  • 4 Trains in an hour at “Gooney’s Crossing” in Palmyra NY! Caught 4 mixed freights passing through, including a meet. Saw quite a few “Cryo-Trans” cars which use liquid carbon dioxide for refrigeration. These are something I don’t usually see in south-central PA. The motive power included: ET44AH, ES44AH (DPU), AC4400CW, and ES40DC. For years, Gooney’s Crossing was prone to fatal accidents at the crossing. The town of Palmyra petitioned the New York Central in 1948 to extend the distance that the crossing lights would activate. Here is what the Resolution said:
Resolved that the Town Board enter a protest with the NY Central Railroad Company concerning the accident on Saturday, March 13, 1948, in which two people were killed and a third injured at Gooney’s Crossing of the NY Central Railroad, located about two miles north of the Village of Palmyra. The Town Board recommends the extension of the signal distance at the present time in force on the railroad crossing, wherein the present distance from the start of the signaling point is only 3500 feet or an elapse of thirty to thirty-five seconds for a fast train to arrive at the crossing and giving the driver of an automobile a short time to clear the crossing. The condition of the crossing being so rough and bumpy, the driver of the automobile proceeds at a very slow rate of speed. Upon vote of the Town Board, the resolution was unanimously carried. A copy of the above resolution was ordered sent to the Syracuse Division, Supervisor of Maintenance and to O. R. Judson of the Claim Department of Rochester, NY, File #700.
