I just recently purchased seeds bc none of the nurseries around here have any plants. So I’m nervous about starting seeds, not sure if I’ve got my grams green thumb!
Difficult in your climate, HOWEVER, morning sun afternoon shade, good air flow, try to keep cool in summer. Maybe grow in pots so you can shift them around for best conditions. Let us know how you go with them.

Does anyone know if the roots of these are a strong pain killer? I heard the dicentra formosa was, someone made a tincture and said it was strong like morphine but non addicting

This is one of our favourite plants. Hard to know how dry it actually is, but certainly worth a try, SO get it back into the ground and water well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser. OR maybe a container, good potting mix and part shade. Good luck with it, Stay Safe and Happy Gardening
So its died back for summer? You can either plant it out and keep it slightly moist, or keep it in a container. Either way do not let it dry out. BUT not wet and soggy.
We prefer early spring, just when they are about to start growing. This way they are ready to send out new roots and growth . Dig the clump, use a sharp knife divide the clumps and replant immediately. If you must, you can divide them in late fall, although with a cold wet winter coming, the root disturbance at this time can set them back.
But if Bleeding Heart seeds are bought from somewhere, then do they have to be stored in the freezer for a while before planting, or can they be planted right away?
Best repotted in spring before it starts to shoot. If you really have to repot it when in full growth you must keep the whole root ball in tact if you want it to survive and flower, this can be tricky....

I received a dry root months ago. I planted and watered it inside. It still has not sprouted. I pulled the roots from the pot and planted in a good spot. What are the odds that the plant is dead? Do they go dormant when divided? Thanks.
Not sure which climate zone you are in SO When you removed the plant from the pot did the tuber/rhizome seem fleshy or dry and shrivelled ? If the plant (rhizome /tuber) was dry when you received the plant then thats not a good sign. If it seemed OK, Bleeding Heart Plants are dormant from mid summer to late winter/spring, depends a little on the climate. If its spring in your area then it should be sending up shoots soon. Hope this helps.

They usually do not repeat flower, so we just leave them, let the foliage die back and then clean up the dead foliage.

It should live and flower, however the extra fertiliser will help growth.

Generally we do not prune Bleeding Heart plants at all. They die back over winter so no real need to prune for us.

You could winter as a cold stratification, although I would keep them in the fridge and plant late winter.
