    Fun fact: the reason salamanders are related to fire so much is because they lived in dead trees, the same trees that were used for firewood. When they threw it in, the poor salamander will run out of the fire

  • @dgchaos06

    This is a good recapitulation of how the show describes flame alchemy. However, a high oxygen density and a spark are not enough to sustain a flame - - you still need some combustible material to fuel the explosions. The creators of the show seem to believe that oxygen is flammable, which isn't true. But since this is a fantasy world, one could propose a mechanism for flame alchemy that goes beyond chemical reactions and into the realm of nuclear reactions (where you somehow create hydrogen by decomposing nitrogen/oxygen) or something totally magical. EDIT: grammar and punctuation

    • @SagesRain

      Debraj Ghose interesting. I honestly had no idea, good to know, though.

    • @firebolt100
      @firebolt100 6 лет назад +14

      I disagree with "oxygen not flammable". I don't remember many specifics of chemistry from high school or college, but I do remember learning that oxygen is flamable. I don't believe Roy's abilities are simply fueled by air (if we think realistically), but I know for sure that I can put out a candle out by screwing the lid back on to limit the oxygen.

    • @dgchaos06
      @dgchaos06 6 лет назад +51

      You need both oxygen and flammable material (material that gets oxidized) to sustain a flame. In your experiment, when you screw the lid back on, the flame goes out because there isn't enough oxygen to react with the flammable material -- the experiment tells you that oxygen is necessary for a flame, but says nothing about it being flammable. High concentrations of oxygen can make things (fuel) catch fire at lower temperatures or make existing flames brighter and hotter, but will not create fire without a fuel. I suspect you are either not remembering correctly or were taught wrong (oxygen being flammable is a common misconception, even among the well educated), which is totally fine. If you are still confused, feel free to leave a question here and I'll try to provide a better explanation.

    • @firebolt100
      @firebolt100 6 лет назад +1

      If its strictly one of those two options, then I must be remembering wrong.. It sounds like you're saying oxygen is a catalyst to every fire. Sounds weird to think of oxygen to fire as yeast to bread, but I'll take your word for it.

    • @dgchaos06
      @dgchaos06 6 лет назад +30

      Hmm, I would not call it a catalyst because a catalyst is something that speeds up the reaction, but does not get consumed in the process. Here, oxygen does get consumed, so it is a reactant and not a catalyst. A 'fuel' (same as flammable material) is defined as the thing in the reaction that loses electrons. Oxygen steals electrons from a chemical to produce another chemical along with flames, and is called an 'oxidizer'.
      Since you brought up bread, I can use that as an analogy for an extended explanation for interested readers. We all know that we need bread and peanut butter to make a peanut butter sandwich. This can be written as:
      bread + peanut butter = sandwich
      Both bread and peanut butter are getting consumed, but you would not call the bread the spread (even though they rhyme). The bread is your base, and the peanut butter is defined as the spread. A peanut butter sandwich is not possible if you don't have both the base and spread. You can then keep eating your peanut butter sandwich to get an energy boost to make more sandwiches -- this is a chain reaction. :)
      Likewise, in a chemical reaction, you define the 'fuel' (analogous to bread) as the thing that loses electrons and the 'oxidizer' (analogous to peanut butter) as the one that steals those electrons. By combining these two distinct components you then get a chemical product accompanied by a release of energy in the form of flames (the peanut butter sandwich).
      So, if oxygen (an oxidizer) is reacting with carbon (a fuel), you've got:
      carbon (bread) + oxygen (peanut butter) -> carbon dioxide and flames (sandwich)
      (you can have other oxidizers and fuels too, I am just using oxygen and carbon as one possible example)
      Under ideal conditions where you have enough oxygen and carbon, the flames can cause the reaction to occur over and over, leading to a sustained flame (similar to how the sandwich can give you more energy to make new peanut butter sandwiches). So really, oxygen is to carbon dioxide and flames what peanut butter is to a sandwich. :D

      Roy's Alchemy is explained RIDICULOUSLY in the anime.
      They say by adjusting the concentration of the oxygen in the air, with a spark as ignition, Roy can make flame!
      Take this: scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=954
      Q: At what percent oxygen does air become spontaneously combustible (25%? 30 %?) Or does it ever without an ignition source?
      A: ...Oxygen is also not flammable, but it is a high-energy gas that very readily oxidizes other materials. For something to burn, the reaction requires a fuel (the thing that burns) and an oxidizer like oxygen. Without the fuel, though, no combustion will take place no matter how high the concentration of oxygen is. Since air itself is not flammable, it is not a fuel and will not combust, spontaneously or otherwise.
      How the hell Roy creates that enormous flame without something to burn?

Though the part about control would still apply since you can't let it trail off like methane or you could blast something you didn't want to.

    Oxygen by itself cannot sustain a flame, he would need some sort of fuel to create the desired results. Two of the runes on Mustang's flame array are air and earth, so I'm guessing that means he draws carbon from the earth to act as sort of a wick and then condenses the oxygen levels around that wick to sustain the flame until it hits the target that has been saturated with pure oxygen... and Boom!

    • @GiveMeYourEyes947

      Roy probably could. If he's controlling the gases in the air then he could probably suffocate someone by depriving them of oxygen. But that'd still allow them time to fight back. Whereas setting them on fire would be incredibly painful and a much quicker, for lack of a better word, way to kill his opponent with minimal risk to himself. It's also shown, if I'm remembering correctly, that Roy doesn't need the spark from his glove to setting something on fire, just the transmutation circle, so he's still capable of fighting using other sources of ignition, like matches or a hippo lighter.

    While controlling Flame Alchemy is one thing, I highly doubt that recreating Flame Alchemy from scratch would be difficult at all. All you really need is a basic idea of how flames work. Hell, Scar uses a rudimentary version of Flame Alchemy while escaping from Father's lair, and he has pretty much no formal training in alchemy. The type of Flame Alchemy Roy uses is also very basic as well, as most people could probably draw it from memory, and intermediate alchemists could make it from scratch with enough theory crafting. I'm not sure about Berthold Hawkeye's form of Flame Alchemy, since we don't understand the full use or potential of Hawkeye's Flame Alchemy since it was destroyed as you said.

There’s always a certain amount of water vapour in the air, with more gathered around living organisms. I propose that Mustang splits water vapour into thin streams of hydrogen which he ignited with the spark, and uses the hydrogen in the water vapour to ignite things. He then creates an influx of oxygen so whatever is burnt combusts explosively. This explains how he was able to use fire to melt the ice and how he is able to send thin jets of fire to ignite his targets.

    Wierd cuz according to my knowledge, fire requires oxygen, and fuel where tf is the fuel

    If Roy is worth analysis, why haven't you wrapped your mind around the man called King Bradley from FMA??? He is one of the most epic characters ever!

    That’s so stupid. Why would she do that?

    Fun little factoid for you that not many people understand, (not even the writers) is that oxygen itself is not flammable. Roy can not create flame by manipulating oxygen concentrations. Oxygen does not burn, it is instead an oxydizer. (wouldn't you know it) this means it only *supports* combustion. Oxygen needs to bond with another flammable element to catalyze flames. Roy would have to transmute carbon or like element into the air to create the flames not just oxygen itself. Furthermore it'd have to be a thick dusty mist of carbon particles (WITH oxygen, of course) to ignite into the explosions you see.

      The 2 triangles facing down with the line on the lower corner in the fire alchemy symbols, are the symbols of earth in alchemy and the same symbol is used to represent the elements called carbo (coal, a combustible composed of carbon). The other 3 triangles in the symbols rapresents fire (the triangle in the center) and air (the 2 triangles facing up with the line in the corners). So the fire alchemy essentially manipulate oxygen, carbon and heat
