    We have a red tractor audit on Monday. It will be interesting to see how many problems we have.
    Great video as usual. Lots of interesting information.

    Always enjoyable to see your updates Andrew - and thank you very much for the little feature on Nala and Frankie. They're a couple of lovely characters and must be treasured family members. Looks like I wasn't the only one to suffer the impacts of a miserable July😂

      The extra yield gained compared to if we’d dd’d will more than compensate, we’ve proved that in our 8 year dd trial in the same field.

  • @SpudSlingsby
    @SpudSlingsby 10 месяцев назад

    Beet yields look respectable considering the late start it had, bet you're glad its up off the heavy land given the current rain! Just a shame the sugar isn't higher. We're busy lifting spuds so haven't started beet yet. Cleaner upgrade on the horizon? We have a CTM 544 with the same rollers, a carry over from our days as a haulier, it replaced a Todd just like yours. Beans after grass works well, followed by wheat.

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  10 месяцев назад

      Beet yields are the lowest we’ve had for a number of years but not drilled until May 5th and lifted before end of Sept, I have to be pleased. At least it’s all in the factory and drilled with wheat 2 weeks ago. I think with our haulier having a ctm cleaner, it’s not viable for us to swap ours.

    Great stuff Sir.😊
    I thought you could not do a monocrop and get area payments, so that is why it is unusual to do continuous Wheat. ???

  • @timcowen2601
    @timcowen2601 10 месяцев назад

    Could leatherjackets (crane fly larvae) potentially be the issue of why the wheat yield is poor after grass? FWIW our highest yielding w wheat field this year in Cumbria at 11.1t/ha was after a 10yr grass sward which was knackered.

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  10 месяцев назад

      We put a seed dressing on for those. I’ve spoken to a number of agronomists and they all say wheat after grass is not a success. As for best yields, ours came off continuous wheat, 11 ton/ha too.

      @@WardysWaffleAndrewWard spot on, better luck with the barley. Got our dairy + beef and sheep RT inspection this morning. Since the last one 18 months ago there’s a lot more RT seems to want to stick its nose into. For example HSE, nutrient plans, soil tests, slurry storage which have absolutely nothing to do with RT

    Would turnips be a good thing to follow the grass, graze them off then spring barley, i know you said about compaction from grazing, but the rent from the turnips and the manure value would far offset a run over to lift the soil guess it all depends when the grass becomes available,

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  10 месяцев назад +1

      That’s the trouble, the field gets handed to us too late for turnips and we only have one crop and then it’s back to the tenant for 3 years of grass.

    Does the plot drill get a wash before use or is the weed seed import risk with soil minutely irrelevant ?

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  10 месяцев назад

      Yes, very different, I’ve been a few times so know what you mean! Sugar beet relies on sun to build sugar, which is out of our control but Buikding a big canopy to attract the sun is up to us so plenty of nutrition and try to plant early.

      It the cost of growing any winter wheat and the yields we get which make it uneconomic.

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  10 месяцев назад

      😂😂😂
      We’ve still got 300+ acres of wheat to drill but it’s important it’s not mauled in. We’ll be patient and if a drilling window doesn’t appear, we’ll put it in with spring crops, we’ve done it many times other years.

    Hi Andrew ,why don't you grow winter barley?

    • @roblonsdale8927
      @roblonsdale8927 10 месяцев назад

      Barley is'nt as profitable as wheat, lower yielding and less value per tonne

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  10 месяцев назад +1

      It has to be planted early to do any good but that’s not good for controlling blackgrass. Also, spring barley is cheaper to grow and yields as much and spring barley has a very short ‘spend to income’ window.

    • @johnmullaney3445
      @johnmullaney3445 10 месяцев назад

    What seed rate you drill your wheat at

    • @WardysWaffleAndrewWard
      @WardysWaffleAndrewWard  10 месяцев назад +1

      Varies. We started last week at 350 seeds / sq m but went up 50 seeds on rough areas and more on the rough beet headland. if we were drilling now we'd be 420 seeds / sq m in good conditions.
