Love that the screaming at 10:37 is every soldier showing they are not infected. It’s both a show of strength and practical.
Good point! very perceptive!
Yes very good point
Didn't catch that! I always just thought it was also a sign of humans being the more animalistic kind at this point because of war.
21:11 I’d just like to point out that in ASL, the way to sign someone’s name is the first letter of their name and a special gesture to describe them. In the first two movies, the other apes were shown to refer to Caesar by signing a C over their foreheads, because of his intelligence, but in this scene, Maurice signs a C over his heart instead ❤️
Thank you for pointing this out, I'd have never caught it.
That is such a great detail, both in its significance to the plot, as well as what it means to the level of research/dedication they writers/crew put into this series. Thank you for sharing
I seem to have a little something in my eye...
Come on man, why you gotta do this to me
That’s really cool to know.
Something that really blew me away was how much Caesar's speech improved from Dawn to War. He talks like a full human.
4:24 As a general rule of thumb, horses can carry a rider that is about 20% of their weight. So if Luca and the other gorillas weigh 350lbs, they'd need horses that weigh about 1750lbs. Luckily there is a breed that more than meets this requirement: the Shire Horse, which can weigh anywhere from 1870lbs to 2430lbs
I did not expect to learn horse facts today, let alone here, but here we are. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing
Planet of the Horses
@@kayleighlehrman9566 as we all know, patriarchy is where men and horses rule the world, so clearly this movie takes place in a primatriarchy, where apes and horses rule the world
Cool. Thanks for the info
Maurice will forever be my favourite supporting Ape character throughout this trilogy
Yes! also he is the whole catalyst for Ceasar exposing other apes to the virus in Rise with his one comment "apes stupid", gotta love maurice
I've always kinda wondered whether a lot of the appeal Maurice holds is due to the character being a big, strong, clever dude, who is portrayed by a little old grandmotherly black lady?
The warmth, the gentleness definitely comes through in the movies.
How much is due to the animators, how much is due to the mocap performance? Hard to say for sure.
A pretty incredible achievement for all involved.
Him and rocket my favourites

If you're interested, Karin Konoval wrote a piece on Jane Goodall's website describing how she prepared for the role.
This channel is WAY better than CinemaSins. I'd much rather find out reasons why a movie is so loved, than find all the negative things about it. Sometimes, positivity is not a bad thing.
@Tygermite Yes and you’re so correct 100% they are better than cinemasins because unlike those biased bastards and idiots, these geniuses here know how to review a film that is good (Due to them being well-received with positive reception and have high ratings that they deserved) much like other youtubers and film reviewers out there such as Chris Stuckmann, Saberspark and Bobsheaux are doing.
Okay leftie
I agree. I know it’s not cool to like anything but I don’t care.
@@Its_Me_Romano stupid political statement, name-calling, assumptions
Three Dings for you, you seem to like them so much
Well the thing is that CinemaSins was a channel that legitimately found flaws and pointed it out in a humorous fashion then make a friendly joke about what should happen like the HISHE channel.
What it dissolved into is pandering to people who troll to troll sake and not check their distasteful comments in the fane base, hence the rise in popularity of other channels the directly challenge them or does the parallel opposite.
What you have then is a childish (wait they have better manners) trollish base that basically runs around terrorizing other channels for simply not agreeing with them
In the DVD commentary for War for the Planet of the Apes, co-Writer and Director Matt Reeves revealed that the filming of Caesar's final scene where he says goodbye to Maurice before he dies was extremely emotional for everybody involved. During filming, "pretty much everyone on the set" was weeping openly at the deeply touching acting of Andy Serkis and Karin Konoval. Serkis' mother & Reeves' father had both died during shooting.
14:42 these two moments really are incredibly deep, in that moment Nova restored Ceaser's faith in humanity and then his fellow apes restored his faith in himself, he always thought they would naturally follow the strong and couldn't show weakness, but even at his lowest, they still follow him, it's a beautiful way of showing just how far they have really come.
Caesar died in the exact same way as Moses, leading his people to the Promised Land, but dying before he could join them.
That's a nice comparison.
It was very much intentional. And could be a nod to Charlton Heston’s role as Moses in Ten Commandments.
It’s really not that uncommon (or original) to paint parallels to biblical stories. They hit hard in most western societies because most people think those stories are true.
Sick Bible reference bro.
Moses did die before they reached the promised land actually.
Also my favourite detail in this is when donkey talks, the other soldiers look at him like "Um I didn't know you could talk wtf?"
Easy to miss if you weren't paying enough attention
Everyone needs a homie like Maurice!
And rocket, don't forget that Chad of an ape
Maurice is ride or die, man.
Maurice is incorruptible.
@@matro2He is sure was. Besides, orangutans (People of the forest in Malay) as one of the great apes (hominids) in the animal world certainly are such amazing tree dwellers of Asia’s Borneo, Sumatra, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Maurice is the best, such a good right hand man for Ceasar, unlike koba maurice still saw the good in humans and showed empathy when needed. probably my favorite character of the franchise
An indirect reference to Malcolm and his family from Dawn was cut from the conversation between Caesar and the Colonel at Caesar's cage. According to the film's director Matt Reeves: *Malcolm was killed by the Colonel, trying to persuade him that Caesar and the apes could be trusted.*
His fate is most unfortunate 😔
I remember reading about that, too. Honestly such a heartbreaking ending for the character, especially after reading the comics -- he was one of my favourite characters in the new franchise.
oh damn I would've preferred that they just left the colony and did their own military antics without involving them
Having Koba personify Caesar’s guilt by haunting him was my favorite part of the movie
3:01 I totally missed this on my watch, but I think the reason that winter wants the apes to leave so badly is because he had already told donkey where they were hiding. He is regretful and wants to save them from the coming attack.
im shocked you didnt go into the fact that ceasar goes from speaking one word in the first movie to barely using sign language in this one. to me it showed he came full circle and was not to different from humans especially with his rage and grief
He talked about his speech improvement when talking about caesars age
I look at Caesar killing Nova's father as a little allusion to how his mother died. That man was only trying to protect his daughter, just as Bright Eyes sought to protect an infant Caesar.
I do think the ending with Caeser dying to lead his people to the promised land a fitting and pretty much perfect end for his arc. It could have been the end of the reboot series and it would have been a good ending but I am glad it set up the new presumably trilogy starting with movie 4!
Having the new one set 300 years later helps separate it from the previous three films
@@JoeyTorrierijr yeah it’s about the legacy of Caesar tried to stand for his people but people choosing to ignore or use that legacy for their own agendas. It’s pretty good movie
@redlox2 I'm seeing it tonight. Looking forward to it
@@JoeyTorrierijr have fun!
"Next week... more desert???"

@@ZainAli-cm4su he already did that movie
Bad Ape brought integral light/levity to this extremely somber and heavy atmosphere. Some criticized it as silly or cheap laughs, but without that degree of tonal break this movie would have been just too heavy for broad audiences. EXCELLENT choice and execution
Nova is the most important character of this movie. She saved Ceasar's life and reminded him of the goodness in humanity. Without her Ceasar would have pulled the trigger.
According to IMDB: The final shot was originally Caesar's eyes closing for the last time, than a cut to black. After discussing the scene with Andy Serkis; Matt Reeves and Serkis decided the audience needed to see Caesar actually die, with Maurice stroking his leg to comfort him as he died. In addition, Maurice's final speech was originally written as sign language. While filming, Reeves decided it would add emotional resonance to the scene if Maurice spoke the words. As it would be the first time in the trilogy that his character talked.
That’s awesome!
However, Maurice did speak in Dawn, although his voice was different. He said, “RUN” to the humans at one point
Plus, there's when he tells the young girl that she is Nova. But regardless the speech is incredibly impactful since his speech has been so limited, so the point still stands!
would have hit harder if they showed the panorama, the rise up, back to caesar's eyes, and then watching as they close. bonus points for a reflection of the promised land in his eyes.
What I love so much is just how much they rely on the simplicity of words, gestures and facial expression. Nova putting the flower broke me.
I saddens me that quite a few people missed out on these movies because they assumed they were just weird. I have many friends who never saw them believing them to not be serious movies, and that's such a shame because they are in fact amazing movies. Had the movies not been about apes the writing action and cinematography would easily carry it on its own, yet on top of that it has the unique hook of being about super realistic depictions of intelligent apes. Luckily most were able to look past it and they of course were pretty damn successful, but I honestly feel like they deserve even more.
12:20 I love that you mention the recent research because there are still way too many people who believe the stereotypes about neanderthals including that they were "dumb cavemen" and that we killed them all.
As someone who has a passionate interest for Paleolithic times and especially earlier hominids, it always makes me smile when people actually read the latest research about Neanderthals!
@@Fallenfaefolk you're fucking stupid and weird for associating ethnicities with species, and not a single bit of your wording in this comment alleviates that
I think it was combination of the two. Part of them was killed by cromagnones, part of them bred with them. Also, there is the fact that cromagnones were generaly more efficient hunters, which meant they managed to snag most of the prey. Note that I didn´t say "better", but "more efficient". While neanderthals were stronger and bulkier, they usualy preffered close combating the target (also made sense since they lived mostly in foresty areas of Europe), which led to higher risk of injury. Cromagnones used mostly ranged weapons, like spears, so they could get prey more easily. Also, their slimmer, not-so-big-and-bulky-boddies needed less energy, and thus less food. So we basicaly outcompeted them.
Also, fun fact, every white person (or, basicaly, every person except the ones whose ancestors never left Africa since the dawn of humanity - and yes, those still exist, mainly in some african tribes) has at least SOME percentage of Neanderthal DNA.
My only issue with this movie was killing Blue Eyes
I liked his development in DAWN and was really hoping to see him carrying Caesar's legacy
Yeah they could make a hate human ape and a good humans ape
Like his family is divide by Ceasar himself and his views
i think it’s something i love about this series. nobody is ever safe, like ever. it keeps the stakes high and always keeps you wondering what’s next
@@edgeward4494 But killing him right at the beginning felt really disrespectful
@@LeonardoKlotz as fair as that is, i think it was necessary to really push caesar’s motives. seeing all of dawn to get blue eyes to actually see his father in the right light, see how he matured by calming down winter, to being the vessel that ultimately brought out the worst in caesar, yet also the reason why they were able to be freed. had caesar, maurice, rocket, and luca not went on their own, they would have never made it out
@@LeonardoKlotz That's exactly the point. The movie got you to feel like something unjust occurred right from the beginning, and so you're more attached to Caesar in his quest for revenge.
Finally, one of my fave trilogies completely covered by this channel!
18:40 The Colonel still remembers who he is, what his life mission was, and knows what he is now. I think through that he also realizes that his son was still in there, that this virus wouldn't have wiped out humanity but instead just strip away some of the fineries. He is reaping all of his actions and in the original scene is visually begging Ceaser to kill him.
I love how Maurice says that Caesar sounds like Koba which is true but there is still a difference. Even tho Caesar says that he also can not let go of his hate he first makes sure that his apes are safe. His apes came first which is where him and Koba are different
I LOVE that Michael Giacchino composed the score for War and Dawn. I love Rise, but the music doesn't compare to what Giacchino wrote. The motifs shown in both films for certain characters just make you identify with them all the more and keep you engaged in their stories!
I only now noticed that Bad Ape has the best grasp of the spoke word out of all the apes in three movies. All of his lines are verbal and unlike the other apes, you don’t get the sense that speaking hurts or is uncomfortable. The spoken word sounds natural to him and that’s pretty impressive.
Also let’s not everrrrr gloss over how incredibly life like this film looks. It’s so easy to forget that you’re looking at a fully computer generated image top to bottom as opposed to real apes.
It's the best animation I have ever seen. Hands down. Even Avatar, though it's on that level, has certain advantages such as completely creating the world as well. It helps everything to look the same.
Caesar's trilogy is creating apes in the real world where we should be able to tell the difference, but they look so good! (Also, can't gloss over Andy Serkis either).
Such a good ending to the trilogy. Maurice really shines in this one, definetly one of the best characters of the saga.
Perfect example of subverted expectations... You expect Preacher to be the one to turn and help Caesar free the apes but its Donkey who pulls through to save the day... And sacrificing himself for it after betraying apes to stay alive. *Chef's kiss*
Ps: Maurice saying "us" instead of "apes" another perfect moment
Much of the sign language is fairly accurate even some of the parts that seem a bit off are probably more comparable to GSL (Gorilla Sign Language) since apes don't have the exact same range of movement with their hands and figures that we do.
3:32 I've also always loved that line considering that Serkis also mo-cap as King Kong in the 2005 version
the zoom in on rockets annoyed face at 11:42 is killing me
It's less annoyed amd more "are you fucking kidding me..." but i died too.
That and the thumbs up xD
War is absolutely my favourite of the trilogy, and it's for something that you only touched on here. Nova's relationship with the apes. Going from travelling with them out of necessity to becoming invested in their plight, joining the salute and getting her name (honestly amazed you missed out the "brave?" "BRAVE!" exchange between her and Maurice) is kind of the reverse of the decision to kill Koba. Koba made himself Not-Ape, Nova made herself Ape. In a way it's also a chance to do what Will did for Caesar, but Caesar's not in the right state of mind for it and so Maurice has to get the acceptance started (because he's the best like that).
I'm also just easily persuaded by stories where someone is accepted as they are.
What I found interesting is how the Soldiers called the Apes Kongs evident by the “A Good Kong is a Dead Kong” sign at the camp Winter was at, and with my love for the Monsterverse I can only wonder if the Titanus Kong species can ever be at the same level as the Apes in the Pota trilogy with Kong being the Caesar of a new Kong family he’s wanted for so long.
If you wanna know how that crossover would look like then check out "Kong on the Planet of the Apes" comic by Boom Studios! Though it's set in original movie timeline between 1 and 2 not the reboot trilogy.
@@Deadgod91 I’ve actually heard of it, I didn’t see anything of it but I think I heard of it, King Kong’s from the “King Kong of Skull Island” comic series.
According to Matt Reeves: the name of the group of rebelling humans are the Alpha and Omega, a reference to the bomb the mutants worshiped in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). *The logo on their helmets and flag matches the original logo on the bomb.*
It's also a reference to a bible verse, where the alpha and the omega means the beginning and the end
@@pixel3042
The term predates The Bible, by a long way. It's just Greek for first and last, beginning and end, etc.
Matt Reeves should bring Michael Seresin to work in the sequel of THE BATMAN
They did a great job working together in these movies
If Greig Fraser bails out due to Dune Messiah, then Michael should definitely be his replacement!
I really think Matt Reeves moved a step up in his filmmaking from this movie to The Batman as well. He may never be thought of as the next Scorsese but he's started two beloved trilogies. Most people can't even manage one.
Just saw THREE essays on YT about this trilogy and you post this! Love it!
One of my favorite details is only implied: Winter knew that the humans would attack the apes' home the night they held their council on leaving. When he urgest them to leave that same night, it's not just him being a coward. It was an attempt to save their lives.
I feel like war is so underrated in the trilogy!
I think it’s one of the best movies ever created 🔥👏🏼
I remember seeing someone suggest, after the observation that gorillas would be too heavy to ride horses, that the gorillas in this film could have specifically ridden draught horses to support their weight, and that would have been cool as hell to see!
My favourite part of this specific film is in the scene when Maurice helps the girl and it cuts to her on his horse with him the island in the background is at a beach I surf at almost everyday😁🙏
This trilogy is really just incredible. And I'm happy to say that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is an amazing continuation.
Hats off to the artists from WETA, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Rupert Wyatt, and Matt Reeves.
And of course, Andy Serkis and all the other actors portraying the Apes in these films. And Michael Giacchino's music in this film is one of his best, especially 'Exodus Wounds' for the death of Blue Eyes and Cornelia and 'A Man Named Suicide' for The Colonel's death.
Truly one of the best in Film History, up with The Lord of the Rings and the Original Star Wars.
I don't know if this is a win but props to the continuity in this film specifically with the whip scars on ceaser's back They carry through the rest of the movie to solidify "scars make you strong"
i do like there is some interpration on what exactly the the mutated virus does to humans. It clearly makes humans mute (like the little girl) but in the Colonal's eyes it makes them devolve into savages which isnt necassary true. the little girl was mute but she acted pretty much as expected as a little girl could act in the situation.
of course maybe in the Colonal's eyes turning mute and losing one of the most fundamental parts of being human IS the same as becoming a savage and devolving?
just my personal thoughts.
And she still learned how to communicate with sign language; so human ability to verbalize their thoughts is limited, but not to communicate.
@@eldorados_lost_searcher I do think the fact the colonel willingly killed himself (and previous begged Caesar to kill him) show in his mind someone who cannot communicate is not worthy of being human aka is better dead then alive.
I mean a large part of humans being humans is our ability to communicate and create, if we lose that are we even human anymore. If anything the recent film, not to go into spoilers, proved that colonel right, humans do devolve and apes become dominant
I guess that is why the other party wanted to defeat the colonal because this can be probably be treated by doctors which colonal didn't believe
Cinemawins, thanks again for putting another great positive-received film in here. I hope you’re gonna put and review kingdom of the planet of the apes in your channel too because two days earlier before the movie came out yesterday, it managed get positive reviews from critics and planet of the apes fans of the original films and 1963 book the iconic franchise is widely and famously based on and got a 7.3/10 on IMDb.
Maurice is the Samwise Gamgee of this trilogy
Bad Ape is what Sméagol could’ve/wanted to be.
Caesar and Koba are basically professor X and Magneto (and therefore MLK & Malcolm X figures)
Woody Harrelson’s Colonel is effectively Bolivar trask.
This trilogy has no right to be as good as it is but having such strong foundations in characters and allegories is exactly why it works so well
Maurice is and always will be one of my most favorite characters from this series
Literally the best movie in the franchise and one of my personal favs
I like how the final apes that are there at the end are the ones who were at the sanctuary In The first movie. Maurice and rocket were the first two apes who Cesar interacted with. I also like how Cesar talks like a person because he essentially inherited his intelligence. Same thing goes for Dawn because you notice right away that only Cesar and Koba really talk, because they were the first two to receive the virus. Love when movies tie in like that.
One of the best Trilogies of modern cinema. The fact it made waves in the hight of Marvel popularity. It's just amazing! I love these films
You mean all time, nothing really compares that i can think of.
I revere this story probably more than any other fiction.

Speaking of Bay Area of the Apes, while the Simian Flu was definitely global, are there intelligent apes outside of North America? I can’t imagine Caesar’s crew crossed the Atlantic or Pacific.
Maybe none of the apes did, but the original serum that was mass produced could have been shipped overseas, and when there was noone to maintain it (since, ya know, most of humanity was wiped out), the containers could become loose over time and start leaking the gas.
Also, there is the fact that Simian flu is not only transferrable from ape to human, but also could be vice-versa. So if somebody took their kid in early stages of the sickness, when nobody knew exactly what it was and how dangerous it was, to a zoo or circus and the kid or parent sneezed at the ape exhibit...
I am once again asking for everything great about The Bad Guys
4:35 i always loved how evocative the score was of anakin's dark deeds from revenge of the sith - both tracks do an excellent job of hammering home just how brutal their respective scenes are and i don't think either scene would work as well as they do without the soundtrack
What a great vid to end the Caesar Trilogy! You should do an "Everything GREAT about" ARGYLLE and PREY sometime. Please!
I've always loved the dichotomy of Rocket and Koba, one of them was Caesars first rival and later became a trusted friend, the other one went from trusted friend to actual villain
Also Apes holding guns will never not go hard, Luca with an FN FAL is probably my favorite
I know people haven't always enjoyed this rendition of PotA but i absolutely adore it. I rewatch these movies again and again and the first time I saw each one in cinemas i was blown away by the gorgeous CG. I love these movies!

The alpha omega symbol is also on the Nuke buried in the far future in beneath the planet of the apes

I just watched this 2 nights ago and immediately thought I wonder if CinemaWins has put this out. Good Timing!
Da cinema king is back baby he neva miss we're eating good today y'all
Maurice is possibly my favorite character in the entire franchise, but in this film, Bad Ape just deserves all of the love. Steve Zahn absolutely NAILED his performance and Bad Ape just made you want all of this to end.
Apes Together Strong was such a great score that was sprinkled throughout the film that gave that light hearted note in such a war heavy movie. First starting when we’re introduced to Nova that was the human element that kept Cesar not going full hatred towards humans. To then being in such an impactful moment where she aided Cesar in the cage giving him the motivation to keep going strong with the rest of the Apes. Was hoping this was going to be talked about more but there’s so much to love about the film and the trilogy so it can be easy to look over but such an important piece of the puzzle. One of favorite scores from a movie and by the legendary Michael giacchino. I hope we get more soft light hearted scores like this in whatever his next soundtracks are.
This may come as a shock to a lot of people here, but I am an albino like Winter, and I feel for the Gorilla. I'm not sure whether he was the only one in the group (there may have been more who died earlier on in the story), but it is pretty tragic the way he went out. A traitor to Cesear's teachings, and cause. Rest in Peace, Winter. Rest in Peace.
Okay, I still struggle with the inherent silliness of these movies - I find it hard to suspend disbelief seeing a silver back on horse back clutching a machine gun, but your breakdowns makes me want to at least try finishing the Caesar trilogy having now seen the first one (at my husband's urging) and watch your breakdowns, I think I can maybe try the other 2.
Those phrases on the soldiers helmets set the tone perfectly for this movie. Bedtime for Bonzo is an apt reference.
This is my favourite series released in modern times. It's so well written, acted, the CGI is amazing, the film making and cinematography is beautiful as well as foreboding.
It's such a magnifying glass on the human condition. There are some people who want the chaos, there are those of us with empathy and compassion but as a flip side to that coin that compassion and empathy can cause someone to loose their humanity.
Ceasar is an amazing protagonist, he doesn't kill out of malace it's all to save his people. He looses his way and lets his emotions take over but he always comes back to the greater good of his race.
Koba haunts him, was he right? Was he stronger, was he the one who understood more then Ceasar? Can humans be good as all he has seen of good humans was rare.
It's brilliant story telling. I'll watch these over and over Its one of those series. Every single one is good in their own way. It's sorely missed in the average films of the 2020s. These films are the way you send a message not jamming it down people's throats. Connecting with characters who are flawed but ultimately do the right thing.
Amazing films absolutely amazing.
Amazing trilogy. Cesar one of my favourite characters of all time

i love this so much the only thing is i wish you mentioned the theme of the movie ( the song ) its so well made and fits into every scene its in, it doesn't over stay its welcome and it perfect at the right moments, it bounces to the themes when it needs to and all around its amazing.
love the video
Ceaser spoke more like a human in this I love that he had to learn to get use to it but now he speaks like he’s been practicing sense dawn
You are amazing ngl. Wish i had friends like you. I dont like cynics you are the best type of person
Rocket really is the unsung hero (but in the video he gets his right wins) as he went from Caesar’s first enemy to his left hand man then a brother, who follows him since Caesar showed him mercy and lifted him up like the other apes. He’s just a loyal best bro 😎
14:45 - Wife hears this in the back “Sounds about right to me” 😂😂
Also 21:22- On Cuhhhh 💀💀💀 Sorry the set up was just set for these zingers my being couldnt resist
24:21 to be fair taking swings like that is actually necessary more than you think. Dark subject matter like that drives the point home and makes the emotional beats land SO MUCH HARDER.
I'm so sad you didn't mention (SPOILERS) the moment in the escape tunnel with Nova and Maurice where she asks if she's an ape. Not only does it mirror in Rise when Caesar asks Will if he's an ape or a human, but the poignant moment where Maurice tells her she's Nova (implying that she doesn't need to view herself through the lens of her species, but rather as an individual!
I'm biased due to my love of Maurice, but this moment solidified my favoritism of this one in the trilogy (even if Dawn had a more engaging "themes" and the character of Koba).
Michael Giacchino‘s score is an underrated part of this movie.
If you listen to the music from all three movies, the music progressively goes from modern to more primitive as the series progresses.
Biiiiiig props to Andy Serkis for carrying an entire trilogy with his performance. He really gave us one of the best characters of the last decadeand made me bawl my eyes out for an ape! 🤟
Andy Serkis not getting proper recognition for how fantastic his performance is was such a failure. He's a pioneer when it comes to mocap performances and paved the way for what it is becoming. It seems that he's slowly transitioning to a more off screen career now. But anytime he does show up on camera its a treat and you know he'll knock it out the park
The small scope of these movies is something I have to commend. My loathing for scope creep comes mostly from how games keep doing it and ruining their own perfectly good premise, but all media does this to some degree because theres a thing in writing where you feel obliged to tell the most important story in your setting. Like, if theres a small community dealing with a disaster in one part of the setting, but an alien god is invading the Earth on the other side of the planet, storytellers feel obliged to do the second one.
But they shouldn't feel the need to make every story as big and important as they possibly can. These movies being so contained to just one tribe of apes, and one band in that tribe at that, is what makes them so good. You'd expect "War for the Planet of the Apes" to be a sweeping epic with thousands of characters but we wouldn't really be able to connect to any of that, and the stakes wouldn't feel real. Stakes is the big one, as the stakes get larger, they only become more engaging up to a certain point, any higher and they don't just stop being relatable, they stop being something the audience can believe will happen. But by keeping the focus tight on this small group and the stakes reasonable, theres so much more tension and the setting has so much depth that hasn't been explored or rendered irrelevant.
Thats the other thing, storytellers believe, rightly or not, that an audience doesn't really accept a lowering of stakes or a lowering of scope in subsequent entries in a franchise. If Caesers story was this enormous epic, all that potential of other Apes developing separately? Wasted, because you can't tell that story, because it would be a smaller story than Ceasers story was.
Such a brilliant understandable review for a trilogy as perfect as this one.
So lucky to have watched this before the new Apes movie that's about to release while knowing that it may be good, but it'll never be THIS good.
And Maurice is the most loyal to Ceaser in my eyes Rocket a close second
Glad I decided to watch through this trilogy now, then I saw cinemawins doing it aswell. Great stuff
Woody Harrelson's The Colonel really shone in this movie. He's a combination of Apocalypse Now's Colonel Kurtz & Captain Willard.
Hey I'm not sure if this is how you submit suggestions but here we go. I've been working my way through your body if work and thank you for magic sword and the in depth about Get Out. I'd suggest The Thirteenth Warrior. It's my favorite Viking movie that got a lot of hate from critics back in the day. Maybe bc imdb existed past 9/11 but having an Arab see the Northmen wasn't in vogue. It's great
Something I appreciate about Dawn and War together is it manages to maintain that ultimately, the apes will eventually dominate the planet not because they defeated the humans, but the humans defeated themselves.
The Simian Flu was spread not from apes to humans, but humans to humans. The efforts to maintain human civilization results in human infighting.
