- Three years of modeling on the Obra Dinn timelapsed into 50 minutes.
WARNING - THIS VIDEO CONTAINS MASSIVE SPOILERS!
This is a linear playback of all my edits in Maya and was generated using a set of custom tools to capture the data, process it, and replay it in a marginally coherent way.
If you haven't played the game, this video will be confusing and boring. If you have played the game, same problem.

OMG, how original can this guy be? Even his time-lapses are unique wtf.
...He made a game where you're a border patrol agent endlessly fun and enjoyable. He knows no bounds!
His powers are beyond our mortal understanding
@@vinilla02 He possesses powers some might consider...unnatural
What I _hate_ about Obra Dinn is that there haven't been a flood of imitators. Not of the artstyle, which is beautiful but something only Lucas could do, but of the whodunnit process-of-elimination mystery solving. I need more of this kind of gameplay!
try the golden idol maybe
Because it's so difficult to do! Ever since Obra Dinn released, I've been writing a story that can take place in the same universe with the stopwatch and everything. It's so difficult and challenginng, if this ever gets produced, I'm not inclined to be "Obra Dinn Clone But Bad Writing" - Once I get something substantial, maybe I'll take it seriously and see it to fruition.
The schematics time-lapse looks like its own game and I would totally play it.
Please make a schematic game
Holy shit how does it feel to watch a time lapse summarizing years of your life into 50 minutes
Personally I would find it gratifying seeing the amount of effort that went into the project each day, but I'm not Lucas Pope.
I spent all of 2015 making and refining and documenting a load-bearing spreadsheet, which I'm pretty sure collapsed as soon as I'd left in 2017. I could only dream of making something as unique and beautiful as Obra Dinn. (although I was quite proud of the conditional formatting.)
You are an approved developer.
You are an approved officer.
You are cleared of all glitches and bugs made inside your games.
You may go back to working.
Glory to the Developers Committee.
Thank you Lucas Pope for this game. It's my favorite indie game of all time and I often listen to its gorgeous soundtrack. 🙏
Me too - the music WAS the atmosphere. What an astounding game. Absolutely in my top 5 of all time.
Return of the Obra Dinn is one of the best games I've ever played! I can't wait to see what you are working on next. :)
He made papers please
He's now working on a 3D based 2D parallax-platform game for Playdate, an unique console which has a form of a Gameboy but it has a crank, made by Panic Inc. and already got hundreds cool games.
I love that background music when investigating memories, was looking for soundtrack videos with that, thanks for the content and the amazing game!
Such an amazing way to show off the work done over that period of time. Its a shame those skeleton animations at 46:15 didn't make it into the final game, they look cool
Well, looks like I'm going to be busy for the next 50 minutes
Is there a making-of of this making-of? This is really fascinating!
My guess, he somehow recorded a snapshot of the 3D art every minute or so, and wrote a custom engine to play it back, including automatic view shifting/cropping. The changes are too micro to just be source control revisions.
Really impressive!
This is one of my most memorable games played of the last couple years!
Basically spot on. The recording tool saved checkpoints and diffs on every change. The playback is in a custom Unity-built app that solves for ideal camera angles, closeups, etc. I rewrote that app 3 times. The first two were much more complicated and the third was designed to generate this simpler schematic style.
@@dukope1 would love to see more of it
@@dukope1 sir you definitely better than any game development inc out there
Wonderful look into a part of your creative process, and I’m patiently thrilled for whatever your next project will be!
Papers please
If you listen to the music, which I think is the sound that plays when the memento mortem creates a dead body, you can hear the strings in the background to the tune of a bitter cold
In fact, I downloaded this video for that reason.
IT HAS BEEN AN HONOR WATCHING YOUR GAMES, SIR!
I would love a video about the creation of the music. I can't tell if it is fully orchestrated or done in a DAW with some really impressive VSTs.
It's amazing how a simple gameplay concept hooks you and it becomes an obsession to complete it (with that phenomenal soundtrack keeping you sane), and leaves you wishing you could have your memory wiped when it's over because it's truly a once in a lifetime experience. An absolute masterpiece.
Ahhh I love how much detail you put into every scene in this amazing game!! Great video and great work.
This is amazing! Thank you so much for creating such wonderful art!
I wonder if you already knew all these things about 18th century ships before you started development; there's so many minute details. Like the crank for the cargo lift, and the stovepipe for the kitchen going above deck are things I didn't even know existed until I took a closer look at the ship.
love this vid! the editing is amazing!
Another great demonstration that programming is not only a technical feat, but also an artistic one. Congrats!
You are 2/2 on games with innovative gameplay interwoven with a well told story. Can't wait for your next project!
I've played games for all of my life yet there is no game that comes close to how much I love this game. It's the best game ever made in my opinion
The awesome process of game development demonstrated in such a unique way. This is amazing.
Super cool! Just finished the game and I thought it was one of the best games I have ever played!
This is really bloody impressive!
Looking forward to your next game!
This vis tool looks insanely cool!
I play games since 1995, and this was one of the most entertaining experiences I ever had. Loved every aspect of it!
That's it, I'm going back on The Obra Dinn tonight
Obra Dinn proved that the number of colours you need to make a great game is 1.
Just 1 would be a bit tricky. Even Obra Dinn uses two!
@@Swotboy2000 which ones?
@@TimmacTR I think they meant the base color, and the white outlines. Because the game could be played where instead of black it was blue, or brown.
I wish there was a way to mod this game, because I truly think this is one game that it would RULE to have a few more of. A huge aesthetic, and a mechanic that lends itself to smaller projects.
Bravo, it’s a masterpiece 🏆
thanks so much for posting this, now i can have a better understanding of the ship for a "recreation" type project lol
Make sure to do this for your next game, but model in VR so you can have a tiny Lucas Pope running around the environment crafting it all!
"This video will be confusing and boring." *Lies* and *falsehoods,* this was absolutely FASCINATING to watch after seeing the story unfold. (Though it helps that I go gaga over seeing what's under the hood in video games.)
Wait this is recent? Wow, a surprise but a surely welcome one
WAIT, YOU ALSO DID PAPERS PLEASE??? HOW DID I NOT REALIZE??
Now that's a cool tool. Digital Archives in a one-man-show. Impressive as always.
11:51 Oh fascinating! We never see the full scene in the actual game but it's cool to see that it was actually modeled out!
I’d wish there was another game like this I bought this game it’s so good. I hope you succeed!
Nice one, past me. Glad I subscribed and belled.
Thank you and have a great day.
One of my absolute favourite games
Perfect making film 👍
Holy patience
You are the best!
Very cool!
This video is huge!
23:52 This soundtrack is heavenly
AMAZING GAME!
Still my favourite game of all time
Wow this is so high quality! I notice you seemed to jump around the ship at random instead of completing room after room - did you first guild the ship, then figure out puzzles later? In any case, seems incredibly satisfying to model like this, with barely any thought about materials and textures... just geometry.
Yeah I jumped around a lot. Mostly just filling things out for the first (few) years. I focused on building the ship before figuring out the puzzles, but did make lots of changes to adapt.
The focus on non-textured modeling was a lot of fun. I worked in one big scene for a while too, so didn't need to worry about typical prototyping/referencing - just zoom in and model a lowpoly vice grip or whatever.
"Masterpiece"
awesome
Hey... Listen...
0:25 loose cargo (memento)
2:33 loose cargo (memento inside)
4:41 a bitter cold (memento)
6:49 a bitter cold (memento inside)
8:58 murder (memento)
11:06 murder (memento inside)
13:14 calling (memento)
On my birthday some stairs and some barrels were placed. Honoured.
I am confused, but entertained.
He made papers please
You can print the Obra Dinn model in a huge 3D model?, it will be awesome!
when someone makes documents fun
then makes timelapses fun
*what's next, staring at grass?*
I have been wondering if papers please is coming to android?
Also im happy to see that youre still developing games
Looks like a Blueprint schematics game
ost on bandcamp when?
Just finished the game earlier today; as a fan of both adventure/mystery games and nautical history, it feels almost like something tailor-made for my interests. Loved it. I have to admit, those last few seamen were abject guesses, though I'm sure there were deductive clues I just missed.
I appreciate all the attention to detail that you put into creating this setting. Is the EIC Obra Dinn based on any real ship for inspiration? The EIC Earl of Abergavenny perhaps? (Same launch year, also lost at sea in 1805, etc)
I've heard that the Obra Dinn is modeled off of several ships from the time period. Not sure which ones though.
Thanks! The Obra Dinn's outer structure is roughly based on the 1790 HMS Leopard. The internals are scattered mix of period ships.
I cured cancer, solved world peace and established contact with extra-terrestrials, all before breakfast this morning. But I feel so inadequate as a human after watching this.
I actauly cant count the amount of people I have recommended this game to
*Hail The King*
You can slightly here the papers please theme
One question if the next years you wont be interested in making Papers,Please!'s a sequel, what if someone else is interested in making it?would the person be allowed to?
holy shit lucas
❤️❤️❤️
You know what I will really like?
A 2 game to papers please but instead of being in arstotzka, it should be in obristan when the inspector escapes to obristan.
It's just a request. 🙏
hey luca pope you cand do papers please 2 we need that :(
I’m curious how much of the story did you have written before this modeling took place?
For the initial ship structure and internals, not much. I figured if I built a reasonably kitted ship first then I could put a story in it later. Plenty of tweaks as the story was developed though.
Please open it for machinima projects !
So you(The creator of Papers please) are making a new game then? Awesome.
the creator of obra dinn has other games?!
@@firmhand yes.
@@firmhand papers please is a classic and millions of youtubers (jack markiplier pewdiepie) has played it
hey lucas, when is next game?
Hey Lucas, I know this may be a lot of work, can you put papers please on Android and on the iPhone? (I know papers please is on ios, but it's only on the iPad). Why did you not post it on Android and on the iPhone?
It is now!
@@ShyGuy3101 I wrote this comment before the game was re-released on Android. The game was still a ipad exclusive back then.
@@wiktortatara645 Yeah I know, just wanted to let you know incase you didn't find out yet :)
I love you
I love lucas pope so much
Lucas pope is back
When Papers, Please 2?
👀
Do you plan Papers Please 2?
It’s been 7 years, I don’t think we’re gonna get a Papers please sequel.
Release papers please on Android please
papers please
papers please 2
First!
Sorry if this was already covered elsewhere, but I was curious whether one of the demises was influenced by this:

Either way, I can't say enough good things about this game. I'm glad I splurged for the physical copy on the Switch.
