Just picked up a whole bunch of Jane Austen classics, including Northanger Abbey, and came across this video at the right time! I don’t want to just read the classics because they’re classics, I want to understand what they’re saying, what they’re commenting on etc. Thank you so much for this video! Loved this! And I look forward to picking up on some elements I skimmed over on my first read and embracing them the next time round!

I think people should use their own free will to read whatever the heck they want to read. There are no rules as to how many pages someone reads or for example if a 50 year old wants to read a dang picture book that you would find in the kids section. To me that isn’t weird or silly, yes it’s definitely not the normal typical situation you might see everyday. But sometimes it does happen. Also, some ppl didn’t get the chance to read as a kid and maybe they just want to try new things. Anyone can gain something out of what they are reading and if they decide to read it a few years later or more they might have a different perspective on it. I wonder if Jane Austen likes horror novels,…or not..Yes, I feel like woman still get discredited for a lot of the things they do till this day. I mean back then it was always about being at home and cleaning, and cooking, and taking care of everything in the house and never about fulfilling your dreams and what you’re most passionate about. If you work any job nowadays as a woman you will generally get paid way less than a man even if you have the same degree or experience. It’s ridiculous tbh. One of my favorite poets Emily Dickinson had a mental illness and idk I just adored her work and she seems like a very down to earth type of person as well as Jane Austen of course. But I want to say she did what she wanted to do and what she was most passionate about. I think her dad was against it. OMG IM DYING OF LAUGHTER AT 5:26 😂😂😂I would give Mr. Thorpe a little piece of my mind lol😩😂 6:13 *pow pow pow* 💥 maybe Mr. Thorpe is just mentally challenged or maybe he is just mentally insane. I mean I guess he could be both…🤷🏼‍♀️lol Catherine is all like,..I didn’t read the entire book not because I wasn’t enjoying it, but because I like to have my own conclusion as to how it ends. I would be like girl what is the point in even starting the novel if you’re not even going to finish it. I can understand if you just hated it and you wanted to dnf it, but if you’re going to tell the whole neighborhood that you liked the novel then you should have at least finished it🤦🏼‍♀️I can understand why that man got annoyed with her tbh😩😂she’s freaking out over something that isn’t even there. I cannot🙅🏼‍♀️she isn’t really naive she’s just a bit dumb. But I will give her this, like you said compare her to Eleanor at least she knows how to stand up for herself and doesn’t rely on a man to take care of it for her. She understood the assignment👌🏻I def want to pick this up after hearing what you had to say! I think there’s also a movie about it to, if I’m not mistaken.

I feel like the themes of this book can also be seen in our today. Like, all the hyped books. Someone says "this" book is the best thing ever and then everyone is saying the same thing whether or not they've actually read it or not. Mostly they haven't read it before hyping it up. And then you can follow the trail of lemmings... is the book actually the best thing ever or are we just following along what everyone else says and then we might be too afraid to say no actually this books sucks. But if it actually is good, can we bring a new point to it?

Can we consider "Northanger Abbey" one of the earliest examples of metafiction? While I am not ashamed to admit that I've never read this book, I have heard a lot about it. If we agree upon the fact that it ridicules or mocks a Gothic novel, then surely it's "fiction about fiction".
