Hi from Seattle's cold, wet yuck! 😅 I've had great luck with tomato variety 'Early Girl.' I'm excited to try 'New Girl' this coming season. Apparently, 'New girl' is an improved variant of 'Early Girl'.

Ooooo..... long red thin cayenne did great for me here in the Pacific Northwest at Seattle, but they did not get enough warm days to ripen on the plants. I had to harvest them all while still green. We barely had any nights that stayed above 60F this past summer!!

I always feel like a kid in a candy store. I think you do too 😅. We all get drawn in by the descriptions. The Dolgo crab is a great variety. Apples that are big enough to do something with, jelly and apple butter.
Racoons eat my corn. I don't plant it anymore. You need to plant corn in big patches for wind pollination. I'm going to try planting my tomatoes, Celebrity, randomly through out my garden. They won't be close at all. Good luck with Sub Artic. I'm not trying anything new this year except a sweet pea flower. No January thaw, fingers crossed for one in February. Been skating yet?

It's true. I'm drawn to those seed display units even though I absolutely don't need any more seeds this year! I've never heard of a Dolgo crabapple but I'll look for it. Nice to be able to use the apples, too.
I was spoiled with the corn in the old garden but I've struggled since moving them. But the lure of fresh sweet corn on a summer's day it's too great. LOL. I've heard of Celebrity tomatoes, but have never tried them. Are they a hybrid? We're planning on skating Saturday! I'll try and film some of it. :)

My own garden is just a strip about 10 x 30 at the side of the house. A good sunny spot. Over the 50 years we have been here, I have planted different veggies, but always tomatoes. Now I am 92 years old, (vintage), and as I aged, I cut back on what went in. So those tomatoes, yellow and green beans, beets and carrots and green onions always make the cut. Now the soil needs to be ‘renewed’ and we do have two compost bins, but I am afraid it will be beyond our abilities to do it. And the tomatoes in the last two years did not do well(any surprise there?). So this may be our swan song year. So sad. I can get my garden pleasures watching you.

Gardening can certainly be a very physically demanding activity. How amazing that you've gardened for so long! I bet you have some great tips and tricks you've learned over the years. In our last house in town, I have a tiny 4x8 garden bed and it was amazing what I crammed in there!

But what a beautiful song you have written with every seed planted, weed pulled and vegetable harvested 🎶 🎶 Well done! Perhaps there's more to compose!

In USDA Zone 5B, I grew the Blue Picotee morning glory several years ago and the flowers seeded the area more than generously. I didn't know that they were a hybrid until the next year when they reverted to common blue flowers, wildly spreading. The Alpine strawberries failed, sadly, but I might try again by first germinating them on a moist paper napkin in a zipper bag.

How funny we both picked two types of seeds the same! Good to know about the morning glories. I guess no saving seeds there! I have to read the instructions for the Alpine strawberries. I hope they grow...I'd love to taste them!

I have lupin seeds as well, but I've never tried to grow them. I think I read somewhere that they are poisonous to animals? And maybe that's why I shy away from growing them. Have you grown strawberries from seeds before? I'd appreciate any tips!

Never tried strawberries before. Going to try in laundry basket will let you known
Lupin are perennials they auto seed only thing when they are grown cannot transplant them. Yes they are poisonous but a lot flowers are like lilies and so on.
No problem touching just can't eat them

😢i have shared this video with two daughters who are avid gardeners and enjoy an experiment. One lives in Ottawa. The other near Regina, two totally different growing environments.

One of my daughters lived in Ottawa for a few years and yes, that is totally different from us here, even though it's still Ontario. So much colder and so much more snow! What zone is Regina? I'm guessing 3? That would be a real challenge to garden there!

Re: starting corn ahead. I have done it succesfully - its likely a viable solution for your pest problem. I found the starts were not overly fond of transplanting, and in side by side comparison, they took as long to recover as the traditionally planted seeds took to germinate and catch up, so for me it was a wash. I haven't started any indoors after i switched to raised bed for the corn (my attempt to get the ground warmer faster), but I keep the technique in my back pocket just in case we have a super slow spring.

Oh thanks for this! I am so glad to know you have tried starting corn and how it went. Yes, I have the same issue with my luffas...the ones I transplant often take a while to get over the shock and if I happen to plant some from seeds, they catch up. But in this case, the started corn might be the only corn I get if the seeds get eaten! I'll make sure I film it and see how it goes. So good to hear from you. :)
