    Advice for those afraid of OS updates breaking Finale 27. If that happens, just run a Virtual Machine like Parallels and install Finale in that. You'll have a perpetual installation that will never go out of date. You'll always be able to open old files - print them to PDF or hard copy whenever you like.

    Today is my first day trying Dorico after decades of using Finale, and I'm very impressed. I already feel like it does many things better than Finale in terms of intuitive work flow, but I'm sure I'll run into some snags where I wish it did some things differently. Although, I also have used Cubase for years, so that might impact how Dorico feels to me. I'm just very glad to have that crossgrade discount.

    Thank you. Good news. I've purchased Dorico and am working my way through all of the tutorials. Glad to know that for now I will be able to continue to use Finale for current projects in process. Although, I am liking a lot of Dorico features. Just a bit concerned that there are a few things that my customers want that currently only Finale can do. Maybe future updates of Dorico will address these.

    I truly appreciate you preparing and sharing these videos. This will certainly help make this transition period less stressful, although the next few years will be filled with extra work. My suggestion is to begin some new SMALL projects in Dorico or MuseScore with the idea of learning the "ins and outs". I have a couple of large scale projects looming, and I will keep working on those in Finale, but otherwise, I will be using other software. Question: It is my understanding that Hal Leonard has purchased MuseScore and will be doing all of their in-house music on MuseScore. Will this have an impact on which software ultimately becomes the "standard"?

      I'm happy to be of service and glad you find these helpful! I'll look into the Hal Leonard situation! my initial thought is that the MuseScore app is essentially functioning as a highly sophisticated lead magnet to attract potential people to upsell other stuff, like scores, or courses... but I'll see what I can learn about this and get back to you!

    As a former happy Passport Designs user I migrated to Sonic Scores Overture 5 a couple years ago and found it so much easier to use than Finale had been. Now I would not even use MuseScore unless I had to. So glad to have exported my old work to MIDI and musXML!

    Mathew thank you so much for this video, I'm pursuing a Mmus, and I have to write contemporary music so this finale crisis is a big problem and an huge opportunity, I just installed Dorico and I have a lot of work to do with it. I will use finale meanwhile but as soon as I can get some knowledge about how to write on Sciarrino and Lachenmann styles i'll be changing to dorico. If you can add that to your content it would be great, I havent found anything about it yet. Thank you in advance

    • @mathewarrellin
      @mathewarrellin  12 дней назад

      what kinds of techniques from Sciarrino or Lachenmann are you trying to engrave?

    • @danilodawsonvideos
      @danilodawsonvideos 12 дней назад

      @@mathewarrellin Mathew! On Lachenmann: Symbols in boxes with texts, how to use arrows brom box to box, Seconds or minutes like 2'11'' as vertical lines instead of barlines and if theres any way to playback that. On Sciarrino: Dotted barlines with and without time signature, combining a lot of 16th or 32th in the same "beat" without the number on top of the figure, changing headnotes. And the dim. cresc. with the "o" at the begining or end.
      Also as I write a lot on hemiola I tend to write like 3/4+6/8 or time signatures like 2+3/4 ( 3+2 is default, idk how to change that). And for piano, I didnt find the "contemporary" line for pedal (it was so easy on finale). And also, if it is possible to know how to write partials on top of notes what would be awesome, I'm starting to write microtonal on 24EDO and I will be working on 32EDO soon.
      Thank you so much for this. By the way I've been studying your work, it is a really good work, thank you for sharing it. I think we will talk soon!

    Matthew, As a Windows user since the 80s, I have had close to zero problems with their OS updates and Finale. from a cybersecurity standpoint, its probably a terrible idea to not update your system... although hospitals etc. frequently leave their systems unupdated because they need 24/7 runtime, but this is exactly why they are far more vulnerable to attacks (e.g. during the whole wannacry thing)

    1:40 First, the term is 'software' which is already plural, not 'softwares'.
    Second, one does not usually trade in their older computer when they get new hardware, so why wouldn't Finale users be able to use their current PC's until the hardware dies?
    In other words, we could use Finale for up to 15 or 20 years possibly.
    Third, Finale including their latest version after purchasing Dorico is a slap in the face if you're only trying to trade up to the latest version of Finale.

    • @mathewarrellin
      @mathewarrellin  14 дней назад

      thanks for your comment! you're right about "software"--my bad! and it's true many people don't trade in their older computer. I'm thinking of the situations where a computer breaks, gets lost, is stolen... In my experience, I haven't had the luxury of maintaining multiple machines, so that just reflects my bias. For others, you're absolutely right, they could run Finale for a really long time! Hopefully Finale just releases the source code so it becomes open source
