The tree saga of 2024 part 2: A tree fell on the mainline!

- I was just about to go to bed and I hear what sounds like a gun shot and fireworks, followed by the telltale sounds of tree branches breaking. What followed was this quick investigation, posted right after I stopped the camera.

Now you need a shay to haul away the trees after they are cut up.
This is the kind of work my engines are made for.
The joy of owning a railway, hope there is less damage than you think !
There was a little waviness in the mainline this morning after we cut the trees off the track. I'll get a track gang on it to smooth it out.
Oh the joys of living with trees… A neighbor had just put in a fence and not a day later a tree came down and wiped out a section. At least you were anticipating gravity and put up the blocking!
Now that's a painful situation. At least I can bend the rails back into shape. Not so with a wooden fence.
Awwwww, man!, what a bummer! But.........storms affect railroads large and small, theres some really great videos out there of full size trains getting blasted by tornadoes head-on! (And the conductor says, "should we get away from the windows?")
A friend of mine just lost 40 feet of trestle to an old pine tree today.
@@MillBrookRailroad all that time-consuming work gone in an instant, but we humans cant control the weather, etc.🤔😤😢😵. I am sure he will have some buddies help him rebuild, and it should be better than before!
@@MillBrookRailroad Was that at Tony’s Shady Brook?
Wouldn't hurt to keep the pallet shield for the next big tree that falls
I think the cement blocks saved the track more than anything else.
So unfortunate this has happened. Guess it's part of having a railroad next to a forest.
That aside I'm looking forward to seeing the on going tree saga you now have and hopefully we will get to see the stages of you clearing and repairing any damage. Will be interesting viewing. Keep up the great work. 👍🙂
wow you definitely have your work cut out for you! that is a big tree! you will have a bunch
of rire wood in a seasion or two. you can use the flat cars to move the cuttings. I can not
wait for the “tree service removal” Aaron the arborist inc. good luck, be safe.
Life hands you fallen trees.., make firewood! Twill but warm thee twice. Happy to there was no serious damage, more importantly no was hurt!
It's definitely becoming firewood.
Call out the Big Hooks!
welllll on the whole "lemonaide out of lemons" mentality...know anyone with either a sawmill or one of those bolt on a chainsaw rigs that you can cut this into crossties??
I think we'll just season it for firewood in hopes that I can get a maple evaporator. This is beech and cherry. Good fire woods.
Possibly convert the Ossipee Central Mogul to be fired on wood??
I feel ya with the tree fall and the widow makers left hangin'... Fortunately for me, I don't have a railroad running through the yard. Hopefully, it doesn't cause you too many headaches
Even if the tree damaged the rail it is still better then if you were working on removing the rail when the tree decided to fall on both you and the rail! Stay safe while removing the rest of the tree.
I wasn't anxious to work under the tree. I was putting it off as long as possible.
Well apparently George has been though your place 😁👍
Are you referencing the guy swinging into trees or the kid with the hatchet? LOL!
@@MillBrookRailroadthe trees 🌴😁👍
Well. That's a problem.
I hope the damage isn't as bad as you think.
I'm sure it'll buff out.
You could make a circle of branches and create a nice little habitat for the local wildlife, and a nice ornamental piece in your garden. Especially when you decorate it with some perennials and some wild flowers. It sounds like such a waste to just burn it. That would create something interesting to watch down the track.
Hopefully, all that wood will help me boil down some maple syrup next year.
Oh wow!
So is the MILLBROOK RAILWAYS GETTÌNG A WOOD CHIPPER AND A SAWMILL AS A RAILWAYS SHIPPER😊😊😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
Oh crap! Call a reputable local arborist and have your other trees assessed. A quality arborist can also remove that mess without causing further damage.
Do you have an idea of the cost ? If your lucky you can find one almost for free. In exchange he keeps the wood....if it have some value ($$$) for him and is an easy job. In a ravine it´s an other story. I have about 10 mature dead ash trees to cut. Most are surround by other trees. One is a big almost 45 degrees "V" shape. Lots, lots of $$$
For that big V, a climber most go on top, cut some, go down climb on the second one, cut a bit go down, climb back on the first and so on, keeping trunks in equilibrium until it´s done with trees all around. It´s not a 500 $ job. Then i have to bring out all that logging.
Dead rotten trees, the bent ones, depending on tree species require attention and care. Some are not named
"Widow maker" for no reasons, barber chairs etc...some good ones on YT.
Having trees is fantastic until removal. We all should do branches trimming. Easy with a single shortie one. But a forest is an other story.
But i agree with you we all should, mainly along road, power line etc...
You should also prune them to have the wind go through. If not they can act like a sail.
If a tree fell in the woods would anyone hear it??? You DID!
Glad to have that tree down without injury. Will there be any useful timber for the cliffside logging division?
I'm not sure what useful timber can be had out of this.
Sad but not much summer railroad use. Giving you time for your "tie processing plant" to be operational. Luckily, tank car wasn´t sitting there. Mill Brook will be a logging line for a while. What happened ? Heavy rain, wind ? Tracks seems rather ok.
I had tried to cut the tree down a couple weeks ago, and it hung up in the tree next to it. So, we blocked up around the track where we thought the tree was most likely to fall.
That´s the worst scenario. A cut or broken tree stuck on others. Will fall yes, no, may be, when ?
Well....better on few aluminium rails than the house.
Now be safe yourself with chainsaw and load carrying. Take your time.❤
You need log disconnect cars now.
Three flat cars will have to do.
Was this from the thunderstorms that went through New England Friday (the 21st) night? We had some pretty intense storms with bursts of wind Friday night between 4-7pm.
Blocking and pallet's... I take it you were anticipating that this tree was coming down at some point?
This was a tree that I had tried to cut and pull down a couple weeks ago. It hung up in the tree next to it, so we blocked around the track.
This was about half past midnight on the 22nd, so it's really, really fresh footage.
