A few of these guys are talking in annoying generalizations. I lived in West Hollywood at the time, I was/am gay and I didn’t center my universe on being gay, on doing drugs or getting laid. I had to work for living, get up, pay my rent, put food on the table etc. And I knew many who lived the same way. The men above in this video were the exception and not the norm.
Rock Hudson may have attempted to be "discreet" earlier in his career, but by the late 70s and into the early 80s, it was common for him to patronize the Melrose Baths & gay bars throughout WeHo and LA. He hooked up with Marc Christian (his final partner) at the Silver Fox in Long Beach after attending a performance by his friend Debbie Reynolds at the LB Terrace Theatre.
Notice they’re only talking about the men. I read that Patsy Kelly from early film days and she worked steadily with Judy Garland all the way up through the 60s with Doris Day and David Nevin and please don’t eat the daisies.
In my 20's I lived in West Hollywood. I had a full time job , paid for my own rent and lived alone with my two dogs. My lifestyle was a single gay guy. I frequented STUDIO ONE, THE BLUE PARROT, REVOLVER, RASCALS, THE MOTHER LODE, OSKOS, THE GREENERY .I knew Scott Forbes, Don and Jorge at Studio One. I had friends that worked at Ah Men's and even dated a couple of guys that modeled for them. Then in 1977 I met a guy from the Valley at a party on Hilldale and for 40 years we were together. He was an Executive VP at a major studio. He took me with him to every party and event he could including Premieres, screenings, and Aids fundraisers. I was lucky enough to meet and be in the presence of people like Elizabeth Taylor, Denzel Washington, Barbra Streisand and Jackie Nicholson. We were married in 2013 when it became legal. He passed away in 2017. My life in the late 70's as a gay guy has many fond memories, but I do remember in the late 60's it was quite different. Back then I had friends that owned gay restaurants like Don West and the CARRIAGE TRADE, Sumner Matteson/Nicky Nichols and THE GARDEN DISTRICT. Entrances to most bars were in the back alley/parking lit. I used to go to the MIDDLE EARTH on Santa Monica , OIL CAN HARRY'S and EVERYBODY'S in the Valley . No windows on the street side. It was still pretty hidden and so were we.
Lucky you! How was gay life during those times? Was it easy to find a twink? I'd like to have you as a friend and ask you soo many things about your life in Hollywood!!
My first time at Studio One was the summer of 1978. West Hollywood was heaven for me. The Blue Parrot, Rascals later the Mother Lode, 8709 bath house. Those were just a few of my favorites.
I question Wes Wheadon's recollection regarding Scott Forbes' naming of Studio One. While the club did have a prior history as a largely straight supper & dance club (infamously, RFK was scheduled to attend a victory party at its prior incarnation as "The Factory" after leaving the Ambassador Hotel on that fateful night in '68), I believe the Studio One dance club/disco created a few years later (early 70s) was specifically conceived as a primarily gay venue by Forbes . While a portion of the complex (Studio One Backlot) remained a live entertainment club catering to a mixed crowd for many subsequent years, I'm almost certain the club was never straight under the name "Studio One".
Nice insights. But commonly it is an issue when people try to bring the whole personal reference to attack the gay horridly. Bravery is the main thing, and just not everyone embrace it. Luckily things changed.
you probably dont give a shit but if you're bored like me atm you can watch all of the latest series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my girlfriend for the last months =)
Mr. Schwarz, I've seen "I Am Divine" and "Tab Hunter Confidential" and loved them so can't wait to see this one. Do you know if it will be on Hulu, Amazon Prime or Netflix?
sorry but you can't tell people what they should be attracted to. If that bar didn't want "fats" or "fems" in their club then there's nothing you can do about it. Maybe go find one that is or create your own.
Sounds like somebody needs to desperately prove his heterosexuality. @Kevin Farrel, literally nobody cares. Come on out of the closet, hon. No one's looking. *Edited for usage
This comment sounds like that guy in a gay bar on karaoke night grabbing the mic to say “I’m straight”. Everyone in the bar: “WtF was that????!” PS. Worse yet, he looks as gay as a bag of skittles.

That's why it's interesting to hear their stories. We're all living your life.
“No fats or fems” want invented for the apps? The phrase is that old? Wow ok I learned something today. Thank you!

People with short left index fingers date women and people with short right index fingers date men. Just look at the backs of your hands.

At 3:28 basically sums up gay culture of today
Such an interesting video! Love it. No fats or no fems sounds like grindr.

Wes Stern fell out of favor?
they all had house parties
03:20 - The Continental Baths was a gay bathhouse in the basement of The Ansonia Hotel in New York City, which was opened in 1968 by Steve Ostrow.

You're absolutely right, I remember when it was The Factory and then later Studio One.
Studio One Backlot had. Add some great acts. I saw Charles Pierce(sic?) Anita O’Day and Waylon Flowers and Madam. I probably misspelled the last one.
Earl Holliman has done a great job hiding being gay as well.
And at least 14 others.
Rock Hudson has left the chat
40 year old virgin brought me here
robert o. never admitted he was gay.he could have been a good force for the "GAY" community.
Give it a rest no one needs to bow to your dictate!
Really interesting.

@Vincenzo Mario Yea, I have been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself :)
@Vincenzo Mario definitely, been using instaflixxer for since december myself =)
Fascinating
Oscar de la Renta!?
Si
Interesting indeed.
George cukor?
John Schlesinger.
Sounds like this is what that character was based on in "Hollywood"...which was a fantastic series!
Poor old queen
Probably, good guess
@@PedroM851 Ok, that makes sense too

Thank you, Jeff. This title is currently available on iTunes, Amazon, RUclips, and Vimeo for rent or purchase.

Give me a woman any day!
And a gay man would say give me a man any day, in return. It isn't a choice to be gay or straight.
Sounds like somebody needs to desperately prove his heterosexuality.
