Yes and yes. You can do any pen spinning trick with or without a pen mod; it's just generally harder to do tricks without a mod, but it's still possible.
I've competed in a tournament before and only got to round 3 I think. I'm definitely not winning material anymore. My prime was when I was 1.5-2 years into pen spinning, and that was a while ago.
I tend to not do tutorials that involve the trick into another (unless it's a common linkage) because I feel like it's redundant. Doing the bak riser to bak or pinky bak is not too much harder to learn if you can do bak 1.5s (see my tutorial if you can't do those). Since the last few fractions of a revolution of the bak riser (into the catch; see slow mo) are spinning on top of the fingers anyways, this is similar to a bak 1.5 or cont bak.
Bak. As conflicting as it is with the English language, pen spinners named this trick Bak (Riser). I'm not entirely sure why, but my guess it's probably because they wanted to avoid confusion with the Backaround, which is a similar trick.
Hey, speaking of aerial tricks, could you, if possible, do a tutorial on the move where the pen is spinning in midair, and you are able to keep it up by rolling your wrist? It's in the Kuma Films video, and I'm not sure what it's called.

I can't really teach you how to make a pen mod out of parts you found around your house. This is where your creativity comes into play. Additionally, if you're making a pen out of parts you find, chances are I can't help you bc I won't have the same parts plus, it should be tailored to your liking since everyone's preference is different. Just find what you can and start trying new stuff out.

You can get pen mods from penwish and pendolsa. Those are the two big ones. You can also look at auctions that people have posted on UPSB.
