You're blaming freedom for the problems caused by authoritarian, big government. In the case of pubs the underlying cause of the problem is high taxes (government) and regulation (government) which limits competition for the likes of Heineken who own the politicians.
I used to go into The Britton’s Protection when ever I could. A truly beautiful pub, good beer, good atmosphere, homemade pies, enough whiskey to literally, make your head spin and non of that awful techno/pop music blaring out. I’m seeing this video two months after it was posted so I don’t know the outcome of what happened with Alan and the wankers from Heineken but I wish him the very best. Thanks for the upload, cheers 🍻
I use to drink here in the early 80’s, a great pint of (hand pump) Tetleys. Always have a pint before/after a concert at Bridgewater. This is a REAL pub that we need to keep as it is
The sounds on the video were so good it felt like I was standing in the pub with the glasses clinking it sounded like it was coming from behind me using spacial audio with the airpod pro 2! Never heard it like this before watching a RUclips video

The last time me and a friend went into this pub , the bar staff completely ignored us when trying to get served . I’d been going in for years , but I’ve never touched the place since . It’s no wonder it’s gone down the pan and facing closure .

I went recently - place was deserted and the beer selection was awful. If some faceless corporate giant wants to breathe a bit of life into the place I'm all for it. Otherwise let the National Trust snap it up and do guided tours
I dont see so much of an issue of modernisation IF it brings more customers and just the new buildings are modern but we absolutely MUST keep the pub as it is

Heinecken one of the worst capitalist beer and drinks manufacturers in the world. Anyone who follows the company's activities and machinations knows what kind of company it is. Apart from that, the beer is terribly bad. Hardly anyone drinks it here in Germany, at least here in Germany there is still a beer tradition and people drink real, pure beer. InBev Anheuser and Busch (Bud) also have no market for their water beer here in Germany. I don't understand how people drink stuff like that. everything hipster😄, mainstream shit!
supports the regional private breweries that still brew according to tradition and culture. Stay away from mainstream mass industrial beer 😬.

I could not agree more, I would not water the garden with Heinekan, and whilst Lager remains popular I do not see al ot of people in the UK thankfully drinking it. Our beer tradition is unique with cask conditioned ales of which the landlord was pulling one through as they walked into the pub. The traditional hand pull not really used anywhere else in the world and the draw is what actually pulls through the beer rather gas. I just wish more young people drank these local beers rather commercialized rubbish like Amstel and Guiness.

Shame a decent pub is going that way. There is a pub near where I live it’s been run as an independent for the last few years and is always busy at weekends with an excellent selection of beers including guest beers but’s now been taken over by Punch Taverns and I fear the worse.
What a fantastic pub,what a fantastic passionate landlord,what a fantastic video,what a bunch of muppets HKN must be. So many high rises gobbling up our history makes my blood boil. Thanks for bringing it to us Simon definitely needs a balance indeed and their isn’t any at the moment cheers 👍🍻

I can't see the pub being knocked down but i can see Heineken selling off the rights to light etc that encumber the development of the adjacent land that is subject to the 20-storey proposal mentioned. Perhaps some of the beer garden to the rear of the pub could be sold to said developer as well, which could bring in quite a lot. The tunnels beneath/surrounding the pub could also be a factor if they form part of the freehold. Just my thoughts without looking at it fully
I can also see the beer garden being used for the crane whilst the pub is shut and behind hoardings for a couple of years
