    For all of the problems with this movie, I adore two things. One, the ape makeup is some of the most realistic and stylized I've ever seen in a feature film, and two, the costumes are very intricate and detailed. Both together make some talented practical effects.

    • @ultimamage3
      @ultimamage3 3 месяца назад +46

      The ape makeup is simply top-tier. Yeah, CGI and motion capture for apes in the modern trilogy is impressive and all, but the practical effects here really does stand the test of time.

      The ape makeup is not only the best ever in a Planet of the Apes movie, it’s the best I’ve ever seen in any movie. This alone made me come back to this film, and over time I’ve come to like it. It’s only really let down by Marky Mark and the other bland human characters. All of the apes are amazing in my opinion, especially Tim Roth who should have won an Oscar.

    • @nicksorenson940
      @nicksorenson940 18 дней назад

      @@ultimamage3 I can get them going for the CGI mo-cap early on in the reboot films with Rise, where they wanted to show how they started out as regular apes that had their intelligence increased through a drug, but I still have my expectations that these newer apes are going to have to evolve into being a lot closer to the ones in this film at some point. Because this depiction of the apes along with the original film series are still what I immediately think of when I think "Planet of the Apes".

    The twist of the original movie was not in the original novel. Instead, the main character flew back to earth, only to discover that the monkeys had taken over earth too. So technically this twist is pretty accurate to the novel.

      When I first watched it, I thought something had happened in the further past that led to a whole new timeline of Apes Taking Over Planet. I guess I was too beholden to the “Apreham Lincoln” twist I thought that it MUST mean the real Lincoln never happened, instead of “merely” the Apes replacing the memorial with one of their own heroes. 😅❤

    I actually rather like this movie. The ape society was interesting, alien yet familiar, and overall the film hews closer to the satire of the original novel. It's not my favorite Planet of the Apes movie, and the reboot prequels absolutely blow it away, but it's an enjoyable enough movie.

    We have to appreciate how the visual design of this movie is TOP TIER for visual callbacks from the origin of the apes vs humans situation
    The apes' helmets look like the pod's rear end, the humans' branding iron is a representation of the Oberon's silouette among others.

    Fun Fact:
    Danny Elfman and Rick Baker, who
    did the music and the ape makeup
    respectively in *"POTA 2001"* were
    originally hired to do the same jobs in
    *"Return to The Planet of The Apes",*
    a planned but cancelled 1988 film by Adam Rifkin, which was to be a direct sequel to the original 1968 film and ignoring the sequels from 1970-1973.

    I was a huge cinephile before this movie came out. Was a little kid watching the 1970’s Planet of the Apes movies on TV. 1999 was THE year for movies. This movie tanked with viewers who did not appreciate Burton’s vision. He made a good movie with great actors and a spectacular FX team. There is no reason for this movie to have tanked. It is all the camp and respect to the 70’s makeup effects, which were awesome for the time. This is a very good movie. And one of the last to be shot with so many physical effects.

      @jamesatkinsonja 3 месяца назад +3

      But what works on paper doesn't always work in practice. Tim Roth said he couldn't explain the meaning of the ending, nor the logic of it for example. As Burton had no interest in doing a sequel, it seems to have been there more for 'a starting point' if someone else took it over.

    Also I don't think the the world seen at the end is ours conquered by the Thade we just saw, somehow getting to Earth and getting there before Wahlberg's character. I think it's an alternate realty, a parallel universe.

    • @drago939393
      @drago939393 3 месяца назад +4

      Although I instinctively agree, if we go by the "reverse order" thing, it's possible that Thade arrived earlier even if he left much later... But that is certainly all fanciful speculation for a likely nonsensical twist ending.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 3 месяца назад +3

      It really is a WTF twist but... if the Oberon is the 'genesis' of the population, many years/generations must have past before Leo arrived. Hence, when Thade followed him, many generations also past on earth before Leo arrives there.

    The one thing I would admit I would love to see after seeing how great the ape make-up FX, is how would Andy Serkis would look like as Caesar but with practical make-up and with the war paint of "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". That would look wicked cool.

    Is this movie good? No. Is it so bad and over-the-top that I watched the whole thing through in utter disbelief? Yes, and honestly, that's about as good. As Roger Ebert said...
    "I ask two things of a movie: that it be good, and that it not bore me. This movie (Barb Wire) wasn't good, but wasn't bored."

    Firstly, I straight up LOVE this movie, and honestly don't understand what people didn't like about it? Maybe there's some problems that I just didn't see, but I'm gonna ignore them and continue loving this. Love this video too.
    Secondly, I can't wait for you to cover the others as Kingdoms comes out, I love them as well and actually lost track of Kingdom's production a couple years ago and didn't realize they finally made it. I was in the theater to watch Godzilla Minus One when the first trailer hit and they showed the ape and I kinda freaked out when I realized that was what the trailer was for.
    Thirdly, I would really like to see a video on the old Bill Murray Garfield movie, as the new one is coming up as well. I grew up with it and recently went back for a research with a more critical eye, and I think it still holds up (It's definitely influenced my thinking to where no one else but Bill Murray or a very similar voice can believably be Garfield for me). Maybe even Tail of Two Kitties? But while I still enjoy that one, I do have to admit it is kind of weak.

    Your time chronology makes sense, however it doesn't account for how Pericles was able to be the messianic figure of the Ape culture, unless I'm remembering it wrong and Semos was just a generic Ape god that the Apes mistook Pericles for when he landed. If that's the case, then who was Semos?
    What part about the Oberon going through the time portal made the Apes rebel, and which one among them was Semos? How did they suddenly learn to talk? Maybe I need to rewatch this movie.

    Never did understand all the hate for this movie, and my first experience with the franchise was the original run when I was growing up in the 80s and they had weekend sci-fi features on tv. (Beneath was pretty out there, not gonna lie haha)
    It hit all the right beats for a PotA installment and the subversive callbacks were 'Leo pointing at the screen' memeworthy before the meme was a twinkle in its creator's eye. They were done with a knowing wink, but also in a way that showed love for the original movies. Even the ending, we knew there was going to be a twist, it's in the DNA of the series, but actually seeing it for the first time and how it played out was incredibly fun in the theater, the whole 'wow~ they actually went there...' experience.
    $68 million in its opening weekend, the second highest EVER at the time, and $362 million against a $100 million budget shows it at least managed to generate some good attention too, not to mention a few award nominations at the BAFTAs for the incredible costume work and the ever-spectacular Elfman's score at the Grammys.

    Ironically, famous film critic Roger Ebert actually liked the Twilight Zone-esque twist, he mostly complained the story was badly structured and tonally all over the place:
    "It's an action picture and a satire of an action picture. It's a comedy and then it gets serious. It's a social satire and then backs away from pushing that angle too far. It even has a weird intra-species romantic triangle in it. And it has a surprise ending that I loved, even though Matt Drudge spoiled it last weekend with a breathless "scoop." The movie could have been more. It could have been a parable of men and animals, as daring as "Animal Farm." It could have dealt in social commentary with a sting, and satire that hurt. It could have supported, or attacked, the animal rights movement. It could have dealt with the intriguing question of whether a man and a gorilla having sex is open-mindedness, or bestiality (and, if bestiality, in both directions?). It could have, but it doesn't. It's a cautious movie, earning every letter and numeral of its PG-13 rating. Intellectually, it's science fiction for junior high school boys. [...] Burton's work can show a wild and crazed imagination, but here he seems reined in. He's made a film that's respectful to the original, and respectable in itself, but that's not enough. Ten years from now, it will be the 1968 version that people are still renting."
    Which is sad, there's a lot that's commendable about this film. Might be on the lower end compared to the 2010s trilogy and the OG film, but there's still a lot here that can be enjoyed by people, of which I am likely one. Besides, it at least allowed Planet of the Apes to remain relevant after over two decades of hiatus from the franchise. If this film didn't happen, maybe we wouldn't have ever gotten Caesar's story.

    I remember seeing this in the theatre as a kid and loving it while I was watching it, then discussing it with my Mom on the car ride home and realizing it didn't make much sense and I actually didn't like it at all by the time we got there. I didn't have the words for it at the time, but I now cite this movie as my first experience with "critical analysis". And that was when my childhood ended...😅
