It's not illegal immigration that people are bothered about, its total immigration. I personally think if anyone can afford to pay their way then they should be allowed in. There is a larger problem of how wealthy countries amassed our wealth though, by exploiting and conquering less developed nations. It set the stage for what's happening now but people want to callously pull the drawbridge up. That is why aliens would give us a wide birth imo. We've been conditioned by a selfish competitive monetary system to act uncaringly. It's amazing there are as many people donating their time & money to help others as there is right now. That's human nature going against a system trying to make everyone selfish. We are after all a social species. For the longest time of modern human existence we didnt have money, trade, or barter.
I'm an immigrant, and I pay my own way for sure. I think anyone willing to integrate, learn the language and work for a living should be allowed. What shouldn't be allowed is immigrants wanting to create their own isolated society with their own laws and language. What chance are they going to have of generating a good income if they can't speak English? In the UK the religion is Christianity, the language is English. The British shouldn't have their culture eroded by immigrants who really believe the British should change to suit them. If the Union Flag, Christian religious icons or western art showing naked women offend them they're in the wrong country. It's as simple as that. A lot of countries wouldn't have railways, law, industry, engineering, architecture, radio and TV stations etc etc etc if it wasn't for the British Empire. Look at the state of them after we took the training wheels off and left them to it.

I've noticed some cultures here in UK are fine with it, like Chinese, but others with religious ties tend to be a bit less able to integrate. Problem beliefs everywhere unfortunately. Culture changes over time no matter what but like you say it's the suddenness of it that's causing more problems I reckon. The British did give the world some great stuff but it came at a cost. Some places went to hell but others didn't, which I think is amazing after being subjugated for so long. Some of them probably could have done a lot better by now without us interfering but the capitalist system loves exploitation. Maybe Rishi will get the votes of believers by planning to send all illegal immigrants to the UK to the underground bases on the Moon.
