Bob Gray, a friend of Wellers plays piano on this demo that was recorded at Bob Potters studio at Frimley Green, Surrey. He was trying out as a possible 4th member of the Jam but things didnt work out and he went on to be a TV magician of some repute in Canada I think. The song is at least partly about Steve Brookes, former band member and best friend of weller who werent on the best of terms when this was written.
Maybe my favorite Jam track - great to hear it before it fully evolved. Interesting how it's full of so many more Motown-y homage moments than the final version, when they made it their own. Thanks so much for posting this.
absolutely africkenmMAZING! So damned cool! This was always my favorite song from their first album and this version is so damned sexy! So much soul and so Otis! Thank you so much for putting this up! I'm all amped up now to go play it!!!!
I like this version as much as the studio version from In the City LP. Ive always thought this was a cover of an obsure soul record, but its a Weller composition. I bought In The City LP in about 86 when about 12 and my mate got Modern World LP at same time in sale at Woolworths. We copied each other LP on to tap. I use to think I got bum deal but In The City LP is way better.

I dont know if its as good as the ITC version, class regardless.
Anche per me questa era la migliore di In the city.
dig the pseudo-Otis Redding vocalisms
The falsetto is hilarious, one of my fave Jam songs from my fav Jam album
