  • Former Wallaby and renowned author Peter FitzSimons joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport, in what is no doubt one of the darkest moments in Australian rugby history.
The Wallabies are all but out of the Rugby World Cup after their 40-6 defeat to Wales, and to make matters worse, there are reports coach Eddie Jones has been in contact with Japanese rugby about a potential position. Peter and Martin discuss whether or not Eddie Jones should remain in the role, how shifty the coach's actions are, and more.

Most New Zealanders thought it was ridiculous shafting Rennie, who had organised a rabble into a team that even with massive injuries had beaten bokke, just lost to france and Ireland, and were a minute away from beating the all blacks if they had have kicked it out.

    • @catinthehat906
      @catinthehat906 Год назад +6

Rennie was doing well, a couple of close losses to big teams like France and Ireland made his stats look far worse then they actually were. The only reason they lost by a point to Italy was that Donaldson missed a conversion that an under 16 schoolboy regularly puts over. The sacking of Rennie by Hamish McLennan was devastating for the continuity and morale of the Wallabies rebuilding project.
McLennan is the real architect of this disaster.

Mate as an Aussie I agree with you. Dave Rennie was managing very well with a team that had injuries to multiple key players and they still almost beat France and Ireland last Autumn… I had very mixed feelings about EJ being brought in and now the chickens have come home to roost for RA… Mr Rennie is owed a big apology imho

@@activegas1014 What became clear to me watching the post match press conferences was that the Australian players had enormous respect for Rennie and he had formed a very robust team spirit within the Wallabies camp. Fitzy doesn't appear to realise the psychological impact of suddenly trashing that by sacking Rennie and bringing in Jones so close to the World Cup.

There is a real hypocrisy around the Wallabies WC failures. Truth is the current Wallabies just do not have the talent, skills, abilities or experience to compete at this level. In fact the Wallabies played to the “best of their abilities” against Wales and Fiji. They played EXACTLY as they had for the past 15-20 tests! Same relentless mistakes…. Missed tackles, poor passing, poor kicking, losing set pieces, poor scrum, hopeless at the breakdown, poor leadership! Eddie is. Of the sole problem. The ARU Board is the real problem for 20 years of relentless mismanagement. The rugby system is broken in Australia and will take a decade or generation to fix. In the mean time the NRL & AFL continue to poach the best young school boy rugby players across Australia. One Brisbanes top GPS schools has 10 of its best rugby players on NRL scholarships!

Campese has been warning of this impending disaster for years (and others). Eddie Jones aside, the ARU has been spending at the top end, instead of investing long term on grass roots rugby for years. Australia is stuck in the old private school club for years and now is a distant fourth in winter sports. They simply don’t have the players.

Ireland also has to contend with winter sports that are more popular than rugby (and a smaller population) and yet is the #1 team in the world. It isn't just investing in grassroots (which is correct) it is also what to do with these promising youth players. The elite pathways and structures supporting the national team isn't there. To add to this, the Australian teams at the u20 world championships usually perform very well (I remember the 2019 team with McReight, Wilson and Lolesio losing by 1 pt to a good French side in the final). Sacking Rennie and replacing him with Jones pre world cup was a terrible decision, one that should result in the entire RA executive being sacked

Is anyone considering the impact these results will have on Super Rugby as a going concern? Aussies are tuning out from union; despite real zeal for union, the NZ populace is small, and the islander audience even smaller... Not easy to get oneself to the top of the TV deal bun fights with those challenges.
It's going to be a fascinating next few years.
Here's a Nostradamus for you Super teams devolve into 'club level' teams, more teams in NZ and fewer in OZ, retain/grow islander team. Teams play a Heineken Cup equivalent with Japanese and South American conferences.
Flight of key players to other competitions is inevitable as the earning disparity will become too large to ignore...

As they kept on looking at statistics that meant FA and are partly to blame for peoples uproar against DR. Sport success has never been overnight. Eddie Jones is a a 'charlatan'.
John Connolly succeeded Jones when the outspoken rugby coach left his post as Wallabies coach in 2006, having guided the Aussies over a four-year spell.
Jones went on to coach the Japanese and English national teams before making a return to the Wallabies earlier this year, but after losing to South Africa and Argentina in his first two games in charge, Connolly fears the appointment is a backwards step.
'How did we end up with Eddie again? He is full of it. He talks a great game but plays a terrible one,' Connolly, who labelled the comeback a 'bloody disaster', told the Telegraph
'He is a charlatan, he is a failed selector. He was the captain's pick by the chairman who just came into the job.
When I took over from Eddie, the players were like beaten down sheepdogs. If you walked in a room they would have their heads down and were scared to do anything.
'There was no leadership. There was no development. It was a total void that took nearly a year to rebuild. I can't believe we have made the same mistake again.'
