Very helpful and informative. Thank you. We have an old lilac in the garden planted by previous owners. Over the years the shrub was hacked at and pruned incorrectly so it’s really a mess in shape. It’s far too big a shrub for the space it was planted. Wondering how to reshape it properly so it looks nice not the mess it is. The deers eat it once the buds form and leaves break open which makes it look even worse.

Can you prune by thinning after bloom in the spring?
