- “Hydrogen Water Has Loads of Evidence” #hydration. Hydrogen water, which is water infused with molecular hydrogen (H2) gas, has gained popularity in recent years for its purported health benefits, including antioxidant properties and potential therapeutic effects. However, despite claims made by proponents of hydrogen water, there is limited clinical support for its use based on existing research, much of which has been conducted in rodents rather than humans. Limited human studies: While there have been some human studies investigating the effects of hydrogen water on various health outcomes, the majority of these studies have been small-scale and of low quality. Many of these studies lack adequate control groups, blinding, and randomization, making it difficult to draw reliable conclusions about the efficacy of hydrogen water. Conflicting results: The findings from human studies on hydrogen water have been mixed, with some studies reporting potential benefits such as improved antioxidant status, reduced inflammation, and enhanced exercise performance, while others have found no significant effects. The inconsistency in results highlights the need for larger, well-designed clinical trials to establish the safety and efficacy of hydrogen water for specific health conditions. Predominance of animal studies: The bulk of the research on hydrogen water has been conducted in animal models, particularly rodents. While animal studies can provide valuable insights into the potential mechanisms of action and physiological effects of hydrogen water, the translation of findings from animal studies to humans is not always straightforward due to differences in physiology, metabolism, and genetic factors between species. #research #science
Ive never heard of this. I really dont see why they continue to let snake oil be sold
Actually there was a snake oil that worked but that snake was from China not the US so when immigrants moved to the US none had a degree in snakes and would catch random snakes for oil
It’s like religion in a way except religion can actually be beneficial to some.
It's called Chinese water snake oil and it would relieve aches and pains this is due to high omega 3 fatty acids of the Chinese water snake

Some people just think that adding stuff to an already stable molecule is easy
nono, it is easy, it's called H3O+ and it's found in delicious drinks like sulfuric acid or to be fair, any acid
@@lucakun3455 I really like drinking sulfuric acid
@@lucakun3455this is hydronium the product of acids reacting with water. It's not dangerous in low amounts like in lemons and vinegar.
Although it's not the same as adding straight hydrogen because it's strongly bonded to water to make a new molocule with new properties.

@@Riot_Birdit took me way too long to get this. But I’m so glad I did 😂
Uhh…. No. Not really. Lol. Admittedly it IS overall stupid. But your idea here is kind of equally dumb…sorry.
H2O is water, H3O is hydronium. Hydronium is unstable and hypothetical. This is a load of bravo sierra
Hydronium is an intermediate that doesn't exist as an individual for more than a split second. However, instead of looking at H+ in acid reactions, it is seen as technically more accurate to use H(3)O(+) in the calculations. That being said, hydrogen gas is stable, so it's like one of the hardest ways to get more hydrogens in water. Basically, they just made the water slightly more acidic if they did anything at all.
Hypothetical? It literally exists in any water due to autoprotolysis, and its the thing pH value meadures
I think the idea is that they're trying to dissolve H2 into water. The problem is H2 is pretty light so it's not going to dissolve too well. It's not like carbon dioxide where it actually reacts with the water
@@dominiklehn2866 having a bottle of it is different than a proton jumping around
It's not hypothetical at all. It is the molocule that is measured to know the pH of an water solution. And it is a stable molocule, also meaning it has different properties than hyrogen gas that's an entirely different molocule.
I'm pretty sure that the "beneficial effects" those people are experiencing is because they are drinking actual water for once instead of way too much coffee or the newest trendy detox veggie pulp
Can't believe the only way we can get people to drink water is if we put it in a fancy LED bottle and tell them it'll make them immortal lmao
LMAO
Hydrogen ions In water? Bruh that’s literally just turning the water acidic. If you want hydrogen in your water, go suck some lemons or chug a soda. 😅
I think they're talking about dissolving H2 gas in water, which might be even more stupid.
@@matthiasvandenende8957 Agreed. H2 dissolved in water will still make the water more slightly more acidic. Also, H2 gas is not very soluble in water anyways. If you want hydrogen-infused water, go guzzle some vinegar.
@@RaymondGomez-bh6ij oh, I didn't know that. Thanks for the lesson
@@RaymondGomez-bh6ij dissolving H2 in water will not have any effect on the pH of the water, as the hydrogens in the hydrogen atom are covalently bonded together and won't dissociate into H+ ions. It's also not electrophilic enough to act as an electron pair acceptor and be a lewis acid.
Lol these scams hurt my brain
if it had actually worked, would that make "hydrogen water" h3o instead?
Not really, I mean it's posible you could make H3O+ but it would only be an intermediate, also hydronium is really not good for you in larger concentrations
TLDR: If it worked, they made the water more acidic.
So hydrogen gas is H(2), as in 2 hydrogen molecules. In water, hydrogens often get shuffled around. The H(2) breaks apart and the chemical reaction that INCLUDES H(3)O(+) gets tipped (the equilibrium gets shifted). This means that at any given moment, there WILL be more hydronium--H(3)O(+)--than before the hydrogen was added. Hydronium is very unstable and doesn't stay around as an individual, which is why for simplicity it is often referred to as H(+), which is where the H in pH comes from (measuring the extra H atoms)--more H+ in water means more acidic. So you wouldn't see hydronium floating around, it's more like that extra H in H(3)O(+) is running around and changing hands with all the other water molecules.
Let me know if you have any questions! I'm a biochemistry major senior. :)
@@IndigoBloopSo, assuming the extra hydrogen doesn't immediately dissipate upon opening (say, at 32f), you WOULD be getting extra hydrogen, but in order to stick to the water and remain at all, it would have to have a bond(not necessarily easily done), and that bond would result in a slightly more acidic water? Of course it would only be slightly more acidic, because so few hydrogen atoms would bond long enough to drink the water, instead leaving into the air.
Youd have to ionize it first somehow, but maybe

@@arandomsupra that does make sense.
Who comes up with these? The previous one I heard was chlorine water. "It's just a tiny amount to help your immune system." So basically, someone made good money selling tap water.
That’s crazy it’s selling well if true because there are also so many people who are distrustful of tap water because of those additives to keep the water clean (here in the US, anyway. Idk where you’re from)
Wouldn’t this be similar to simply making water slightly more acidic? If so, why not just drink water with a lemon wedge?
exactly
In the video he said water has some hydrogen already but that is stupid since it’s in a covalent compound which would most likely have a different effect than hydrogen on its own. Like Chlorine and NaCl for example. Anyway, lower pH would mean an increased concentration of H+, not somehow dissolved regular Hydrogen.
Ok,but how do you dissolve hydrogen in water to change the chemical composition of it? Is that even possible? Water already shifts hydrogens around to get OH-,H2O and H3O+. There are already plenty of free - floating H+ atoms in water too. How does adding more do anything? Are you breaking the H2 bond and adding more H+? Wouldn’t that just make the water more acidic? I can’t imagine how H4O+2 would even be possible, not to mention this molecule would be unstable. I guess my question is, what exactly are they doing to the water? And if it’s just adding more hydrogens, why would that change anything? Genuinely curious!
Heya! Biochem major here. You are totally right, the water just gets more acidic! It shifts the equilibrium towards having more H(3)O(+) at any given time. However, bc H(2) is so stable, it's definitely not a favorable reaction for the hydrogen to dissolve into the water, so not very much would happen. In order to get more to dissolve in the water, you'd have to add more energy to the system--think like increasing pressure, similar to how they use CO(2) to carbonate drinks through pressure.
Also it doesn't change anything, and it cracks me up bc not very long ago the fad was "alkaline water" which is literally the opposite of this
@@IndigoBloop Pffft that’s so silly. I feel like sometimes people make this stuff up to see how many people fall for it. Thank you for the insight!

Health claims from bogus companies massively outpacing the rate of research? Where have I heard this before?
If only the research had moved with "the speed of science" in this case, as it does when you need to quickly cash in on a new experimental drug that turns out to be unsafe and ineffective in the long run, it would have caught up by now.
Haha, I see what you did there. Cleverly hidden from the AI
When anyone starts with "well, I thought it was a scam at first too", you know it's still a scam, no matter what they say next.
Wouldn't adding hydrogen to water make it more acidic? Or is my understanding of redox chemistry completely wrong?!? Also, he's right, it's incredibly hard to dissolve gases into liquids, under normal conditions it's not spontaneous
Plot twist: water is made of hydrogen (they will be flabbergasted)
H2O. 2 Hydrogen atoms, 1 Oxygen atom.
I heard about this dihydrogen monoxide before, it can cause some nasty deaths
One thing to clarify, a gas being dissolved in a compound liquid is usually nothing like the gas being in the liquid’s molecule. For example, most fish breathe oxygen dissolved in water, but it would be quite a different bit of chemistry to try and remove the oxygen from the water molecule and breathe that.
Reminds me of the stupid "diet water" thing I remember seeing a while back. Trying to make water "healthier" like water isn't already healthy.
Depending on how warped you can get your placebo effect, yeah, it can ‘give’ you energy.

The only thing I can think is it has some acid dissolved on it so it forms those ions which are not great to you.
So adding hydrogen to water made it...wetter?? Im confused
Adding hydrogen to water does mostly nothing if just bubbled through like this. If it does dissolve, it would make the water more acidic! (The extra hydrogens in the water is where the H in pH comes from! Basically, more hydrogen = more acidic!) Let me know if you have any questions
@@IndigoBloop I mean that sounded a lot better then me calling water wetter lol! Thank for the clarification
I laughed so hard when I googled it and found out it was just water with hydrogen gas added.

Bruh I don’t want my water bottle to blow up when I accidentally have sparks near it💀
My dad has this machine he acquired that does the same thing (he also has one of these same cups that make the water as well, along with a bath bubbler if you could believe it) and I can hardly understand what in the world the hype about it is. He’ll either drink the water or inhale the hydrogen directly through a mask attached to the machine, but even with any potential health benefits I hardly see how they outweigh the insane amount of time one would spend sitting there doing nothing. The thing has a one hour cycle where you sit and breathe in the gas made by some little canisters of distilled water below it, and honestly speaking I think you could probably find a MUCH better use of that time.
Something about spending an hour pwr day inhaling pure hydrogen doesnt sound healtht

The Hydrogen that's already in the water stays in the water. The body doesn't separate H2O into H2 and O2 so having hydrogen dissolved into the water would be the only way to make it usable for our body, if it has a use for it.
It's a bit like with minerals. You can bite into a rock all you want, all you're gonna get is stomach problems but have some of the same minerals dissolved into water and suddenly the body can absorb them just fine.
The rest is correct as far as I'm aware tho

Saying that water already have hydrogen in it and therefore it has antioxidant feature is bullocks. Hydrogen in the water particle is bonded with oxygen and will not free up itself in human body. Even if it would do that, it would free up also an oxygen which causes oxidation. Oxidation and antioxidation effect would cancel out.
