the scythe series gets a lot better in the second and third book but it gets kind of dark in my opinion. not like dark romance dark but pretty dark like serious, high high stakes, end of the world dark. some what suspenseful/thriller vibes too. i really loved it though!!
@@RachelCatherine it’s not super dark. It’s just a little bit darker than the first one but still just as good! If you liked the first one you’d like the other ones as well!
Shusterman was my favorite author in middle and high school. I tried reading Scythe and just couldn't get into it. His earlier books Unwind and Everlost are fantastic.
If your library doesn't have a book, usually you can request for them to order it. Then once it comes it, you are first on the list to read it and when you're done, it goes into the system. I do this all the time because I am more of a library reader than a book buyer.
100000% agree on the HOSAF break down!!!! "Would have loved less Bryce being annoying" 😂 "Hunt's there...." lol love it! ❤️ I haven't picked up Emily Wilde yet, I need to get onto that!
6:40 - I felt the same way and rated it 3 stars too but the 2nd book is MASTERPIECE. I'm really picky with my 5 star reads but it deserved it, like everything was 10x better than the first (in my opinion). If you want to give the author another chance I highly recommend!! (slow burn, tension, witty banter, enemies/friends to lovers, taking care of each other, found family etc..)
I totally agree with you about being there just for the vibes.. i recently read fourth wing and absolutely LOVED it but then I watched aome videos where people are tearing the book apart going into teeny tiny details that you would only think about if you were reading a textbook😂 and they even make sense if I were to read the book that critically but I mean.. it's fiction!! just enjoy. Plus, love your videos and accent!!❤
please read thunderhead !!! it is absolutely incredible!! I liked scythe but didn't LOVE it but thunderhead is honestly a favourite book of all time for me
The Scythe series definitely gets better! I think it gets extremely interesting and compelling later on... It's not my usual book that I pick up but I am a big fan of it. You should give the next ones a try if you feel like it!
hunting prince dracula was such a fave for me ! loved the twists in both the first two books of stalking jack the ripper (i havent finished the series but i really need to!) but i found them so fun and exciting!
Imo I loved the two scythe books (the CRUMBS of romance help but it doesn’t amount to anything mind blowing) would recommend sticking around for the second book but wouldn’t recommend the third if you aren’t invested in the world or characters!!
I read All The Light We Cannot See in February and it has such a unique prose. It’s almost like a crossover of literary fiction and a thriller in terms of word choice and pacing. Definitely would consider putting this on a 24 hour reading challenge to get through it. ❤ love your videos!!
My favorites of Feb: Love Me With Lies trilogy by Tarryn Fisher! On the topic of messy, flawed characters, Tarryn always does this well; her writing is stunning as usual. This series has morally grey characters, each book mainly narrated by one of 3 characters in a love triangle. It spans from college years to 10+ years later, quite angsty, full of sabotage & heavy emotion. I love Olivia & Caleb, even with their flaws, so The Opportunist (#1) & Thief (#3) were my faves. Leah's book (Dirty Red, 2) incites anger but somehow a bit of sympathy.
The Stalking Jack the Ripper series sounds really good! I’ll definitely pick it up ☺️ Definitely recommend to keep going with the Raven Cycle, dream thieves focuses on Ronan a lot which was really interesting, I loved it ❤
I do think the scythe series gets better - the second book was my favourite!! But definitely doesn’t change on the themes , if anything the stakes get higher and the plot thickens a lot. But I must admit I’m a huge scythe advocate because it’s one of my fave series!
I love the Scythe series!! The first book also gave me some dark icky feelings, however, the rest of the books get much better and even though they have darker themes it is more political justice, inequality and moral issues rather than the dark murderous chapters of the first. I also pretty sure the Chapters of Godall stop or are greatly lessened (could be wrong tho)
I enjoyed Emily Wilde's enciclopedia of fairies a lot! It was the type of cozy fantasy I was looking for after finding Legends & lattes disappointing. Excited to start map of the worlds soon.
i finished kingdom of ash last month and i am not going to be picking up crescent city any time soon. i mean will sometime, but i think i need a break from the big books with a huge world building. but i am sure a day will come when i get this itch for a book that onli SJM’s books can scratch lol. then , i will pickup crescent city lol
I’m so excited for Emily Wilde book 2, so glad you loved it!! And I also soft DNF’ed All the Light We Cannot See but then I picked up the audiobook like a year later and switched between physical and audio, finished it fairly fast, and it ended up being a 5 star! ❤️
My favorite book I read in February was Ask for Andrea by Noelle Ihli It’s a thriller and it’s kindle unlimited and really short it gave me Ted Bundy + the lovely bones vibes, it’s so so good I highly recommend it!
SOLD! I’ll go start Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries right away On another note, I’ve been avoiding anything to do with Crescent City since it came out, is anyone else? I want to finish TOG first before I start the HOFAS dear Catherine, thank you once again for growing my TBR 😂❤ love your content!!
I read Caraval and Lengendary and loved them!!!! I know you read Caraval already. I loved the 2nd one even more! Can't wait to read Finale. I also read Never and also really liked it a lot! I'm new to Jessa Hastings and can't wait to start the MP universe!!!!! I have found 2 new favorite authors!
You are stunning! Also, I loved All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. However, it took me sooo long to get through because it was heavier, and I have been going through the biggest book slump. I really recommend the show once you get through the book, it really brings it to life.
Scythe was also a 3 star read for me. I enjoyed it, but wasn't fully sold on the world and I found the plot twists predictable. I enjoyed the sequels a lot more though - Thunderhead was a 4 star and The Toll a 4.5 star. They continued to build on the world, why and how things became to be how they are, but also made the characters themselves a lot more interesting.
I just started the Crescent City series and I already think Bryce is annoying 😅🤣 I can’t wait to read HOFAS though! And you convinced me to buy Emily Wilde’s books ❤
I absolutely LOVED the Scythe series, the first book I thought was fabulous and a great foundation. Thunderhead is absolutely fantastic, the third book is good the only book I would stay away from in this series is The Gleanings which is a collection of short stories based in this world and it is bloody awful and put me in the biggest slump so just pretend it doesn’t exist. Hope this helps x
Nearly finished the first magnolia parks book, im late into it, but im loving it so far scared about how i will end. Cannot wait to start the daisy haits books as well, as ive heard such good things about them :)
Have you read “The undertaking of Hart and Mercy?” .. I don’t know if it’s categorized as cozy fantasy but it certainly gives you that vibes and the romance is sooo good! Highly recommend! The cover is also really gorgeous!!
13:34 I had to DNF this because of the gore but loved Kerri Maniscalco’s writing & can’t wait to read Hunting Prince Dracula. If you liked Hunting Prince Dracula you should read The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It is a modern retelling of Dracula. 18:21 This was so good! Thank you for the recommendation Rachel! 19:26 Out of Ali Hazelwood’s books Bride & Love Theoretically are my favorites.
I think you can request that your library purchases the 3rd book in that series. It may have been lost or damaged and since no one as requested it, its gone overlooked that they dont have the 3rd available.
Hi :) just wanted to recommend “one day” by David Nicholls and the Netflix show that’s based on this book just came out in February, it’s really really good.
If you enjoyed The Wishing Game I just finished the ARC of her new novel The Lost Story- if you liked lion witch and wardrobe with Narnia than I'm pretty sure you'd love her newest novel. A magical world all within the hollow of a tree in the woods. Its a beautiful magical and whimsical story
I've just begun HOFAS and I wasn't that big a fan of the two first books. A little because of Bryce, a little because of the multiple POV, but mostly because the LENGTH of the book. Like, it's just too daunting 😂
Just wanted to let you know if you finish with escaping from Houdini (stalking Jack the Ripper book 3) there’s also a novella from Thomas pov which is recommended to read before book 4
You probably dont need any more recommendations, buuut, I would highly recommend anything by Sarah Addison Allen. Would love to hear what you think about some of them. Garden Spells and The Peach Keeper are both five star reads for me.
I just dnfed the second scythe book (thunderhead) roughly 70% in. I really liked the first one but the second one dragged on quite a lot and I felt bored throughout most of it. So I decided to just let it go unfortunately.
You may want to revisit "Scythe" the whole world is interesting and I love the characters well maybe not all of them but it is a really good trilogy. Maybe don't read it after Sarah J. Maas or the Magnolia Park series. OR it might just not be for you but you should recommend it for your audience.
with the scythe series I had fun and I think the other books are definitely similar to the first one but they also get better. but I wasn't really wowed. I had fun but wasn't the best thing ever. should you continue? based on your thoughts of the first one i'd say prolly not worth your time. wouldn't you rather be reading something that's four or five stars than something that is prolly going to be three stars!
I totally agree with you, Bryce was annoying in the first part of the book, I think she should think more before doing something. I would love to see more of Ruhn and Lidia. 🐝💗
Girl I’ve been meaning to ask, do you listen to Benjamin William Hastings worship music? Did you know that’s Jessa Hastings’ husband?! My mind was b l o w n
I cant decide if i want to read magnolia parks series or not!! (Possible Spoiler) i saw some saying there is cheating between the main characters and i hate that

hmmm not sure if I like the whole darker vibe
@@RachelCatherine it’s not super dark. It’s just a little bit darker than the first one but still just as good! If you liked the first one you’d like the other ones as well!
Shusterman was my favorite author in middle and high school. I tried reading Scythe and just couldn't get into it. His earlier books Unwind and Everlost are fantastic.
I know right?? I think the second book was my favorite. It was awesome I literally couldn’t put it down
The way that I’m putting off Magnolia parks into the dark cuz the idea of not having another MP + BJ book afterwards SHATTERS my soul 🥲🥲🥲
literally same. and also knowing how painful it's going to be after the ending of long way home 😭
it's so so sad to be the end but it's such a perfect conclusion in my opinion!!
Same! I’m re-reading the entire series before I read Into the Dark. I re-read the first book last month, currently reading book 2
If your library doesn't have a book, usually you can request for them to order it. Then once it comes it, you are first on the list to read it and when you're done, it goes into the system. I do this all the time because I am more of a library reader than a book buyer.
agreed! my library is in a small town. i’d keep the young adult section stocked and my mom kept the adult section stocked LOL
just a suggestion. It would be so nice if you put how much spice each book has on the screen
Yes this would be so helpful!
Right same with Destiny Sidwell
I second this!
agreed lol!
Yea agree!
all the light we cannot see is actually pretty good!! it’s pretty slow throughout, def not a 5 star, but worth finishing if you can!
100000% agree on the HOSAF break down!!!! "Would have loved less Bryce being annoying" 😂 "Hunt's there...." lol love it! ❤️ I haven't picked up Emily Wilde yet, I need to get onto that!
Scythe trilogy is AMAZING. The second and third books are incredible!!
I loved the scythe series, the second book really picks up ❤
6:40 - I felt the same way and rated it 3 stars too but the 2nd book is MASTERPIECE. I'm really picky with my 5 star reads but it deserved it, like everything was 10x better than the first (in my opinion). If you want to give the author another chance I highly recommend!! okay I'll definitely try the next book!!! I already have it so surely I pick it up soon!!
Scythe is one of my fav series! It does get better in the second book and so much happens, it’s so good
I totally agree with you about being there just for the vibes.. i recently read fourth wing and absolutely LOVED it but then I watched aome videos where people are tearing the book apart going into teeny tiny details that you would only think about if you were reading a textbook😂 and they even make sense if I were to read the book that critically but I mean.. it's fiction!! just enjoy. Now THIS is what I waited for🥹💗
💖💖💖
Scythe gets so much better in the second book. Sooo good!!
I really hope you decide to continue it
please read thunderhead !!! it is absolutely incredible!! I liked scythe but didn't LOVE it but thunderhead is honestly a favourite book of all time for me
I need a magnolia parks universe book from Taura’s perspective!!!! Her character development is my fave
Love the wrap-ups helps me decide if I actually wanna go through with reading the books 😂❤
I remember u said u wanted more fairytale retelling recs and I just wanted to recommend The Grimrose Girls! I feel like u would love it :)
oooh okay I'll add it to my list!! 🥰
Im so glad someone else agrees with me about literally everything you said about cresent city 3!!
The Scythe series definitely gets better! I think it gets extremely interesting and compelling later on... It's not my usual book that I pick up but I am a big fan of it. You should give the next ones a try if you feel like it!

yeah maybe I'll try the second one and see how I feel!!
All The Light We Cannot See is also a Netflix series and I LOVED it!
i love people talking about their love for magnolia parks
My favorite book in Feb was Heartless Hunter. So good!

If you felt kinda meh about scythe, I wouldn't recommend carrying on because they don't get that much better imo
Good morning Rachel happy Monday morning and I hope you having amazing weekend and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing
I am so excited to pick up the first Emily Wilde book! xoxo
JUST SAW YOUR NEW HOMEOWNERS POST CONGRATS!!
Girl you need to read heartless hunter by Kristin Ciccarelli. I just finished it and gave it 5 stars I think you would love this book!

I googled omega-verse … not what I was expected 😅
I totally agree with you, Bryce was annoying in the first part of the book, I think she should think more before doing something. I would love to see more of Ruhn and Lidia. 🐝💗
more lidia!!!

I am interested in reading Scythe but I’m worried it’s gonna put me in a reading slump because I’m a strong romance reader
rach ur absolutely glowing!!!! love that shirt so much, where’d you get it from?🥹ur the reason i read magnolia parks and im so thankful for that ❤
oh thank you so much 🥹 it's from books with jess!! xx
You should buy Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
You’re just my favorite!! Much love from Nashville, please visit💌🥰

I did not like scythe either when I read it 🙃
Have you done magnolia parks tandem read? Or world you do it as a video?
Lots of love from Europe ❤❤❤
I cant decide if i want to read magnolia parks series or not!! (Possible Spoiler) i saw some saying there is cheating between the main characters and i hate that
I too managed to read 11 books last month. I kinda want you to read babel. Have I read it? No. Do I want you to suffer? Respectfully yes
What’s the spice level of Magnolia Parks?
❤❤❤
I hated “all the light we cannot see”
Anyone who’s read it, I want to read emily wildes encyclopedia but should I wait until it’s super springy out? I want to get the best vibes ever
💚🖤
Hey Rachel
I think if you didn't enjoy the first one for Scythe, don't continue on I reckon.
Rachel today is my birthday please please wish me and I really really love to read books so so so much😭😭🥹🥹💖💖
oh happy birthday my sweet friend!!! I hope you have the best day 🥳🎂🎁
@@RachelCatherine Omg Thank you so so much for your lovely wishes my sweet friend 💕💕😘
Honestly, I think the scythe series got worse for me… do not recommend continuing as it DNFd the second one and didn’t read the 3rd
oooh okay 🫢
I love reading, but it's so hard to see that in this industry the majority of the authors are white and we don't see black authors having the same space, it's hard to see that in videos the most of the books reads are written by white authors and with white skinny female characters. No hate at all, just pointing something that make me think.
