Thanks Merrill for sharing your wealth of metal detecting knowledge with us. Your passion for teaching especially shined through in this video. I'm sure glad that the equinox is your favorite detector, as it is my machine of choice to swing. I can truly say that your videos have made me a better detectorist with the equinox. Your videos and your videos alone played a major part in me buying an equinox. So if your wondering if anyone out there is paying attention to what you are not only saying but teaching, we are. My sincerest thanks to you friend!!!

Thank you for that HUGE compliment Greg! That investment will pay dividends very quickly. I don’t claim to be a master with Whites detectors (although I have owned a Beach Hunter 300 for about 7 years) but you will start noticing a clarity that lacks in other detectors. The Equinox is the detector that changed the game. It’s ability to reach between targets and separate in crowded areas is second to none!

Another great video Merrill, lots of great advice! Two things I would point out to you is, using an external battery pack may cause damage if you get it wet. Secondly, if you return to the same spot multiple times, and dig every single signal, the much deeper targets can be had; it's hard work, but I've seen your detecting efforts, and you can do it!

I got the BH used for $50 and if it says there’s a quarter it’s almost always right on, but it misses so many targets. Doesn’t work in wet sand but it paid for the nox 600 in park change and silver rings.

As a famous proverb goes, it's in the way that you use it (also a very famous song by Eric Clapton)! Turning the metal detector on it's side is genius! On my rather basic Teknetics Delta 4000 I've discovered that turning up the sensitivity level to just below the maximum setting really helps in finding targets, then I gradually turn it down to find out if it's worth digging.

I get the AI reference: I use the Etrac in only 2 tones (BIG NO NO/ taboo/ sacrilege ) because I trust the machine's software to give me a repeatable numerical equivalent even if the set of numbers move. That is a slow technique at first but becomes second nature. I have done really well in hunted out public areas this way. On the other hand you can swing the EQX 800 super fast: it's the fastest multi Minelab detector ever.

Hi Merrill! Don't ever change! Your silliness is great!
I am a novice, and am wanting to get back into the hobby. I have used a few low end detectors in the past. I would be hunting for relics, coins, silver, and if luck serves a gold ring here and there.
I am on the fence about getting a Nox 600 or 800. It would be nice if the 800 was cheaper and didn't come with items I will probably never use.
I have read about the differences (600 vs 800) of not being able to use different frequencies, but not sure how this would affect the search.
My question is: Just the detectors, no extras, with your experiences, what does the 800 bring to the table that the 600 doesn't and how will this affect detecting?
Thanks! Keep up the great videos!

    • @MetalDetectingNYC
      @MetalDetectingNYC  3 года назад +1

Hi Allen, New York ONLY has trashy parks. I cherry pick at these to see what deep signals bring me. If it is anything good, believe it or not, it is sometimes worth removing all of or most of the trash. Magnetic rakes help a lot with bottle caps on the surface. Sometimes when you remove the upper layer of a good site, virgin ground is revealed. Its happened many times to me before. There is no way around trash other than to remove it. You can try changing angles on your detector but the best way is always to remove it. Learn the difference of the sounds of a bottle cap vs a coin and that will help.

I heard Coiltek may be producing a new coil for the Equinox at some point. I really think you need to pickup a CTX 3030 at some point (a good used one can save you lots of money too). Like others say below, multiple simultaneous frequency machines are not new to the game (Fisher CZ3D, Whites Spectra V3I, Minelab E-Trac, Minelab CTX 3030, all have it). One of the nice items that is included with the 800 is that WM08 module (and the wireless headphones).

My old CZ21 (which i own 3 of) in ID mode has 3 tones - low unlike the minelab is iron - mid can be good or bad =
pulltab, nickel, small gold ring - high tone is coins, lead ,copper brass silver and gold
i have found gold rings under pill of nails, gold rings under multiple bottle caps - it will "burp" =
low tones and then "bink" high tones that are under junk
i hunt in all metal but if i get a loaded trashy area - will click over to ID to see if there are goodies under the junk - hunting in all metal is not for all though
my CZ21 pulls good stuff close to 2ft in all metal - i pull musketballs and civil war minie balls
down 2ft range on land where others have hammered - CZ21's loves lead
Ive learned my machine well - not many out there that use it like i do

The difference between the 600 and 800 is $300. I have a Vanquish 440 and absolutely LOVE it. But from the beginning, I planned to buy an Equinox after I proved to myself that I would be out there enough to justify it. Now that the time has come to make that decision and I'm torn because I do love the Vanquish so much. It's not better than a Nox, obviously, and it's not totally waterproof, but am I going to need that? I'm old. Our waves on the east coast of Florida are wicked. How much will I actually want to detect in the water? Dropping it when I'm just barely in the water would be my only reason to need fully waterproof. Can you tell I'm just rambling through my quandary? LOL If you have anything to add, I'd absolutely LOVE to hear it. I can afford to buy any of the Minelab machines...but the question is "should I?" You're one of my favorites on RUclips and I would love to hear your thoughts...especially if you've bought and tested a Vanquish by now. Thanks and keep up the awesome videos.

    My experiences.
Try Park 1 on dry top of beach. Set recovery 3 or below. Park 1 & 2 give greatest depth other than Gold.
Learn to distinguish crown bottle caps by iron grunt as the coil approaches.
On areas of sparse signals use Gold setting, it is deep. Beach 1 on wet sand with lowest recovery like 3 or 2. I get many coins using park 1. I have had 50 coins per session many times where others get 10 at most. But I am a beach boy. The Nox does go deeper than the Deus and the AT pro generally. All detectors lose depth on land due to mineralised soil.

The Minelab Etrac is the best detector I have ever used even with weight and speed issues (have used it for 7 years). I have had the Equinox 800 for almost 2 years now. I think success has a lot has to do with location (you have a huge amount of public areas) I'd go crazy digging 20 clad quarters though! I think I would lose my impetus for the old stuff, having to do that. One of the main things missing for me with the Equinox is you can't adjust the Gain. Adjusting that on the Etrac gives you really good audio depth. Comes in really handy for deeper older targets if you are in the right area. I've watched your stuff off and on for a year: great finds! Love your enthusiasm for the hunt!

Great video Merrill, maybe just beginners luck with the E800 but went over some ground that I literally pounded with a Garrett Ace 400i last year.My result was a Goerge 111 cartwheel penny(32/33 I'd,how did I miss that?) and an Edward the 7th penny(19) and a George 6th thrupenny bit.It was like the coins were growing like potatoes,seasonal;-).Wales UK.

@@MetalDetectingNYC Sorry I'm distracted and watching one of your videos LOL. It was a new equinox 800. I took it out about 4 times in 2 weeks, battery recharged once then it wouldn't recharge anymore. They were nice enough to replace it, even sent me a prepaid label due to it's age. I got a little concerned with their second message though telling me that because of the virus it was going to take longer to repair it but that didn't turn out to be the case. I called it in on 9/21, they got it on 9/23 and they replaced battery on 9/24. I got it back yesterday. So basically it was gone 7 days total.

Thank you for this video Merrill. I am going to buy my first detector in the next couple of months and the Equinox 800 is one I am considering. Some say I should buy a more entry level detector. I am in my 70s and quite frankly I am looking at my years of life remaining and they probably are not that many. I love your videos. Love the rewards you provide yourself with unlocking Taco Bell, Haagen Daz, Sushi, etc. Great humor and well received. Blessings to you.

All the respect in the world for your reasoning and subsequent viewpoint.
Why not get the tool you feel you will eventually graduate to? It can be set up for a beginner and gradually opened up as you learn. It's like getting your first driver's license but driving a Porsche. Stay in 3rd gear when you start and shift up as you learn. A lot of the advice for beginner models is given because most people' won't carry on with the hobby. At this point you've learned yourself well enough to know you will.
      Happy hunting!

@@syzygysyzygy8332 Yes indeed. I remember at 18 I bought my first car. It was a stick shift and I never drove one before. I so loved that car. I learned to shift gears and operate a clutch is about 30 minutes. I then needed a couple of weeks of driving it before I felt proficient in driving this stick shift car. Yes, I agree with your reasoning. I believe my purchase with be the Equinox 800. As a beginner I will first be lousy, then I will be bad, average, good, and very good. The learning experience is not a smooth experience but it is the way we learn. I can use the Equinox as a beginner and learn new things as I grow and be more proficient in metal detecting. Thank you for your comment.
