viking history of the town as well Eddie, hence the Viking centre, likely you covered it in the bede video but I haven’t watched that one yet 👍
Great job eddy 👍🏽
Keep up the good work jealous of your adventures lol
Love these videos eddie
We’ve a little soft spot for jarra !! It always reminds me of my Nanna. Also I used to know a of bloke called Eddy who used to drink in the Ben Lomond regular…he’s no longer with us now 🥃
That building behind the Charles palmer statue is being converted into a new pub, will boost it up to 4. 2 clubs as well.
Looking forward to this one Eddy mate close to home for me
Hope you enjoy it Scott. You missed a great pub crawl!
@TynesideLife i know mate sorry about thay mate i had to work instead i was absolutely gutted
Good stuff mate 👍
I would like a seperate video on the Tyne Tunnel please Mr Hope!!!

The Albion gin and ale house actually only closed in October after a fire. It was really popular and last I heard they were still hoping to reopen, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.
That was quick Eddie. Only seen you filming this this afternoon
Great video, interesting watch. Pity you didn't go into Christ Church (across the road from the Ben Lomond), that was where they left for the march to Jarrow. There's actually a plaque in there with the info on it.
The plaque on the old town hall offices states the march started from that spot? I’ve included the plaque on the video 👍🏻
I worked in the jarrow town hall, my first day on the job I witnessed a full on fight between two grown men in the street, my colleagues said just leave them someone always fights outside 😂
😂
Take a listen to a song called " the town that died" by local band CRASHED OUT out , deeply saddening and still relevant. Great video.
I think they did a cover of The Jarrow Song too
@@TynesideLife yes they do mate. Great band.
Where's last nights Staveley "reaction" video gone?
Jarrow !!!has been run down for many many years😊
Brilliant vlog plz do Hebburn
yay my home town
Just watched this video I’m currently working for a company opening a pub on the Viking Center 👍
Great news. What’s the pub going to be called?
@@TynesideLife going to be called the Charles palmer mate I was blown away when you said about the 200 people march from jarrow to London like unbelievable that 👍
Jarra born jarra bread jarra proud ❤❤❤
Greatest place on earth
My mam and dad were running the Ben Lomand when I came into this world in 1963 and to where I was brought home to after being born in Gateshead
Jarrow Crusaders was decent boozer used to go in on lunch break from Rohm & Haas
Did you not want to say Steve Cram, Eddie as he is a Mackem. I dont know if he is from the Town but ran for Jarrow.
Good bit of history Mate.
The Venerable Bede. Father of English History. Probably the most famous historical figure connected with Jarrow.
It is vastly NUFC
Thank you for watching 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife lol jarrow is 50/50 safc nufc lived here all my life sorry but i know my town n the folk in it huge safc support here in fact was more safc especially after the 73 cup final .. Keegan came and some changed colours , ask anyone in jarrow theyll tell u its 50/50 same as south shields
@@PMS-zv5es I have many followers on my channel from Jarrow who would disagree with you bud. In fact one of the first comments on this video is a lad from Jarrow called Scott (all his life) and he puts it at 90/10 to Newcastle.
I also lived in Hebburn for a few years so I’m quite familiar with the area. We’ll just have to agree to disagree. 👍🏻
All the best 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife 90/10 absolutely hilarious hes pulling your leg .... its 50/50 the same as south shields do yaself a favour n go to fellgate metro station etc on a safc matchday n you will see , ... when you live here grow up here go to school here you sort of figure things out lol ...
As I said, I’m taking this info from Jarrow residents, like yourself, who would fiercely disagree. I’m sure there are quite a few Sunderland fans getting the metro from Fellgate. 👍🏻
I’ll know more when I do a poll in South Shields to see what the fan distribution is.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
I thought McEwans Best was terminated ..wow.!!!!😊❤it must be 30 + years since i last supped a pint . Ive searched off 'n on for cans or bars when ive been back in uk .. do you (or anyone ) know of any newcastle or sunlnd centric bars that stock it ??? It used to be my fave tipple. 😮 i think pennywelll club still does it but im not venturing there ,even being a mackem 😂😂😂im coming home next week for a month it would be great to try it.
2 digs at Sunderland in this video. Haway man Eddie, there's quite a few red n white followers who enjoy and subscribe to your channel. I'd personally love to see you do some content on Washington. Lots of history to cover here and we're half and half when it comes to footy 😁
It’s all tongue in cheek banter Mick, you should know my style by now 😃
Washington is on the list 👊🏻👍🏻
@@mickadganjad tbf his page is called Tyneside life Mick ha
av to change it tp tyne and wear life if gans to washy, aint it part of sunderland now, well since the 70s i beleive
@@psmith77271 I’ve done 4 videos in Sunderland my man. Three of them as a toon fan interviewing Sunderland fans at SOL.
@@TynesideLife haha i am new to channel so need watch back log.
I was born peterlee, worked all our north east, 99% of nufc and sund fans seem to mix well nee bother in my experiance.
14 seconds in the man resting on the metro railings is Paul Perry local photographer and historian, he's wrote loads of books about Jarrow, most of the pics you used are probably his, what's the chances of that happening.
Bugger! 😫
Back when I was younger me and me mate would ride are bikes with are fishing rods tied to are bikes from battle hill threw the pedestrian tunnel all the way to south shields pier to go fishing for the day
These are absolutely class. What's the crack with all the viking stuff in jarrow?
Cheers. I should have mentioned but the vikings invaded the monastery in AD 794
First place along with York that the vikings invaded and the locals fought them off and killed a few including the leader ...those that were captured stayed in jarrow and married n had children hence why they say viking ancestors...
@@PMS-zv5es that’s not quite what I’ve read in the research I’ve done. Can you provide a reference for this please 👍🏻
Good video. Jarrow was a really good night out with loads of bars. The metro also had a big impact on the decline, many travelling to Newcastle!!!!!
