Another Bucketlist tool: The Snap On 16oz Claw Hammer. USA-Made. Red enamel coated. $75 price tag!

  • On my Bucketlist was the Snap On 16oz Claw Hammer. In specific, the USA-made, red enamel coated version. Not the silver China made one. With a $75 price tag , it is not something anyone really needs, but the brand imprinting on youth of the classic claw hammer also extends to the claw hammer design in general. For Snap On fans, this claw hammer is a destination in itself.

You made me think for a little bit. There is a connection with the hammers that I own, some are from my father‘s tools and some I’ve had for a very long time. Thank you for the good content!

I am convinced that Doc is legit _The Most Interesting Man In America._
Forget that "Dos Equis guy..." - Doc is the man.
What did he do in his former life? Plastic surgery for spies and evil villains? Mercenary medic for SEAL Team Six? Triage surgeon for Pablo Escobar and crew? We will probably never know...
But his collection of tools is second to none, and I can't decide if I'm proud or embarrassed to admit that I own four of the hammers he backgrounded here (my favorite probably being that little 12oz trim claw Estwing) - I bet you have another whole drawer full of specialty hammers, huh?
I could go on with compliments, questions and accolades, but I suddenly feel the need to go clean my watch...

This is most likely for military kitting purposes. A lot of government tool bids/contracts include a wide range of tools outside of the normal mechanic's wheelhouse. And with a lot of those contracts requiring some kind of USA made requirement Snap-on probably developed this hammer to be compliant (or edge out those not compliant). And if it is developed with inventory might as well offer it to the public.

This is just a rebranded Vaughan & Bushnell R16, I understand rebranding and contract production which is fine, and I understand the added cost of a special die to forge it with the Snapon name, but over 2x the cost is excessive.
The standards by snapon may be a little more picky, but the fit and finish here doesn't really look particularly special compared to the standard Vaughan.
It seems Snapon is really charging a major premium for their name here.
And The Chinese snap on hammer ? First of all why do they have any Chinese made steel hand tools , and why is their Chinese hammer almost 2x the cost of the standard Vaughan when it's less than half the hammer ?
I would go as far as saying no Chinese hammer is half as good as even a broken Vaughan.

      @@mugga5590
From as far back as the 1880's until 2012 Vaughan and Bushnell had a contract manufacturing hammers for Sears, they were the longest standing manufacturing contract Sears had as far as I know.
Starting most likely in the 50's ( I've seen nothing older ) Sears used an M stamp as an OEM code for Vaughan & Bushnell.
What's interesting is that Vaughan made all these special versions of hammers for Sears / Craftsman, from the hammertooth rip claw hammers which were a modification of the #99 and #999 to the standard hammers which had a fancier handle the steel collar added and the rubber end cap.
These definitely costed Vaughan more to produce yet Sears didn't charge significantly more and in fact they were the same price or less than a standard Vaughan hammer some times.
Snapon is not paying very much more to have these produced, this is just an example of them being greedy and ripping off their loyal customers.

@@TylerSnyder305 The Williams hammers look like they're made by Vaughan also which makes sense since they're a division of Snap-on. Tubalcain has a video where he goes to the Vaughan factory, he shows the fiberglass handle ones they make for Klein and what looks like the Craftsman dark wooden handle hammers. Vaughan makes excellent American made tools at decent prices, I like to see them get the recognition they deserve.

@@mugga5590 yep, Klein, Blue point, William's, many more.
They own Dasco pro btw, the punches have decent tips though overly soft bodies, the pry bars are great.
The older Vaughan bars were a little nicer but functional quality us equal.
They have their Grayvik line as well, if the finish of a head head turns out a little rough they just paint the entire head blue including the faces, and sell the hammer dirt cheap as a Grayvik.
Check out HJE the prices on Grayvik hammers even beat Chinese junk.

I probably have around 200 hammers. Only one is a claw. It came with my wife. One American framing hammer, a Vaughan, and several Picard Latthammers. The latter can be a lot of fun, especially considering just how much I dislike working with wood.

I disagree that "anyone can make a hammer". You may have heard the expression a "hammer shaped object" in reference to modern hammers that look cool but don't perform well. I have numerous vintage hammers that I'm always surprise by how well they drive nails. I really don't know what the difference is, but using the tool is proof to me.

Will not compare to a stiletto. Its just a hammer w snap on on it. Its probably not even as good as dewalt. When i got my dewalt i beam framing hammer everyone was talkin sh!t like why would you buy a dewalt hammer? Then when they used it they were like wow this actually is a really nice hammer. Its only 16 oz but strikes like a 28oz. Again everyone said it was a gimmich and BS, until they tried it and it really did strike way higher than its weight class. That snap on hammer is a waste. Now their automotive hammers are nice. Still a bit over priced, but they are nice and on the line of worth the money...for me anyways. But this claw hammer, waste of money for that price

Ran here to say this. Vaughan makes pretty much all the USA metal hammers that are not Estwing. Given the price of the titanium ones and the other random stuff I have collected (anyone ever see a leather handle Estwing roofing hammer … that’s only sold in Europe), $75 seems downright reasonable.

    • @TylerSnyder305
      @TylerSnyder305 2 года назад +2

This absolutely a rebranded Vaughan & Bushnell R16.
I only do hickory handles so I'm not buying the R16 let alone this version, but if a collector wants this why not I guess.
Snapon is charging double the price just for their name though and I'd say that's even after the extra expense of the special die needed to forge their name into it instead of Vaughan.
