What triggers the Register request though? Does it automatically send a register request to the ims pcscf on boot up of the phone? When the registeration time expires, does it automatically try to register again?

Yes, at the time of boot mobile performs both types of registrations - LTE registration and IMS registration.
Yes, once registration time expires, mobile renews its registration status by performing registration again.
