Produced by the American Dairy Association by Bob Atcher Films, Inc., this short film from the 1960s is both a home economics instructional film, and a promotional for dairy products. The film examines some of the new ideas in the kitchen that a girl learned in her home economics class. She also shares these with her mother. The film particularly focuses on a new ingredient “instant non-fat dry milk” and the girl uses this to make different recipes for a party, such as meatloaf, a pie, brownies, pizza, and a punch. The mother is constantly accompanying her daughter and is impressed that she is learning many new things as well.

I took a drink each time someone said “non-fat dry milk”. Now I’m drunk. 😵💫
p.s. I also want that balloon lama that’s on the wall
no you didn't you're still conscious and able to move!!! either that or it's the cheap 40 proof swill!!
This sure was a strange advertisement for their "local telephone company."
And now I have alcohol poisoning

Her passion for instant non fat dry milk is remarkable.
And disturbing.
The secret ingredient for the brownies wasn't powdered milk.
It’s actually kind of sad that this is considered funny. I mean, I get it. But still, I miss the past when most people wouldn’t have even understood the joke.
When I was growing up in the 70's, we called it powdered milk and that is all we had in the house to drink. It was a cheaper milk than fresh. We were very poor. Nowadays powdered milk is more expensive than the regular. I use it to make homemade cocoa mix and cooking in emergencies.
All of that cook and serving wares are returning; they're calling it "Mid-Century Retro", or something like that...that was junk we couldn't wait to get rid of...🤣
Cleanest oven on Earth!
Even after the meat loaf was baked...
I love this so much! The kitchen, the cast, the food they prepared. If I could have joined them in real life, I would. It would be fun to spend a day cooking and eating with them!
The daughter's voice is incredibly annoying though. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard.
I appreciate this for 2 reasons. I learned 2 recipes. I also loved the old days. Thanks 👍
@@aliceitty Well thank you. You are not only pretty but you cook! Message me anytime ? Maybe I can learn from you. Have a great day hun. 🙂
I agree about the recipes. I think I wouldn't add peaches to othe meatloaf though, maybe tomato sauce or ketchup instead. And, I'd probably use breadcrumbs instead of the powdered milk.
@@brucemoriarty9964 Not really a cook. I prefer take out but it gets expensive. I learn these recipes from the internet.
@@aliceitty ok , but ya can message me anytime ya want. You seem like a nice person.. and thanks for the replies 🙂
I think this is a commercial for instant non fat dried milk.
I think i should go buy some instant non fat dried milk.
There could be a great variety of recipies I could cook with instant non fat dried milk.
The world is such a better place with instant non fat dried milk.
Haha. Love me some instant non fat dry milk
I too will buy some INSTANT NON FAT DRIED MILK.I will enjoy it in many ways.Yum.
The title does mention that the video was produced by the American Dairy Association.
What was it? Instant non fat dry milk?
I use dry whole milk often...
I love these cheerful, nostalgic PSAs no matter how unrealistic.😊
As someone that cooked family dinners from the time I was 10-11 it is realistic lol Mom was nowhere to be seen, of course, but otherwise this was my childhood. I even had my own home ec scrapbook...
I am an old geezer and I remember taking a home economics class in high school. Of particular use was the explanation of measurements; e.g., how many pints in a quart. You get the idea. I remember too they taught us how to balance a checking account. Sounds pretty basic but was a great use in only a few years when I was in college. The topic I really, really wish the teacher would have made part of her curriculum: taxes. I was completely lost when I got my first job and had to select withholding amounts. Or the first year I had to file federal and state tax forms. But, by god, I can still tell you how many pints in a quart!
"Why don't I make some brownies and freeze 'em for the party" LMAO!
"I've finished the Hi-Fi brownies" Double LMAO
"This HiFi cooler is a special kind of punch the girls would go for"
TRIPLE LMAO!!!
In case you're wondering, I substituting mamajuana in my head every time they say "Hi-Fi".
"I better get with it" 🤣
I can't remember the last time I saw veal in the meat section at my store.
My biological mother was a lousy cook. I learned to cook after I moved out and found what real food is supposed to taste like.
I didn't know we had the same mother!
What about biological father? He couldn’t cook either?
i've been to the mess she worked in!!!
The only food my mum cooked were meat loaf and boiled hot-dogs; at age 84, she still thinks asparagus grows in a can...Army chow hall meat loaf was better than hers...😬 A few weeks ago she brought by some veggies that a neighbour had given her: "They gave me all these cucumbers." "Mum, they're zucchinis." "Well, I don't eat that Chinese food..." 🙄🙄🙄
at least she tried...I hope..
I enjoy watching recipe videos, just didn't expect to find one here. Thanks, Periscope.
Hilarious. I didn't even know there was such a thing as Instant Non Fat Dried Milk - sounds deee-licious😂
it's just powered milk every store keeps it!!!
I love how she buys a gallon of ice cream after buying non fat powdered milk. One the trials of life is children cooking, or "secret pizza night."'
Good GRACIOUS that daughter had a super-thick Upper-midwest accent! WOW!
I enjoyed her accent. She didn’t use like or um once. Today’s youth could learn something from her .
Back when the government and the American Dairy Assoc ramped up the push for the public to consume more dairy products to help the dairy industry from going under. Where do you think all that "Government Cheese" came from.
Actually, it wasn’t simply a dairy industry campaign; it was more so a campaign to deal with dairy product manufacturing byproducts- especially skim milk. Eventually, the public adopted skim milk as an off the shelf product, sold as a “healthier” low-fat, low-calorie version of milk; but in the 1950s and 1960s most people were still consuming whole milk. Rather than disposing skim milk, or feeding it to livestock, the dairy council developed several products that used skim milk, and eventually launched a massive campaign to get Americans to even begin drinking it in the 1970s as a healthier alternative to whole and 2% milk.
That punch needs VODKA!
LOL!!! OMG!! I said the exact same thing!!
My mother was a big believer in doctoring up mixes for daily convenince but nothing was called homemade unless it came from scratch. Most of this would be "cooking out of a box or can" to her.
👍 same, thank goodness we never used these types of highly processed food , this is fake food , unnatural food which has now been discovered to cause inflammation of the joints , bowel cancer and many other allergies. It would be laughable if it wasn’t such a huge cause of unnecessary suffering especially in my generation.
I can watch these all day!!!! Love the innocence that is in them. A world without the stuff we have today. Very peaceful. That backround music as well.
Who wants non-fat dried milk powder after this video? 😋😛😝
I looked on my grocery store app and it's no longer cheaper than just buying a jug of milk. The package I looked at would be nearly $9 and would yield two gallons of milk.
I think it used to be an affordable alternative. I've never bought it though. Carol would be ashamed of me. 😆
@@jenniferhansen3622 Lol, that is most unfortunate. Seems like this type of milk powder would only be useful for those who consume very little milk on an infrequent basis, & don't want to purchase a large quantity at any given time, just to have it spoil.
We always had Carnation dry milk on hand just in case we ran out of regular milk. It was always disappointing to eat cereal with that watery poor imitation for milk. Now I had it stored for SHTF scenarios
Those were the days...watery milk with my corn flakes...
We did too, and it was gross. Then a miracle occurred and our doctor told my mom I needed to drink only whole milk (I was very skinny). I had my own supply of the primo stuff, while the rest of the family suffered with skim milk, either wet or dry. I was fortunate in another way as well, as the calcium in milk needs milk fat in order to be absorbed by the body.
I missed the "AMERICAN DAIRY ASSOC." in the title initially and was kind of puzzled by all dry dairy at first lol
What’s the theme for this video? NON FAT DRIED MILK
Nothing like wholesome cooking to keep the family healthy
Did anyone else notice that when she measured the dry ingredients, she didn’t fill the cup up?
Its probably to save on filming costs
Yes I was thinking about that lol
non fat dried milk
This video brought to you by INSTANT NON FAT DRIED MILK.
American Dairy Association, actually. 😉
Ground Ham? That’s new to me…interesting.
That's how ham loaf is made.. I take it you've never made one..
I appreciate this.
trying the Chiffon pie recipe tonight for dessert, except I'm going to use orange concentrate as Mama suggested instead of the frozen strawberries.
How did your pie turn out?
During her home economics class, Carol was replaced by someone from the instant nonfat dry milk company.
“Malk”.
The canned stuff--cream of corn, brussal sprouts, green beans, peas. Into the pockets they went.
Dog got ‘em.
I use dry whole milk often...
I wish Rifftrax would get their hands on this
1954 ? My mom was a teenager and this same hair style and clothing back then .
After you drink Carols special punch and eat her High 5 brownies, the kids are really gonna want that pizza!
"He's no dreamboat!"
I resemble that remark.
Why does "teenage daughter" have a wedding ring? #oops 🤣
Oh my word... We NEVER cooked like that and I was raised in the 60's. Powdered milk was not an ingredient in our household nor were the sugar-saturated dishes that were prepared in this video. Meat, tossed salad, vegetable and a starch (potatoes, rice, etc.) - thank goodness!
I've just been brainwashed by the big non fat dried milk industry.
Big non fat dry milk strikes again!
A recipe I have from that time period called for non-instant dry milk. The recipe further explained that instant dry milk was so bulky that measurements could be inaccurate.
What was the deal with announcing the number size of the can. For example number 2 1/2 can of peaches. Were can sizes not uniform? Or why not say use a 32 ounce can of peaches?
That was the most Elmira sounding thing to ever Elmira.
How sweet. I needed that. 😊
Is anyone even going to notice a 1/2 teaspoon of salt in that much stuff?
Or 1/8 teaspoon of pepper? They liked food sweet and bland.
When I was growing up in the 1980’s, my mother made taco meat with ketchup. Most midwesterners weren’t accustomed to spicy foods.
In fact, one of the first wildly known Mexican restaurants in the United States to open to non-Mexican people (remember, this was before the Civil Rights Act and businesses discriminated, including businesses that refused to serve Caucasian people) was Casa De Fritos in Disney Land which opened in 1955. That helped to launch Mexican food into the wider public in the United States. This is also why Americans believed traditional Mexican ingredients included corn chips, black olives, sour cream, and cheddar cheeses for decades; they were Americanized versions of traditional Mexican foods because they didn’t know better, and most Americans were introduced to Mexican cooking through cookbooks by Betty Crocker and Better Homes and Gardens.
NOTHING is spicy at Taco Bell-- that's for sure. @@lightblueseaglass
She looks like she's thinking is this my kid, or did they get them mixed up in the hospital.
The daughter's accent tells me that she must be from the Chicago area.
I don't mind a Chicago accent but something about this girl's voice is really grating.
It's actually more of a Wisconsin or Minnesota accent.. a true Chicago accent isn't quite that thick.
@@Nunofurdambiznez She was probably from the Midwest so she had a Midwest accent, but then she was also trying to put on that transatlantic accent like old movie stars used. I think it was kind of a mix of the two. 🙃
I need more Nonfat Dry Milk!
WTF is a number 2-1/2 can of peaches?!?
Malk*
@@johnp139 exactly what she sed it was lol. Just kidding.....I'm sure it's a unit of measurement they used at the time. Something that did work or catch on. Live these videos. So much to learn from

LIGHT CHILDREN C-5 by William Loose at 3:45 ! Classic! Gumbym, Screen Gems, even Looney Tunes and John Kricfalusi-Nickelodeon icon stock!
It's quite a lot of meat for this recipe! And the daughter cooks all by herself, I like that. No bothersome parent, lol!!
I want know more about how non-fat dry milk was used in the production of lunch meat and sausages.
Does anyone know if you can use ground beef instead of veal?
Yes, but I’d use two eggs because veal is more tender and has more moisture than beef. I’d also use very lean beef to restrain the beef flavor since the flavor largely comes from fat. Lastly, I’d increase the ham to 3/4 lbs, and reduce the ground beef to 1&1/4lbs of ground beef. Also, consider adding a little orange juice to the glaze to add a little extra sweetness. Good luck!
Yep, Carol could be my wife. She was "trained" right!
It's obvious to see why your red flag ass is single.😬
DIY Miracle Whip?
They’ve got the rooster & hot air balloon Pyrex! ❤
Looks like the kitchen/dining room of the Brady Bunch
Earlier, _Leave It to Beaver_ , or _I Love Lucy_ .
huh?? not even CLOSE to the Brady Bunch kitchen.. go back and watch a full episode of the Brady Bunch and then watch this again... They're no where near close to each other.
No peaches on my meatloaf, please.
Apparently, “back in the day” you didn’t have to post that this was a paid advertisement.
Because these were usually shown between double features at movie theaters, and most people were smart enough to know this was an advertisement.
Grilled Cheeze or a Hot Dog with potato chips and a Coke ! 🥴
And some non fat dried milk
high blood pressure and a stroke coming right up!
The girl's Chicago accent is fabulous. Thick as a brick.
Nonfat dry milk obviously sponsored this. When I was a child milk was treated like it was a magic potion that made you healthy and fit with nice teeth and bones. We could drink as much as we wanted any time of the day or night. When the 2% milk started to be thought healthier we tried it and it seemed like water.
Mahm!!!
I laughed so stupidly hard at this!😂😂😂
Haven’t seen any fresh yeast since 2002.
One of my boyfriend's mother used to trap wild yeast to make bread. She said that the results were always an adventure.
This is how America got diabetes??? Trading fat for sugar
Well, not really. Non-fat dried milk was a popular ingredient at that time because there really wasn’t “lean meat,” and lard was still a staple in most homes. The non-fat milk helped to absorb fat, which helped to prevent foods from being “greasy.”
NON FAT DRY MILK!!!!! i get it.
That veal looks a lot ground beef. And the mashed potatoes are orange.
They did mention that they were mashed sweet potatoes so they would be orange.
They were orange because they were mashed sweet potatoes
You clearly didn't pay attention during the video...LOL!!
I need to get schooled like mom!
Sharon needs to stop calling...Carol has too much work to do with her dry milk!
This looks more like the 1950's , unless it may have been 1960 .
Really pushing that instant non-fat dry milk
They say nonfat dry milk 19 times
I wonder if these people are lactose intolerant now?!?! 🤣
Too bad commercials can't be like this now, both informational, propagandal, AND they still somehow taught a thing.
I will be honest with y'all. I keep dry powdered milk in my kitchen for my coffee. It has no sugar (Coffee Mate and such has that High Fructose stuff) , and it does the trick when you run out of milk . I made this for a house guest once - on short notice , and they said "It tastes like DINER coffee" . Not sure if that meant GOOD or BAD. LOL. That meatloaf is gonna taste like HAM loaf with the cloves and fruit juice . Weird. I had the feeling she was gonna make traditional 1950s "meat loaf" with the tomato sauce on the top which totally fell out of favor by the 1970s . In the 1990s when I decided to go all out Vegetarian ; I had a fun "meatloaf" recipe that used bread crumbs, crushed walnuts and a can of peas ! I loved making it and it was delicious with brown mushroom gravy from scratch ! Lastly ; the turquoise Pyrex bowl has a cute pattern with pilgrims and a wheat motif. They are now "collectible" but when you find them , the have a lot of wear from the harsh dishwashing detergents back in the day when washing machines were new.
1-1/2 hours seems really excessive for a small loaf pan of meatloaf.
Not really, it takes some time for the meat to cook through to the center.
That was three pounds of meat...that's a pound for each of them....😳
@@XanthusBarnabas Yum! lots of meatloaf available for leftovers. Meatloaf sandwich, anyone?
@@surlyogre1476that meatloaf would be excellent sliced thin and pan fried for sandwiches with a little mayo, mustard, and sliced white onion!
Plus with the basting it probably takes longer...
Lies! We didn’t have a cooking style at the time. We were too stoned. Bucket of KFC to cure the munchies was more like it. Just an add for powdered milk.
You musta come from the rich $$$ side of town all we had was potato chips a coke and some Bazooka Joe Bubble gum
if we got KFC it's Because we robbed the joint (We only did that when we were REALLY REALLY STONED)
then we learned to cut powdered milk with baby laxative (WOLLA COCAINE we could sell and buy Ronny the 🤡burgers)
“ it’s so easy to have on hand, and to use mom!” 😂🤮
Bossy, brassy daughter never says please or thank you, and says “melk” instead of “milk”
Sort of like that vegan guy who thought strawberry "melk" was made from strawberries!
She's so obnoxious!
Ground ham ??????
You've clearly never made a ham loaf before...
America was better then.
How can you eat all those animals?
A young Karen! 😂😂
Dairy propaganda 🤣🤣🤣
Milk does not belong in most all those things, especially punch!
If this was made today it would be showing how to use the drive up and McDonalds.
Man that daughters voice is annoying
So, you don't like the sound of intelligent people. That says a lot about your lack of intelligence.
Agreed, very high-pitched. In her defense, it may be an artifact of the recording process... but probably not.
Thank you!! I've been feeling the same way. I almost can't stand to hear her talk.
You know, I look back at films from this era and I'm reminded of how screwed up the country was not at the time, back when girls or girls and knew they were girls and identified as girls and more dresses. The girls that you stayed away from were the ones who wore pants! The boys were boys who identified as boys and it was common when they would go out shopping everybody would get dressed up, but when the man would go to a basketball game they would wear ties. People can say what they want about the '50s and early '60s, but the world was a lot simpler at that time than it is now
I remember the first baseball game we went to as a family. My father wore a suit and I wore a skirt and blouse.
Manners were much better as well since chivalry was not dead. When we had company for dinner, I would have to quietly stand behind my chair until some gentleman would seat me. It was annoying as a kid but now I truly miss those times.
Maybe it was the good old days for you being white and a male.
Women alawys look highly attractive in aprons, while masterfully looking after a kitchen

oh this is as lame as the video game ads in it!!!!!
So, one of the reasons these PSAs were around, especially in the after war period, was somewhat that parents were't ther to raise the kids, mostly for the obvious reasons. Nowadays, you got the same thing, a generation with parents so absent, the state would have to feel responsible, but pfff, much easier to make money of completely hopeless adults.
A lot millennials and Gen X used nannies and day care.
Talk about absent parents.
@@verasmith4767 And some underpaid ass person is gonna replace familial contact? Not saying these PSAs did. My point is, back then gov at least acknowledged the problem.
Actually, most of these films were shown between double features, and the theater was paid to show them. Most of the more educational films, such as those produced by Coronet were shown to teenagers in schools. This film may have been shown to home economic classes, but more likely it was shown between afternoon double features at regular movie theaters.
Wow to be back in the days when they taught girls to cook and not to hate men, lets face it things are not better today, lets learn to get along and not judge others.
Powdered milk 🤮🤮🤮
