    Interesting lesson. I totally agree about teaching concepts rather than memorizing a bunch of licks. Memorization of concepts is gold in guitar playing but memorized licks,. Motifs, songs dont teach concepts and is what plagues probably 75% of guitar players in the world is my guess because so many teachers teach wrong! Its likely because students just want to be able to play songs rather than soloing. Teaching concepts isnt as sexy as learning to play a song. Soloing is much more advanced and really requires an understanding of applied guitar theory.

    Coming from Metal to bluegrass, it’s less like learning a new language and more like learning a new dialect. Same language. Different inflection and note usage.
