    As a scientist, hearing a popular internet personality say things like "our best models" and "it's just a popular theory because the math works out nice" and "you can never really prove something you just collect evidence to consider a theory probable" absolutely heals my soul. To hear science not necessarily described in detail, but at least depicted accurately in a way that simultaneously explains why the phrase "it's not a perfect science" is an oxymoron while also showing why you can and should trust the scientific method.

    Fauna shows hints of a good educator. She starts with a presentation of the problem or the “gap” in knowledge, the proposed solution or theory, the general merits of the theory, the limitations of the peoposed theory, and finally the recommendations to push forward the theory. • @kingofvwcosmos
    @kingofvwcosmos Год назад +1048

    4:34, I can try to explain this one (I’m also a noob tho). Basically, quantum mechanics/particle physics says that every type of force is facilitated by a corresponding particle. (Light has photons, electricity has electrons, etc.) And this works for every single force, except gravity. If you try to fit “gravitons” into the established model, tiny balls of gravity interacting with each other on such a small scale would create tiny black holes everywhere. And that isn’t happening, so…
    String theory proposes that every particle is actually a vibrating string, and a graviton would be a string connected end-to-end in a loop. This effectively makes gravitons less dense, since it’s not a solid uniform shape anymore. And this apparently makes the math work out really well, and then you don’t get tiny black holes everywhere, which is cool. That’s how String Theory ties quantum mechanics and Einstein’s gravity together.

      I would have to make a addition: Quantum mechanics is actually the description of the behavior of particles (doesn't describe what it is). Particles behave as a "wave" (in that we cannot deduce its position, only the probability of its position, which, likewise, its movement, so more specifically, its a probability wave). Check out the double slit experiment. Its the most basic way to visually understand quantum mechanics.
      In easier terms, relativity is deterministic, quantum theory is probabilistic. The reason why its hard to combine is because of the inherent contradictory nature of these aspects.
      String theory proposes a description of gravitons can can fit in with both general relativity and still matches quantum theory. How....
      Most of it is a bunch of math (including probabilities) of course. Its literally using math math to explain math. There is no actual easy way to explain it. I mean, can you even imagine 11 dimensions? On paper, its just 11 variables. In reality its ??? And this isn't even including the different mathematical interpretations of string theory which are explained differently.

    I think the main idea is the string vibrate like a guitar a string. The different "notes" are different vibration speeds/frequencies. Roughly the "notes" are what make up quantum forces in quantum science. You can also combine notes to make larger "chords" which just translates to bigger quantum particles. It's been a while since I've studied this so take this as just a rough idea.

  • @SuperStingray
    @SuperStingray Год назад +1

    Honestly one of the best layman explanations I've seen on string theory. As for the problem that string theory solves, quantum mechanics relies on a technique called "renormalization", which lets you make a meaningful prediction by pruning away probabilities that don't really affect the final outcome, kind of like how we can ignore the possibility of a coin landing on its side when we say a coin toss is 50-50. With gravity, at least the way general relativity describes it, you can't really use that technique without getting a meaningless result, i.e. dividing by zero. String theory is enticing because it has the benefits of describing quantum mechanics as we already understand it while providing a "workaround" for gravity. The hard part, and why a lot of scientists see it as black magic, is that we don't really have a good way to test for it, and on top of that we don't really know what we'd be testing *for*, as there is like 10 to the 500th power different ways string theory could "exist."

    • @jordanious7711
      @jordanious7711 Год назад

      Testing would be great I dont think it's required to be "proven" to push our understanding of physics further. Being theoretical (for string theory at least) is perfectly acceptable.. At the end of the day it's the unknown that spurs people on to doing great things, having theories that are coveted in mystery, excitement and possibility is going to be what encourages people to think outside of the box and push our current understanding of already established theories.\
      People forget, but anything we learn about string theory whether it's correct or not will help drive understanding of relativity, etc also. It's never a dead end.
