How to change spare Wheel on Land Rover Defender 2020 - Tool locations / jacking points etc

- In this video we make sure we know where the tools are and the correct process for changing the spare wheel on our Land Rover Defender 2020. We got Tyler to do this as had not changed a spare wheel before or used a scissor jack so that it should be a good guide for a novice.
Safety tip:
On removing the punctured wheel it is good safety practice to temporarily slide it half under the side of the car
just in case of a jack failure until the replacement wheel is fitted.
Another great infovid
I am blue in the face in repeating myself ad nauseam ( Wife, Daughter...) that this should be the first thing everyone should do with a new car. Well done Tyler! you are now in the 1% percentile of the population:)
Love the videos so much and how you do things exactly the way most of us would in the real world, not editing out mistakes , but showing how mistakes can and will be made. Much better than the "sterile" videos of people with experience going from beginning to end with everything perfect . It's all very good watching those type of "how to" videos, but there are pitfalls for people who have little or no experience of even basic stuff - like changing a spare wheel. I remember trying to pull the wheel brace up to loosen the wheel nuts on my first Land Rover 30 odd years ago and nearly giving myself a hernia - until someone pointed out that pushing down and using gravity was the way to go. Simple things like this really do help a complete novice.
That alignment tool - what a great piece of kit. As others have stated, please get these in stock, Simon.
I've just ordered the airbag removal tools from you the other day. I bought a 2013 facelift steering wheel last year , plus a conversion for the switchgear so it can be fitted to a 2007 model.Bloody expensive ! It's been sat up the shed for ages. I've finally decided to fit it. I saw your airbag removal video ages ago and as I'm really bored in lockdown, finally decided to do the job. Can't wait for the tools to arrive.
Regards.
Ian
This is a thing everyone that is going to drive the vehicle should do before ever using the vehicle, if only to familiarise yourself with where the tools are. The extended wheel stud is a thing I have made up for the past 20 years for all of my vehicles, they are essential for the awful modern car wheel bolt type as you cannot locate the hole to insert the wheel bolt, with a slave stud it makes the job easy, not so bad with the proper wheel studs on a Land Rover of course, but for the spare it is very useful, I doubt that few females would be able to lift the spare off the back door though, (or I would not like to meet them on a dark night if they could). It is good that you were able to lift the vehicle enough with the jack, given that you were parked a lot higher that the road under your jacking point! Thanks for posting , stay safe! Chris B.
Just a quick one on locking wheel nuts, theyre usually alot weaker than the standard ones so its always worth removing them FIRST so there isnt any additional pressure on them causing it to strip, i usually remove the nut completely before starting on the others
Really liking your videos! Located in the US. Took delivery of my new Defender 11 days ago. Because of you, downloaded new software without a problem, named our car (Clive), and now know where to find the jack and where the lift points are!! Thanks again.
Glad you are enjoying the videos and hope you and Clive have a lot of fun together...
Good video. If you ever get lost. Tyler’s left arm always points towards the north 🤣.
I like the design for locating the jacking point. Nice and clear.
All praise to you , at least your not going off on one at the camera . I bet this car costa bit . . Fair play . Thank you for a very honest account about this beautiful Defender .
Yes have my first wheel problem, rear off side wheel report losing air. Thought it was due to cold temperatures. However its gone down again, so wheel change tomorrow so interesting to see you doing the drills.
I've been watching your videos for long enough....I'm really not wondering about the sardines in the boot! Once upon a time perhaps I would have, but after several hours watching your madcap ways, not any more!
Tip: When removing the wheel remove the lowest nut last and insert this one first, this stops the wheel from tipping before the last nut is removed or after this has been inserted.
Thanks for the pro tip
@@L663 Practice makes perfect! ;)
In Germany we change all 4 wheels 2x per year; Summer > Winter tyres and then Winter > Summer tyres!
steering lock is set automatically when you lock the car, handbrake is applied when you put the transmission to P.
Thanks
But is it disengaged with the back door open? If so poor engineering.
To lock the steering wheel, ensure wheels and steering is dead center, then switch car off and turn steering to the right, past the half way mark ( 6 o clock) and it will lock ( Audible click). to release, pull to right past half way with foot on the brake. start car and release steering and lock is off. I used similar procedure on my Discovery Sport 2018 and it worked well.
I will give this a go later...
The Defender gets a spare wheel for it's retro looks, nearly everything else gets a tin of gunk 🤣
I think Craig has OCD but sadly for me, I agree with having the Land Rover logo straight on the spare wheel, not so sure about valve and locking wheel nut though, especially if it's dark, raining and freezing, all you'd want to do is get the job done and back in the car
Craig does have to have things right which is why all his cars are immaculate... he even re-stitches the interior so all the stitching matches...
That long locator nut is probably to help handling the wheel for both replacing wheel and removal, plus preventing scratch damage to the rear mount ?
New rims are lush!
I think you were too close with the "Keys" for the steering lock to work
For safety purpose, you should always put the wheel you took off underneath the car, as close as possible to the jack, while you put in the spare. In case the jack fails or slips, the car will rest on top of the wheel.
This is good tip....thanks for sharing.
@@L663 np... luv your videos... I´m still hoping you to get success with the Evoque audio upgrade thing. I´ve got a new RR Evoque 2020 and my sound system, although it´s Meridian, It´s not the premium one and I´d like to upgrade it. Keep up the good work. cheers.
Looks like "wheel hangers" or "pins" could be a great Defender accessory for powerful to sell!!!!
Hey, my car was fully jacked when changing wheels and they didn’t set the air suspension to off road. So far (1 week since then) all looks ok but I’m really concerned as the manual says you must set it to off-road mode. Are my concerns on place? What can happen with the car? Thanks a lot. Marek
Could do with a Hexagonal bolt welding into the jack handle lug to facilitate a zip gun wind up
Hi 👋 nice 👍 and new wheel looks much better. Very good
Thanks 🙏
Love the white board
The new alloys look awesome. Keep the videos coming. Very interesting and entertaining.
Thanks, will do!
Nice! I like the alignment post. I need to get one of those...
Hi - a few people have asked for these so i am looking at getting some made.
I found some in the US and ordered them. www.roverparts.com/wheels-tires/wheel-tools/WMAT/
Was wondering if you could tell us part number for the alignment pin would definitely buy a couple for my D3
Keep giving us videos like this, thanks
Great video lads 👍🚘luv the new rims.
Yes they are pretty sweet - thanks for watching to the end.... i dont think many people will have the patience to watch till the end to see the new wheels !
Anybody monitoring this thread know if there's a flat jack point to allow use of a bottle jack? Or are we stuck using the provided jack? Havent seen any bottle jacks with a v 'head' that would work on this...
Another interesting video! Any idea if that 'wheel lining up' device can be bought from LR (or anywhere else) and do you reckon I could use it on my FFRR?
Wonder how many different locking nut patterns there are, and how long before the spares start getting stolen, like those on the Discos.
Great video!
Also, what was the performance message that showed up when you took delivery of the car?
Great video
Did you manage to follow up if there were to be wheel chocks supplied?
If that was me I would be carrying an cordless drill/screw driver with adapter to spin off/on those wheel nuts and if it has enough torque possible use on the jack
Any instructions on how to remove the bracket of the spare? Nice video...
Hi guys love your videos always watch them while your vehicle is lovely and you why don't you spray the hubs as the centre parts always go rusty on new vehicles and it would be so easy to do your homes and breaks while it's nice and new
My apologies using talk to text I meant to say while all the wheel parts are nice and new why not spray then keeping them nice and fresh as especially the centre part of the wheels always seem to rust on new vehicles
hi mate could you tell me the make of tyre on the standard 19" wheel many thanks keep the videos coming
Hi great video 👍🏼 . I have a 2018 Land Rover Discovery v6 super charge. Do you have a video of replacing or the location of the Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid? I’m getting a p0496 code high purge flow. Unfortunately I can’t seem to find it. If you have any suggestions can you please let me know thank you.
Hi - I found this on the parts diagrams

@@L663 Thank you I appreciate you guys
I’m more familiar with the spare tyre’s location, because of the Jeep Wrangler. Full sized spare as well, not the space saver donut.
would be great to see a video about the wheels and what other wheels would fit. Are 18s the smallest size you can fit?
All that info is in the manual. ...
BUT, could you please do a video on how to tow the vehicle if stranded. There is a manual way to get it into neutral, but it's not in the e-handbook!
I do however have a screenshot of the tech manual on how to do it, so if you have an email address I could send it to, I will do so
Yes a lot of stuff we show is in the manual... the tow thing sound interesting...
Like you say the manual refers to it but does not say the exact procedure
www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/document/3E/2020/T19990/38261_en_GBR/proc/G2389895
Nice and easy .....
Why did you not have the landrover on level ground to start with the puts a lot of pressure on the jack to start with
Good question - i wanted to emulate a real world situation...
Australia - O shit mate, we have a flat, cracks open a beer and get on with it.
UK - O no... we have a flat, better get out the risk assessment
them wheel liney up thing have been out years but i could never find one to buy so mr powerful uk whats it called, great vid and the best looking defender ever
fester Adams He will be selling them soon 😏
@@AndyK.1 hope so its a killer lifting 20's up
Very useful tip about cross balancing the valve and the locking wheel nut. On a separate note do you know of the delay in getting the accessories for the Defender. Our Defender has been sat at the dealer for 2 weeks now waiting for the Country Pack and a couple of other options we ordered back in October and the dealer hasn't a clue when they will come so we just have to wait on the JLR parts department getting the back orders sorted.
Yes i have the same issue - i was lucky in that i ordered my car without accessories and then ordered the accessories separately so that i could do fitting videos for them all. I am however still waiting for the accessories to arrive ! so yes this is a big problem for Land Rover... accessories are not available.
Why don’t you take delivery?
My accessories arrived with the dealer on Friday 12th June - expecting car delivery with parts fitted on Wed 17th
Taking the wheel off locking wheel nuts comes off first, tightening wheel locking wheel nut last.
I have to agree that seems logical....then at least if you have a problem with the locking nut you find it first...
Consider a run flat tyre....?
The Stig
Love the stig !
Aligning the air valve with the clock nut does nothing for dynamic wheel balance as wheels are balanced off the car with no wheel nuts fitted.
That’s just an ocd thing gong on.
I mean, it’s night, raining and out in the sticks. Wheel gets swapped ASAP, bugger lining up badges and wheel nuts.
Simon...I was looking at the new Launch Edition today being prepared as a Demonstrator. It is very different to the Disc 5 and will be a success but one accessory needed quickly is a spare wheel cover ...a hard case version rather than soft might be good...left bare. It looks just a bit vulnerable. I think they need a tow bar to look right I’m not sold on the plastic lunch box that fits on the side which thankfully, you haven’t got! Now sardines?....a secret hiding place perhaps??? 🧐🤓🤓😃😃😃😃Richard.
Did the TPMS recognise the new wheels and did the jack cause any marking on the jack points?
Yes good point in my excitement i did not check the TPMS !
They are called 'wheel hangers' or 'pins' which will hold the rim centred on the hub and take the weight while you hand screw in the wheel bolts. Laser have a 5-piece set (6483) including the most common sizes although they are for hubs without studs so won't fit the Defender: www.machinemart.co.uk/p/laser-6483-5-piece-wheel-hanger-set/ but these are quite expensive. You can get a plastic one from VW which does the job but note they call them 'tommy bars': www.partshaus.co.uk/collections/audi-accessories/products/vw-audi-skoda-seat-tommy-bar-disc-and-wheel-alignment-tool-893012223
How in heaven's name didn't they realise the open tailgate would obscure the right hazard lights! Should have mounted those small lights high up the pillar next to the rear window.
lefty loosey righty tighty
Are the AT3 any noisier?
You're doubled parked my friend ;)
Its a private road..
You are tying to get the YT money in. 😂. Hoping this will bring the pennies in for a few decades.
I do put adverts on RUclips and yes this has helped with my purchase of the new Defender. I did not have adverts on and RUclips was deranking my videos so i tried adding adverts and this increased the video views...so now i put the videos up with no adverts so that subscribers can see them advert free and then add adverts after the first 1000 views or so... I was contemplating doing a video showing the view stats etc... its pretty much public info anyway...
I like the original wheels better but the new ones will make it stand out from the rest.
Does Tyler require constant micro managing I wonder? Lol!
infuriating lol
What is that tool at 4:12? Anybody know ?
This is the wheel alignment peg - it should come as standard with the new Defender.
we sell it one our website
www.powerfuluk.com/vehicles/land-rover/new-defender/wheels-accessories.html
That jack would be a pain on soft uneven ground
I wonder if they're still Hi-lift jack friendly?
Tell Tattooed Tyler to pull UP on the Wheelbrace, not down.
What a pain in the arse is the parking brake placement.
Some people don’t read, just watch.... i.e. show people how to nip up the nuts once you’ve dropped the jack, cos you showed every other process apart from the most important one... just saying !
Observed the issue with drivers side rear lights at Defender launch. Factory personnel didn't seem bothered. Why weren't they carried over to edge of opened door? How did the vehicle pass safety standards? Poor validation under TS16949.
I WOULD BE PHONE AA RAC
righty-tighty, lefty- lousy
I'd prefer to delete the entire thing.
sardines 🤮😷
Most painful video to date wow.
Was a great video
Thankfully this is only a demonstration and not done in a real situation on any road in the rain or snow! A bit too much faffing about, worrying, time wasting and messing, just get on with it if you get a puncture.
Why would anyone buy that car. Can you option the defender with a tow truck or maybe a sat phone.
Stupid comment
how not to change a wheel
Harsh... but fair...
