The Maritime Sailors Cathedral annually rings their bells 29 times for the crew of the Edmond Fitzgerald. The year Lightfoot passed they rang the bells once more to make 30 to honor the man who remembered the Big Fitz's crew.
❤we love him all the way down in texas .....I play his stories out in the heat breeding cactus 🌵 😊 the 1 prolific songwriter who makes me cry and smile at the same time ❤ the best story to music guy who who ever graced the radio 📻
When I heard the news, I just had to listen to THIS song several times. R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot. Thank you for your priceless contributions to music. 🇺🇸🤜🤛🇨🇦
Gordon's amazing music has always been one of my favorites. He was a truly amazing songwriter and artist. I was fortunate to see him live at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. It was an amazing show! Rest in Peace Gordon....
@@MegaMr46 That was very special. Gordon got very close to Ruth Hudson, Bruce Hudson's mother. She mourned Bruce until the day she died. He was only 22 years old. May they all rest in peace, including Gordon.
It's fitting I'd wind up here after watching Rick Beato's tribute. The last times I was listening to this song, I was learning it on piano and using this video as a guide. I always liked Gordon's arrangements and chord phrasings. A lot of his stuff came out when I was young, but I knew it was good stuff, even back then. You will be missed.
If he was in the habit of holding their hands this horrible disaster would never have happened.. Does anyone know where the love of God goes goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours???? Superior they said never gives up her dead.
My very first record I found for .25 at a garage sale ..Johnny Hortons greatest hits. I think I was 10-11 and wanted it for the battle of New Orleans. Well I ended up listening to that double album for years! Now at 56 Mr Horton is one of my favorite singers..
My hats off to all 29 men who perished on November 10th 1975. May all 29 of her crew rest in peace, and God watch over the families of the crew. 😭😭 ✌🙏🇺🇸💔💔
This song was my reintroduction to GL. I remember his songs long before, I was still a baby. They were tunes I caught here and there in the background of my early childhood. This song in particular deeply resonates with me in all my musical sensibilities because it’s everything great music ought to be. Melodic, tells a story, and conveys something even deeper than the music alone and in and of itself could ever possibly reach. God bless Gordon Lightfoot, his muse and inspiration, and his trailblazing voice for aspiring artists.
i WAS LUCKY TO SEE GORDON LIGHTFOOT 1971 AND 1972 AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL LONDON PERFECTION .I STILL PLAY IS MUSIC .HE IS THE BEST SINGER SONG WRITER THAT EVER WALKED THIS EARTH
The reason why I really wanted to understand English in the 1970s was because of the lyrics of Pink Floyd, Donovan and Gordon Lightfoot. It was the beginning of a long friendship. RIP my friend, dear Gordon
Listening to The Edmond, gently guides me to the great lakes culture, the sounds, smells, sights, seasons, history, and the people, from the Chippewa on down.
One of the best singer-songwriters of all time. A very powerful song. It was so sad to hear of the passing of this legend. Rip Gordon....missed but never forgotten. 🇨🇦❤
Gordon had a lot of great songs this is a favorite song since I live here in Mi. Great Lakes good fishing and some of the biggest freighters that our goods from Wisconsin up to the East Coast
Im a baby boomer i grew up listening to rock and roll, country, country rock , it was all good music it will never be like that again live bands, keg parties ,hog roasts every weekend there was a party some where if not you had one everyone invited always good music good food good times no cops if there was they were there to join always a hell of a good time never see those days over i miss those now days people lock there doors stay home worry about getting shot or going to jail i grew up when there were rules not laws and USA was a free country now days people dont know what that means
Totally playable on standard tuning without a capo. I just prefer not to use Capo's because they eat frets. Regardless, this is one of the most amazing songs ever written. It shows you can use four chords and have the lyrics make the emotions come fourth with a message.
Nothing like that jangly 12 string to season out this fantastic song. I heard on it The Black List and wanted to re visit it. This vid is the best I've seen on ANY song for the chords sand lyrics to follow along . Thanks for it
I remember hearing this song when I was very young and didn't come to appreciate it until 20++. I humbly apologize to all those who lost their lives and the ones left behind, please forgive me. Bless and R.I.P to the lost at sea. I'll carry and appreciate this song forever.
To this very day this song touches my heart. If I remember correctly this tragedy occurred around 1978? (Correct me if I am wrong). This song is so beautiful and meaningful - especially to the families that lost a loved one. Gordon Lightfoot is an honorable man for donating all proceeds to the families. ❤❤❤
"At 7 PM a main hatchway caved in" was later changed to "at 7 PM it grew dark it was then" however Gordon never re-recorded the song after he updated the lyric (it was updated because the original lyric turned out to be inaccurate.)
i was just 14 in 1975, but i remember my Mom n Dad sobbing as one of Dads friends was on it. And back then the news was iffy and no internet nor cell phones. very sad
Come November 10th, the Maritime's Sailors Cathedral in Detroit will not only toll the Church bell 29 times, they'll add on one more for Gordon Lightfoot
Rip. Gordon And it would only be fitting that today and tomorrow Lake Superior has some of the same waves and is very stormy like it was when the Edmonds Fitzgerald went down! 15 to 20 ft waves on it tonight May 1st, 2023.
The Maritime Sailors Cathedral annually rings their bells 29 times for the crew of the Edmond Fitzgerald. The year Lightfoot passed they rang the bells once more to make 30 to honor the man who remembered the Big Fitz's crew.
yes thats correct except, on the day gordon passed away they chimed the bells 30 times. at least i read that in the news.
I just found out this great man has passed today (May 1st, 2023)! RIP to a truly great Canadian music artist!
AMEN...
I also found out as well my God! RIP Gord so will be foreever missed.
2023 is a solid run
Now that I didn't know. I was just at whitefish bay at this very museum this past week. It's very chilling.
So sad ...that one of the greatest singers ist no more under us!!!!😢
Rest in peace Gordon. U gave a lifetime of ballads of life's events and tribulations. My best balladeer to listen to. The best Canadian ever. Love you
Rest in peace, Gordon! Your legend will live on in Minnesota!

Hauntingly great vocals.

RIP to a legend...thank you for your wonderful contributions!!!
This is a great tribute to this tragic event, who better than Gordon Lightfoot to pay such a beautiful tribute. may he Rest in peace.
A great story teller and ageless music. RIP Gordon Lightfoot.

In 1977 my 4th grade teacher told us about her brother who died on the Edmond Fitzgerald and I have always remembered that. The song is so haunting.
I remember being surprised to see the chords were so simple for this song but it had such power.
You don’t have to have a PhD in music theory to figure that out. The song is crap.

Sweet Lord What a Ballad!!❤
I learned this was a ballad from my 5th grade elementary teacher. I’m so grateful she introduced us to some amazing music.
I remember this night sitting at the dinner table in Iowa watching a 13'' TV while eating a real quiet dinner !!
Listening to The Edmond, gently guides me to the great lakes culture, the sounds, smells, sights, seasons, history, and the people, from the Chippewa on down.
I have no words to express how beautiful this song Gordon lightfoot sang❤❤❤😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
Legend says this may be the best song written.
I believe it was correct.
If not this song,sundown 👌

RIP Gordon. Thank you for your beautiful music down thru the years. You were one of a kind. 😢😢😢
YES....soo sad, that he had to leave us....😢
RIP Gordon Lightfoot..... this makes me wish I could p.ay a guitar...maybe someday.if I this will be will be the first song I learn, thank you!
Saddened by the passing of this great legend.

Love the song, classy move calling attention to both the composer and the artist
Makes me cry every time I hear it...
thank you, love this song
RIP Gordon Lightfoot I enjoyed you being part of my life memories.
I, my brothers, and some uncles watched her leave Duluth, MN.
We went down because she was the biggest ship on the lake.

Gordon is gone now. A great musician .
Iambic pentameter. So beautiful for a ballad.
You bring so much joy and inspiration to us! Fantastic!😁😄❤🙏👍
God bless us 🙏 🙌 ❤️ ♥️ 💖 and the veteran
Good song. May I suggest to substitute an A2sus chord for the A major chord. It gives a surreal effect.
So just fret the G string at the 2nd fret, and play the B and E open? Nice.
Gordon Lightfoot donated the proceeds of this song to the families of the crew.

Love this great tune!
"Back in the day"the Fitz used to roll past our house in Corunna, travelling up the StClair into LakeHuron.❤
After Gordon passed they rang the church bell 30 times apparently. Respect and RIP Mr Lightfoot
Gordon Lightfoot great story. Song.
i was just 14 in 1975, but i remember my Mom n Dad sobbing as one of Dads friends was on it. And back then the news was iffy and no internet nor cell phones. very sad
RIP to Lightfoot.
Try Asus2 instead of A. Sounds better to me. Awesome song, love to play it.
Come November 10th, the Maritime's Sailors Cathedral in Detroit will not only toll the Church bell 29 times, they'll add on one more for Gordon Lightfoot
Speaking that the footage in the background is not like superior but Lake Michigan because I can tell the light houses to Charlevoix lighthouse
True stories are the best

It is November 9, 2022, it has been 47 years now.
I cry everytyme I hear t
Lake Superior was always a misterious lake, rip Edmund Fitzgerald
Having listened to "Back home in Derry" this sounds a lot like it. Except the chorus never comes
the A's sound better as A add9 and are easier to play. Then you get a nice drone on the b string between the Em and A add9
Thanks for your songs ma'am... can you please play i wanna live and for you by john denver? From the phillipines...
Leave the B string open when playing the A.
RIP Gordon
R.I.P Gordon Lightfoot 1938-2023
The Charlevoix Lighthouse makes a good background.
*RIP Gordon Lightfoot, you will be missed* 🌠
He will be missed.
Does anyone know who Edmund Fitzgerald was? ... The person the ship was named after? Thanx.
Classic artist
Rest In Peace
First court is an irregular A it's Asus2 and it'll sound better
The Fitz was bound for Detroit on that trip. Not Cleveland.
My guitar is in tune w/capo 2 but it doesn't sound right.
I believe Gordon is using a 12 string acoustic guitar
Play an Asus2 instead of the A chord. Meaning the B string is left open
@@allstar2431 Thanks, that was it.
Rip sir
uuuuuuuuh epic
Have a relative that knew men on the crew and another who came a coin flip from being on it.
this is charlevoix light house. lake michigan, not superior. its a glorious house of light though.
On the day of GL’s death the “musty old hall in Detroit”, the Maritime Sailors Cathedral, rang their bell 30 times.
Wow did they really? That is so cool.
