  • Seconds are minutes and minutes are hrs when splitting wood. Upgrading your log splitter pump to a larger pump can significantly increase your productivity! The dump valves main purpose is to reduce the heat build up in the system but it will also slightly increase the return speed of the cylinder.

    Awesome mods, I built an 8 way for my RM 37 ton which worked really well. I really like the extra tank idea, that is an awesome addition with the dump valve.

      @@portercreekWhen I built the 8 way I added 3" extensions on each of the center knives like you had mentioned, it made all the difference in the world. Just an awesome splitter, my buddies all loved that thing, they still talk about it.

    All excellent advice on the hydraulics!!
    Especially the hard 90 degree fittings.
    Only thing I would have done differently is done a second return, instead of "Teeing" the returns together at the tank.

    • @portercreek
      @portercreek  Год назад

      The only reason why I Tee’ed them together like that is because that is how it was done factory. I am finishing my auto cycle valve install and I am removing the hose T and having it T at the tank return instead!

    Very nice modification we just picked up this splitter and wanted to do this upgrade. Can you tell me which dump valve you used I see they sell 2 different GPM versions? Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated

      That's the autocycle valve lol I'm wanting to know about the silver dump valve that returns extra fluid they have 2 different GPM dump valves for return rates $219 or $319 I think were the prices

    Great mods, do you have to upgrade your valves to 28gpm from the 22gpm valves?

    How much more horsepower is that chinese clone then an actual GX390 i wonder?
    Everyone claims you cant run a 28gpm 2 stage pump with a GX390 but im not buying it. Makes me want too try it and just turn down the relief setting to compensate for lower HP i mean, thats a 420cc vs 390 cc but how much does that actually equat to HP? Id love to find out.

    • @portercreek
      @portercreek  6 месяцев назад +1

      I’m not sure how much hp it has but it doesn’t even struggle with the 18gpm pump on it. I don’t know why they aren’t selling it with that pump on it.

    • @boohanlon3305
      @boohanlon3305 6 месяцев назад

      @portercreek i wish someone with an engine dyno would compare the chinese clone 420cc engines output to a GX390 so we could really see. I feel like if the relief PSI on the CV is set to 2500 or less and the honda is healthy a GX390 should pull a 2 stage 28gpm pump without issue. Even at 93% efficiency, they are only 25/26gpm.

    Is that a 4.5 cylinder, with 3" rod?
    I'm estimating 7 point something seconds.
    .
    You get a base line before changes?
    To compare them.

    • @portercreek
      @portercreek  Год назад

      5” bore, 3.5” rod. It specs out at 13 seconds before any mods.

    Why use a 1/2” line going from the dump valve back to the filter? Seems like a massive restrictor.

    • @portercreek
      @portercreek  Год назад +1

      The only 1/2” line is used to activate the pilot on the dump valve. The reason for this only being 1/2” is because fluid isn’t flowing through it, it is just sensing pressure. The line going back to the tank from the dump valve is 3/4”

    • @janosvadas
      @janosvadas Год назад

      Why the reducer then back at the filter.?

    • @portercreek
      @portercreek  Год назад

      @@janosvadas the only reducer back there is a 1-1/4” to 3/4”

    • @janosvadas
      @janosvadas Год назад

      I was just in at central hydraulics and looking at this very thing.
      They make a 3/4” fitting with a 1” barb connection for return lines.
      It would seem talking with them for my own splitter, you’d want that as large as possible.

    • @portercreek
      @portercreek  Год назад

      @@janosvadas I am not a fan of using barbed fittings for return lines. If I went to a larger hose I wouldn’t gain any speed with the splitter. Sometimes return lines are one size bigger than the pressure lines but it is not always the case. I bought this splitter new and they come standard with the 3/4” return lines so instead of replacing all the hoses and taking apart the valve assembly to replace the fitting for the log lift, I decided to stick with the stock size.
