Guys - THIS PEDAL IS VOICED TO RUN INTO THE PREAMP OF AN AMP. NOT into the fx return. Please just trust me on this! It is not a dedicated preamp. It is a distortion box designed to be used like 99% of distortion boxes that have ever been created, into the front end of an amplifier. Thanks- The Management
You're not alone :) But the only problem with Pete and his demos is that he makes literally everything sound so frickin' great that he single-handedly has caused major wallet damage for legions of players. Including me. lolz And yes, this Soldano pedal is so up my alley and I must get my hands on one and try for myself.
@@joesatchton212 It does sound great. A little steep, but good pedals demand that price. But, this sounds every bit as good (probably better) than the SLO mini head, and without having to be tied to an amp with no clean channel.
I have often wondered when people such as yourself go out on the road as a " hired gun " so to speak to bring your abilities and talents to bear, but I well imagine have to hold back in so many ways.....as I listen to your music and I get to hear your musical identity .... I am just blown away with your phrasing and how you structure tone... you are a musicians " MUSICIAN " keep on keeping on and I will continue to be inspired .
Thanks man! The sidemen thing is kind of like being an actor. You just get into the role. And do justice to the music. When you do your thing you can do whatever you want!
I would agree,Pete can make a ragged, cheap, wore out amp sound like a Germino 50 watt combo or head and cab. It's basically a Plexi with a little extra.
So glad I bought this pedal. I have a first production run tube screamer, immediately knew it was special, but could not imagine what a legend it would become. This SLO gives me the same feeling that original TS did, there is nothing like it that I know of, it's special. Experience tells me it will go down in history just like the TS.
Me too. I boost it with a tube powered Blackstar dept- 10 pedal via Randall 100w and 4x12 cab and it gets articulate as hell (lot more response than the the amp slo itself), still retaining the Soldano sound, with warmth of the tube boost. . And sings like nothing else. Gain on 7 o'clock. .
I need another overdrive/distortion pedal like I need a hole in the head, but damn this sounds sooooo good. Excellent demo Pete, best one I've watched so far! Awesome.
EXACTLY what you did there is exactly what I wanted to hear, an A/B with the pedal and the real deal! It seems to get super close to the sound, I feel like the amp gives a “little” more but the sound from the pedal is KILLER. gonna have to try it out w my Friedman! 😤
That sounds so close and also/most importantly… manageable volume wise. I had an SLO some years ago and it was absolutely incredible. Problem was that in order to be in the “zone”, that master had to be at 1:00. Even with the gain low it is ridiculous loud at that master setting. I had more beef than our bassist. I wish I could have afforded to keep things I was not using a lot. It was a glorious sounding amp. That pedal delivers the character.
Amp sounds like it has more "air" or open sound and the pedal is a little more muted. If I didn't hear them A/B'd I wouldn't know the difference. Great demo Pete.
WOW. So many great pedals... Amps in a box and this one does not disappoint. I have pedal paralysis 😳. It sounds so gnarly crunchy good!! The A/B comparison was very interesting. It definitely has the characteristics of the Big brother amp. It just had a little bit more low mids. Great demo Pete!!
Man, I can tell you from experience having an SLO, they are epic but the sweet spot where they do the “thing” is with the master on 6 to 7………..way way way to loud. Being able to get there with a pedal is a great option!!!!! Well done MR. Mike Soldano and well done Mr. Pete Thorn!!!!!!!!!!
My slo pedal arrived. Did a test of it, result great pedal low to high gain smooth. Good tonal control ,matches my amp well as over drive chanell with out changeing the clean tone.
The sound at 5:20 really is the vibe Pete. Great demo. I would say that they seemed to want to get plenty of bass in the pedal. You dialled it back to 3 for the sound above and that is the Poundcake sound I remember. 😀🎸
My buddy Dan (who’s since passed, RIP dude 🤙) owned a SLO100 back in the day. This was during high school when I didn’t know there was a world beyond Mesa. I thought the rectoverb (I’d saved up for all summer) was the best amp on planet earth and in fairness, that amp was BEAUTIFUL. But the SLO100 was on another level. That thick, midrange beauty that saturated the room…the SLO was the amplifier that opened up the world of boutique amplifiers to 18-year-old me back in 2002.
Seriously what person in their right mind would put this little beauty in an effects loop? Pete I agree with the comment of your being one of the best youtube pedal, amp, effects, guitars, pickups whatever it is when Mr Thorn plays and speaks we listen good. You give us every note with clarity and that's brilliant it inspires us to become more and more creative as guitarists, creating mood and sounds that move and groove people. You've had a busy year mate that's for sure, just gets better and better. Cheers
This pedal sound PHENOMENAL!!! I have one sitting right here ...next to my SLO and it's mind blowing. We all know that the best way to run an OD pedal is to run it in front of an amp that is slightly breaking up. This pedal does a marvelous job with that configuration but it also does an amazing job into a crystal clear amp. How? Like seriously, electronically how is this done? ...and why doesn't it work that way with other pedals?
I think the pedal into your amp sounded better than the real thing…….keep using the PT15 too! That has become my main amp for work and everything I do….thanks for helping make great stuff for us working players
Finally got my hands on this pedal from a buddy, and it's like every marshall sound you could ever want. Does the lower, medium, and high gain stuff with aplomb! One of the better dirt pedals I've tried and is up there with the Lion '68 IMO!
Pete, every time you do a demo, the music and your perforamnce just blows me away. Are you a music theory man, does that help you write this stuff? (Assuming you write these music pieces for the demos specifically)
Thank you! I really just go by fuel in my ear and what I hear. I know a little theory, but just enough to kind of figure out what I’m doing once I’ve already figured it out by ear, to be honest.
9:49 - Beautiful feedback! Pete thanks for turning me on to this pedal. You are Kickin'it! Getting off on a beautifully nailed riff, when the tone and the sound are both just right -- There Aint Nuthin like it!
Love to hear this against the Strymon Riverside. I'm hearing some of the same sounds I get from my Strymon RS into the clean channel of a peavey classic. The reason I'm watching is I'm on the fence with the SLO 30 and wanted to cover all my bases....
I watched Andertons' vid on this pedal earlier and thought it sounded like crap. Somehow I knew it would sound awesome in your vid. I actually preferred it to the actual amp.
LOLOL!!! Pete man, your playing just makes me laugh!! Sounds so damn good, and your technique is just killer. This pedal sounds amazing. Especially with you playing it. Your channel is not good for my bank account. I want every pedal you demo!!! Cheers!!!!
It's probably the first time I prefer the pedal over the amp - the latter was sounding a bit too buzzy and harsh. Well done Soldano, perfectly played and presented Pete.
Love that T-shirt! I had a OG gold print BMF shirt I got at Loolapalooza! Actually got to chat with Kim and Chris that show as they were roaming the crowd. Great demo man! Cheers!
The pedal sounds as good if not better. best distortion pedal I have gotten my hands on. I have plugged it into princetons, 1964 bassman, silver jubilee, a plexi, direct to a marshall monobloc, even a peavey bandit and it sounds amazing and delivers the goods in Hi Fi
it’s so close that i’m only positive that you’d be more than satisfied with just the pedal. the slight gap between the pedal and the amp can be bridged by just a little bit of EQ as the actual gain structuring and how they react to pete’s playing appear to be IDENTICAL. to my ears a slight treble and presence boost on the clean channel of the amp that the pedal was going into would result in a just about identical sound.
I know that unfortunately some guitar players don't know how to properly run a distortion pedal but if Pete Thorn is saying "please trust me on this" then the numbers must be far bigger than i thought. Great demo btw, the pedal sounds amazing.
It's really, really close. I'd say the original amp tone is more hifi sounding, leaner, tighter if that makes any sense. There's a bit of muck in the lowend/lowmid with the pedal dialed in to match the amp,..and maybe a tad less toothy on top. Could be just the way it's reacting with the clean channel of the PT100, and obviously eq can be tweaked. Anyway -- get demo as usual Pete. The pedal sounds amazing.
Good comparison, and smart to use the same Cab. I agree with your comments, and I preferred the how you dialed in the Pedal a bit more than the real Amp. But it was clear, when you demoing the range of the knobs, that the Pedal could sound just like the Amp if you wanted. Thanks
Pete, could you please give your effects chain for the showcase intro solo before diving into the pedal? I admire your tone (one of the best!) and even though playing 40+ years, having trouble getting a good soloing tone. The use of reverb, delay, etc makes this solo POP! Thanks in advance- Dean Deese
I’m always here first to watch Pete play. The gear is cool but man the musicianship is second to none. My wife says if I played as much as I do watching others play I would be better. 😢what is that suppose to mean?🤔 Thank you Pete.
Thanks-

How does this compare to the Friedman BE overdrive? Great song by the way! Thanks in advance.
Hahahaha! "The Management." That was worth clicking on, "Read more," to see! Haha!
Phil McKnight just said run as preamp pedal no prob.. yeah idk 😐..lol..I love Phil but you are the man my friend who I'll be listening to..
Good thing I read this because I was thinking of running it through the fx loop. But that’s only if I manage to get one 😅
LOL 😂
Whenever a new piece of gear comes out, I hold judgement until it's properly 'Thorned', as no other RUclipsr plays like Pete. Simply amazing!
You're not alone :) But the only problem with Pete and his demos is that he makes literally everything sound so frickin' great that he single-handedly has caused major wallet damage for legions of players. Hahaha totally
"thorned".... Amen!!
That's a dangerous path you take! 🤣
The intro was like Steve Vai and Rush had the most beautiful Van Halen baby I've ever heard. I'm teary. Awesome work!!!! holy hell

I second this!!!!
It's called being a "working" musician vs poor musician
Pete is so good he makes _everything_ sound great!
So true
That's why it's good to have a pro like him demoing this stuff.
if Pete even looks at a guitar its going to sound much better
I would agree,Pete can make a ragged, cheap, wore out amp sound like a Germino 50 watt combo or head and cab. It's basically a Plexi with a little extra.

Watched this demo and bought the pedal 5 minutes later. Best demo ever with the direct comparison.
Man, every one of your demos is like new album music! Thank you so much for doing this brother.
great sounding pedal, but the amp sounds so much richer. Great playing as always, Pete!
Well its 400 for a pedal vs a 7k amp here in Australia lol
Amp sounds fuller..but a good approximation espec for the bucks
Agreed
@@pat1012 yep.....i will probably buy a soldano pedal once my balance that I'm carrying at Sweetwater goes a little lower lol
Ask the audience if they can tell the difference when you're on stage sporting both versions
Just bought one for $229. Keely Compressor after that. Sound is INSANE. Like OG 5150 insane.
I need another overdrive/distortion pedal like I need a hole in the head, but damn this sounds sooooo good. Excellent demo Pete, best one I've watched so far! Awesome.
It's incredible to see how close they are... Thanks for this interesting test Pete 🙏
Call me crazy, call me wacky, but I preferred the sound of the pedal in scenario. Thanks for a great demo, Pete.
Thanks for the time you take giving all of us gear nerds their fix Pete. What a great-sounding pedal and terrific playing once again.

Well finally we get a good sounding demo of this pedal! Plus: damn Pete is very fast in changing t-shirts! :)

Funny enough I prefer the pedal! Might just have look into this! Great demo.
Pete having more fun with the unseen Digitech freqout pedal than anything else - i see ya! Rock on 🤘
Ian Hatton deserves a shoutout. The guitars on those two Bonham albums sound amazing.
Did he use an SLO on those? I agree...killer guitar tone on them.
@@davidgray8796 That’s to the best of my recollection from back in the day. I know he used the X88R preamp on tour.

GREAT video..I totally hear that late 80s/90s Van Halen live tone, totally my guilty pleasure!!
What’s that delay you got on the solo tone there?
Serious fun Satch vibes on that intro! A bit of Vai at the end too! That was great!

Killer demo, have to get this, too much fun!
Hey Pete - another kick ass demo - thank you sir!
No substitute for the real thing, but definitely sounds useful...Pete has a knack for encouraging my gear acquisition problems!

Another awesome review Pete, thank you. I have the real deal, but this is a tempting alternative for fly gigs.
#1 killer track/tune, such a clean raunchy tone that sings :)
That stuff you were doing at the beginning, I think, is what the SLO folk wanted their pedal to do.

Good comparison, and smart to use the same Cab. I agree with your comments, and I preferred the how you dialed in the Pedal a bit more than the real Amp. But it was clear, when you demoing the range of the knobs, that the Pedal could sound just like the Amp if you wanted. Thanks
