You done rings wrong 🙁 Gasses that escape the top ring (looser in this case) do not make it past the 2nd ring due to it being tighter, and are forced back to the top compression ring (pushing from underside), causing it to lose its sealing effectiveness. Every piston manufacturer and their mother recommends a 1-2 thou (or a certain %) larger 2nd compression ring gap. Sometimes this effect called is Ring Flutter. I hope this help 👍
@@VdubInParadise factory specs are good but for factory spec engine with factory spec boost and turbo. I done a lot of all types of engines and this is quite important if you planning go big boost without problems 👍
I recently built my mk4 1.8T VW GLI Running a Garrett GT3071R. I see comments about ring Gap. I honestly wouldn't go with the Bentley Manual specs. Being that is for stock motor and stock turbo setup. I went with JE Pistons and IE rods. JE has their own specs based on numerous factors about ring gap. Mine is 16 top ring and 20 second ring. giving it only 1thousands of an inch difference is not nearly enough. From personal experience my set runs great, no excess crankcase build up. All cylinders tested at 155psi.
Could have used some royal purple towards the end of its running prior to disassembly. Loving my AWD 04' 1.8t passat wagon 5 speed. Has all Interior unlike some I've seen on y.t. only thing broken is the ash tray swivel. LoL
Thanks a billion for the dl. I need to pin the ecu harness for my TT. My sons TT on my channel is 562awhp. I'm playing catch up. I'm getting his ie rifle drilled since he is shooting higher and doing Tuscan rods with arp new age bolts.
Integrated Engineering states on their website that they recommend the bearing tangs face the exhaust side of the engine. Backward from what you've done. 8:37
I've heard ecs tuning takes long to ship, although when I ordered from them it was only a week. I prefer FCP euro, they're only a state away from me so shipping is fast.
Thts the crazy part of shipping sometime imagine being in Canada and adding import charge on top of that bunch of bulshit anyways great job & nice video iam currently working on a mk4 gti i wanna convert it to awd r32
Lol I have been waiting a year more for my wheels to come in from ecs. They were supposed to be here feb 1 never showed up then March 6 then March 21 and still nothing and they have no idea where they are awesome
This might be a stretch but I need some help. I have a 99 gti 1.8t. It was wrecked and now has a N/A 2.0. It runs like dog shit and needs tore down and rebuil or at least looked at it's about 14k miles shy of hitting 200k. Can I get some recommendations on where to find quality parts. And some common issues to look out for. Thanks in advance.
Head studs and main cap stud conversion was part of the build..but after the recent shipping costs we had to cut down to brand new OEM head and main cap bolts.
ECS tuning sent me a knockoff coil for my 1.8t a4. Ordered Hamburg Technic and received some crap with no branding on it. Looks nothing like what they advertise. The one they sent can't even be bolted down. Sits 2-3mm to high and won't go down any more.
@@VdubInParadise i guess it depends on the ring material used, i forget how it goes, i just see it as scratching up a smooth sealing surface while increasing the bore diameter and the time the rings break in or smooth back out the cylinder youll have more piston/bore clearance and larger ring end gaps

Peter PTR I’ll look into that. Haven’t heard much about ring flutter. I just stuck to the factory repair specs but that is some interesting info.

I did this build years ago with the same turbo on my 337 it has been perfect no issues

Thank you for putting such a great guide on RUclips for us guys ! I hope I’ll be needing this reference soon 😂😍🔥

Hi, can you make a connecting rods review video for us? Compare with your Integrated Engineering H-Beam Connecting Rods.
Thanks for the Bentley PDF

Great vid!
Good video bro!!
This will be one sick engine! :D
Real infotainment-- thanks
Hello!! The piston from BAM engine code ? what's good piston ? Mant Thanks !!!
How much did you pay for machine work on your engine if you can remember?
Aloha I was wondering if you know a machine shop in Hawaii that will work on my 1.8T head . Mahalo Jimi

Why you don't change for forged pistons? How much whp you expect?
talokoeim The stock pistons for the 1.8t are forged. Looking to get around 350 whp.
@@VdubInParadise Do you know how much whp the OEM pistons endure?
talokoeim at least 450 whp
@@VdubInParadise In Brazil, we put pistons forged, because some peoples say 400cv is the limit.
Very nice videos.
People run over 500 on stock pistons all the time

Loving the series. Im away to shave and paint the engine bay then onto engine internals and BT. Did you clock your rings, ie 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock?
Haven’t clocked them just yet..plan is to do them when we put the crank in.

With a great engine and big turbo soon, how many hp is you're goal?🤔 btw great video🔥💪🏼
With this build, around 350 whp.
Damn well you are going to have a really good time😂 wish you the best vdub gang🇧🇪🔥🤙🏼
can i use everything of a vw passat 1.8t motor to turbo my golf gli 1500 or do i gotta engine swap
Vdub gang 🤙
Why not use the newer G25-550?
My dude where do you find these manuals ?
Found them floating around the web. 👍
What was the price on the rods?
MJ Booysen $449.
What are those rods rated for ??
Gustavo Villegas IE mentions up to 700 hp.
@@VdubInParadise fasho I need to swap mine too

0.15 and 0.16mm??? Is not that to tight? Im doing 0.18 top and 0.20 second, oil min 0.15 an that is in inches
In Part 2 of the series, I changed the gap to 0.016 and 0.018 inches.
VDub In Paradise Nice bro I realised that when I whatched the 2nd vídeo! Keep going!
I dont think there is a need to hone the cylinders if they havent been bored out..
Maybe..I just like the idea that a fresh hone and new rings will wear out the same time and seat properly.
