The dead eyes are perfect. There's a lot of subtlety in this performance: he's not making fun of them to amuse himself, he is just brimming with total contempt. So good.
Even before this whole red state/blue state thing Kaufman was keenly aware of how people in the South saw Hollywood types. It just makes it all the more enjoyable how he devoted/an instigator he was here. I'm From Hollywood where I am a star. Haha. God Bless him
The craft behind his work is that his performances always made you feel uncomfortable and on the edge. Dude was a genius. Smart enough to fake his own death. If anybody could pull it off, it's him There was an underlying theme of controversy in his act.
Andy Kaufman gave wrestling more than many wrestlers. Nobody was or will be great as he was with borderline reality. Special mentions to Brian Pillman and Scott Steiner learning from the best.
His heel work is right up there with Bobby Heenan. He could seriously enrage the crap out of people and get genuine heat and trust me when I tell you this. I'm a lifelong southerner and when you got heat down here you REALLY got heat because we took wrestling RIDICULOUSLY serious and heels were HATED down here. Andy was the man! LOL!
You are 100% right. Andy Kaufman is the man. I watch Man On The Moon and i cryed at the end when Andy Kaufman die of cancer. One of the greatest heel of all time.
@@dalethechipmunk3873 Oh yeah. If you want to see another GREAT Southern Heel and maybe the all time GREAT Southern Heel check out Ron Wright. He is an absolute LEGEND in the south and people would literally try to kill him because they would get so mad at him. His promos are absolute comedy gold! Andy also loved Classy Freddie Blassie and his heel work was really revolutionary as well. Andy even done an improvised comedy movie with him called My Breakfast With Blassie.
Thank you buddy. I'll will watch Ron Wright. Do you think Andy Kaufman is till alive!?? Because some people are saying Andy is faking his death and i really don't know if it's true or not!?? 😮⁉⁉⁉⁉⁉
@@dalethechipmunk3873 I definitely think he's dead but I also think it's hilarious that he was such a performance artist that people could see him doing that. It's actually something I think he would find hilarious.
The best days ever right here in wrestling! AK should had been a professional wrastler!! He has gotta be one of the best heels ever!! Rodney Piper is the best but he is close. I never laughed so hard watching him make fun of the south. I’m from Tennessee grew up in Tx and moved back to my hometown. Always had wrestling in my life. My family thought it was all real and u best not said it wasn’t. This is gold. A true wrestling fan would agree. If you don’t get this or think it’s funny then go on cause you don’t have a damn clue!! Miss these days ..
When I first heard that Vince McMahon did an inter promotional angle between the WWF and Memphis in 1994 I figured Andy would have loved to be in that angle as Vince’s right hand man. Just like he would have loved being in the Rock n Wrestling Connection.
Wrestling rash/injury real or worked. If you watch the "I'm from Hollywood" movie, it shows all his antics down in Memphis and why his face is f**ked up.
Lawler had a gimmick where he threw fire, some kind of flash burn thing. He threw it at Andy's face. It could be fake or could have gone wrong and is real.
40 years later and this is still funny as hell. RIP one of the greatest ever.
I'm crying laughing hearing him say soap with that southern accent 😂
It's priceless!
It's the best! Also love that other promo where he says "Meeeemmmmphis Tyennesseeeeee! Duhhhhhhhh!"
'Sayop!'
Kaufman giving Covid safety tips four decades early.
He was always ahead of the curve.
He should have been Fauci's right hand man!
😆
😂 Good line
Funny thing is this was filmed in Jerry Lawlers front lounge 😂.
The real burn is that last line, "and then... you can shake my hand!"
He really was a germophobe in real life and that's what makes this even more funny.
The dead eyes are perfect. There's a lot of subtlety in this performance: he's not making fun of them to amuse himself, he is just brimming with total contempt. So good.
He’s actually making fun of hollywood types. That’s what’s brilliant about it.?The insults are too over the top to be taken seriously.
Bad take on Kaufman. Also, not "dead eyes", just eyes.
Definitely need to show this to modern wrestling fans.
Because of the showmanship or because they stink?
😆
The greatest performance artist ever!! Case closed
Agreed. Man, the heat he would get.
👍
I found this very informative. I always called it sawp and thought it was poisonous. I appreciate him not being condescending. UT class of 87.
Or if you have any kind of lake near by lmfao😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

Outside of MJF, all modern day wrestlers need to watch this and learn how to do a promo.

Andy died too soon. He would have definitely had some type of roll leading up to Wrestlemania.
Lawler was a genius.
Had to watch this again after WWE HOF induction. As a child I called it soaaup
Back in the good old Kayfabe days.
Genial! :)))
They still air this - in some parts of the south. - the man died a long time ago - or did he? and he is still helping people.
Nice to get some tips on hygiene! So many of the self help gurus are complete frauds, but this advice is very useful.
No was simply getting them to come to the shows playing the heel. “Is that how y’all talk in Memphis Tennessee duh” 🤣🤣
Lawler and Kaufman hated each other....
Not saop, not sop, soap!

Jerry Lawler burnt Andy's face with a fireball.

None of that stuff is true that he's saying soap is used regularly in the south by most but some you never know about
This was not funny at all.
It wasn't supposed to be funny. He's a wrestling heel; it's supposed to provoke.
