In terms of not changing crucial dialogue or characterization the OG Dragon Ball is the least offensive in that regard. The Z and GT dubs suffer more from that. I would definitely suggest Kai for a more accurate dub. Though, I do say Z has some great filler (mostly the Saiyan arc).
In general the dub is good...enough. it makes sense with the target audience at the time in america. Which was crucial for birthing nerd culture in the west. But still isnt always the most accurate
The biggest difference with this episode in Japanese, Ulong sounds like an adult in English, but a child in Japanese, which dramatically alters the tone of his crimes.
Honestly it makes it even funnier, like them changing his voice to a cholo/Mexican accent for the bull XD I love dubs that can have fun with a great show like this!
Since, they dubbed Z first here they just reused the same VA that voiced Oolong as an adult. I personally do like his English VA, but understand why it wouldn’t fit in this point of the story.

The humor in og dragon ball is great, the Japanese subtitles are more accurate but the voices are a bit too screechy for me. Looking forward to episodes 16+ things really pick up but hope you continue enjoying the ride
I completely forgot how ecchi early Dragonball was xD I mean, I do remember a few scenes here and there (like her showing her "panties" last episode or some future stuff), but oh boi, there were a lot more of those scenes that I completely forgot xD
The fact that Oolong is dressed as a communist is hilarious imo...😂 Btw, in the original Japanese dub, the reason why Bulma opened up her jacket was because Oolong asked her about the size of her breasts. She answered 85. And then he started thinking very.. ah.. creative thoughts. XD
The thing about translations from Japanese is that back then people in the West didn't quite understand that anime and manga were just a medium and the contents could be for kids or definitely not for kids because western animation was always for kids. So this kind of show that is written for teenagers often included things that children shouldn't be watching and that led to some things the characters said being inappropriate and the translated dialogue saying something completely different in order to pretend that what you just saw happen was not actually a joke related to sex or something like that, when it's pretty obvious it was and the dubbed dialogue is not saying what they actually said. That kind of thing, as well as some censorship regarding some scenes due to sex or violence, is probably what people are telling you about. So far this dub hasn't done anything too noticeable, just like you said.
Umm…. There’s plenty of Western animation that’s not for kids. And not just Adult Swim, South Park, or Seth McFarlane’s stuff. Even Looney Tunes and Mickey Mouse were originally targeted toward adults. The issue, though, is that it’s assumed in the West that cartoons are for kids (Saturday Morning cartoons were definitely targeted toward kids). But animation has always been for a range of audiences. Honestly, part of why Goku can get away with being so dumb and touching everyone below the belt is because it’s animated.

The reson the jokes in dragon ball are like this is because gag jokes and dirty jokes were pretty common back then. I grew up watching this in Mexico in the late 80s on normal TV channels.
You are doing what 75% of english speaking fans of Dragon Ball doesn't do, that is not watching litterally the original series. Also is crazy how this show is evolving through the chapters, is TOTALLY different from this to the latest content
It also helps with tone of GT and Super. Z got overly serious around the battle with frieza and the androids + cell that people mistake the series for being more serious than it really is. Also GT requires the original music. Its still only like a 69 percent. A... +D. Pass the class but mom and dad are grounding you. But the music we got in america takes it to like a 64. It actively makes the show worse.
There a quite a bit changes between dubbed and subbed. A few examples are; when Goku throws the powerpole at Bulma to save her from falling and she ends up hanging on the rockside, she says "looks like i'm peeing after all" (sub), instead of "Goku, i'm in a bit of a pickle here" (dub) or something similar. Or when Roshi want to give Goku a gift for helping Turtle, instead of calling for the Flying Carpet (dub) he yells for The Flaming Phoenix in the subbed one, after which Turtle tells him Roshi gave it expired bird food and it died. And many more little changes in the last few episodes alone. And many more to come, none that really affect the story though.
Changing the context of some jokes is one thing. I think where dubs (especially older ones) annoy people is when they change crucial dialogue and intent in regards to the plot and characters. That can be damaging. I don’t think the OG Dragon Ball does that to its credit.

I've some other reactions to the dub (think it's the same) and while visual seems mostly intact, some dialogue (maybe more tense at times) is replaced with light-hearted, silly jokes. And yes, stuff like puns is mega tough to get acros (I know from experience) and cultural references are also not easy. The manga run I have is kinda diligent with adding annotations at the bottom or side of the pages to provide context if needed, but that's the nature of the medium that it makes it easier to do so.
The English is great, you know how people get about the topic. Most modern dubs really don't change mush from the subs but older shows like dragonball do have a lot of changes they made for the dub. That being said though, The dub is going to be a lot better for you because it carries over much better into dragonball z. Do whatever you would rather do, but watching your channel for a while im pretty confident you'll be happy with the dub.
Suzy don't listen to people telling you to watch the original your channel is special for being the only dubbed reactor and if they cant see that that's their problem
In this case the changes are not slight translation problems, they totally changed almost all sentences. I guess they wanted it to be more suited for young american audience.
But the meanings are not changed so ultimately it's not a big deal. The exact same message is portrayed. Also just because you read something in sub doesn't mean that's the 100% official exact translation. Translations are weird things. They're a bit subjective sometimes too, because certain words may have many equivalencies, certain phrases may also have many equivalencies. It's like saying, "Man, that was good food!" or saying, "Dude, that was awesome food." Different words, different sentence, exact same meaning.
Hey, in Dragonball Z (Episode 119 I believe it starts)they have censored a lot in the modern Dragon Ball Z Kai, I recommend watching the old show with the Japanese music and English dub. It has blood, whilst the new dub has no blood - it makes a big difference.
When I was a kid I read the entire manga on paper. Akira Toryama is a legend. It's literally the greatest Manga/Anime in history. The great character arcs make you cry in the end. And the subtle political incorrect-ness (that would be impossible today) is the cherry on top.
As I’m a huge fan of Akira Toriyama, I love to see you enjoy the show. Since I grew up watching DB and DBZ in Japan, I myself enjoy watching in English😊
Bulma is what we here in the States would call 'for the streets', if you get what I mean ;) This show is a riot! With this, then DBZ, (and likely Super+movies) you have content to last you for a long time, and and very dedicated audience too!
This is the first time I noticed that Sherman Priest has the same accent as Ulong, just less extreme. I'm not use to that level of attention to detail in this show. :)
just wanna throw it out there, i always found oolong’s kidnapping of the girls extra creepy because he’s presented as an adult in the english dub, but i recently found out that he’s a kid in the original japanese and that takes the edge off the kidnapping a bit
No podría decir si cambia mucho del japonés al inglés porque es la primera vez que veo dragon ball en inglés pero como alguien que ya lo ha visto en japonés, en español latino y en castellano puedo decir que hasta ahora no me ha parecido un mal doblaje, si es cierto que algunas cosas cambian como que el maestro roshi en inglés dice querer regalarles una alfombra mágica mientras que en latino (no recuerdo si en los otros dos también) lo que quiere es darles la inmortalidad con ayuda del ave inmortal (que por cierto la tortuga dice que el ave inmortal murió hace tiempo xD) pero en resumen creo que si cambia algo a de ser por la traducción en su mayoría así que no hay problema si es en inglés o en japonés. Puedes ver dragon ball en cualquiera de los dos que lo disfrutarás igual👍 o puedes hacer lo que hice yo y verlo en tu idioma, volver a verlo después en el idioma original y otra vez en tu idioma sólo para recordar viejos tiempos 😁. Pd: if you ask me, I would like you to keep watching it in English, cause like I said before, this would be my first time watching it in English so it would be like watch the show for the first time. Dub is really good for DB and DBZ.... the jokes and dialogue are fine in English, they did a really good job, so no worries. DB has a lot of jokes and cheekiness, enjoy. xD
I don't know if it's this kind of content being the norm so much as it's Toriyama's style, at least as far as I can tell. Not that it was necessarily all that unusual to find this kind of humor in manga and anime. But it seems Toriyama liked to do it a _lot._ You can see this even more strongly in another of his works, _Dr. Slump,_ about a robot made to resemble a little girl, Arale, which is a near-constant stream of humor based on her outwardly human appearance juxtaposed with her doing utterly ridiculous (and often humanly impossible) things out of total ignorance of (what we consider) social norms, as well as the equally oddball rest of the cast.
Cool, please continue, Dragon Ball is the begining of the story and it's gonna set a good background for DBZ, but more important, is funny! What people meant with the english dub, is that some things are changed and don't even keep an equivalent meaning, specially in DBZ I guess, that's why is better watch it in japanese with a good english sub.

Please watch in english only it's better then japanese dragon ball all series watch in english dub dragon ball, Z, Super the screams roars and legendary dialogues are in english there are some iconic dialogues in japanese too but the screams and roars hit so hard in english it gives goosebumps 😅

The dub is perfectly fine. The original Japanese dub is more raunchy at times but it’s still a very good dub.

Actually Dragon Ball OG is actually way more faithful to the Japanese script. They didn't censor anything, left all the jokes.

オリジナルこそベストなのは変わらないけど、文化も違えば全く同じ表現も無かったりするし、100%オリジナルのまま翻訳されるのは難しいですね。
日本でも異国の作品がおかしな翻訳をされて世に流れている事がありますし。
ネタバレはやめてほしいのと、オリジナルと翻訳で違いがあれば教えてほしいというスージーの訴えはとてもスマート。

Cool, please continue, Dragon Ball is the begining of the story and it's gonna set a good background for DBZ, but more important, is funny! What people meant with the english dub, is that some things are changed and don't even keep an equivalent meaning, specially in DBZ I guess, that's why is better watch it in japanese with a good english sub.

Please watch in english only it's better then japanese dragon ball all series watch in english dub dragon ball, Z, Super the screams roars and legendary dialogues are in english there are some iconic dialogues in japanese too but the screams and roars hit so hard in english it gives goosebumps 😅
