Rex reminds me of so many of the "cool dudes" I remember growing up in the late 80's. my friends and I riding our bicycles through the neighborhood you'd see lots of guys who look like Rex working on their cars in the driveway, a boombox playing the radio real loud, a cooler full of beers. Sometimes it'd just be one guy, sometime it'd be him and his buddies, but you'd see these guys everywhere. It's one of the strongest childhood memories I have actually. Only a lot of them had rat tails or full on mullets, and it was back when fanny packs were in style as well as super bright colored clothing and sneakers.

It's kinda crazy how perfectly this movie captures a certain atmosphere. Anyone who watches it knows exactly what I mean.. it's really quite impressive, and that's not even including the fact that virtually every line is quotable. Consider: half of the stuff in the movie is anachronistic (like a Trapper Keeper or a mix tape), so it's some strange blend of adult and child life experiences that borrows anything it wants from a 30-year repository of cultural elements.
This "atmosphere" or "aura" that results is like a conceptual understanding that many viewers already have about the characters' lives, independent of their own specific experiences, location, or age. It's all somehow foreign and familiar at the same time, in a way that mesmerizes. In the most absurd way, it's all pretty easy to relate to. Even the antagonistic characters retain some relatability-like the scoffing popular kid who you want to both punch and laugh with at the same time.

In most movies, even comedies, they choose someone who's at least average-looking in an extraordinary setting or extraordinary circumstances to show how silly it all is. This entire movie may as well take place in a dying mini-mall where everything was made in the 80s and 90s, which the movie acknowledges as being hilarious in and of itself.
