Dear SofieReacts this is not your usual spoiler my dear but the Giles character had a series during this season of Buffy in England because Anthony Stewart Head's performance in Buffy made it possible to have a series dedicated to Childs in his homes country of England. The absolutely tragic meta detail for this is that from all the way back in Season One episode Nightmares we know that one of Buffy's biggest nightmares has always been being buried alive. And Giles - having to bury the slayer he's responsible for.

RIP Buffybot. The invention of her was so creepy, yet she was hilarious and adorable.

Well, this is amazing writing, directing and acting: Creating a charactere making you laugh, fall in love and get sad about the loss in just 4 episodes. From cringe to heartbroken in less than 180 minutes. There are shows who weren't be able to do so in 4 Seasons.
Remember what Spike told Doc on the tower? "I made a promise to a lady." It's that part of him, William the poet, that 19th century man of honor. He will never break that promise to protect Dawn.

Bambi for Buffy appears a bit too cheap.
Usually these things end with everyone paying more than they believed to have bargained for.
But, without Real Buffy, they would all be dead by now.
So, not a bad bargain for sure.
It makes sense that Buffy with think this is hell.

You might already know this but towards the last seasons of Buffy, Anthony Head (Giles) appeared in and out of Buffy as a guest star only, because he wanted to spend more time with his family in England.

That last image, Buffy's face, reminds me so much of the last image of the movie "Empire of the Sun" (1987). The boy protagonist, having lived through so much, is finally reunited with his parents, their arms around him. It looks like a happy ending, but when you look at his face, all you can see is the irreparable trauma he's lived through.
Yeah that was a good movie, it was Christian Bale who played that kid. It was set in Japan during world war II. He sings that song, that's the Japanese national anthem. That's a very powerful movie. The blood running from sword to the apple, those Yankee's!🍏💔
Watching it again with you, knowing exactly what's going through Buffy's mind - it's absolutely perfect. I understand her in a way I haven't before. Thanks, Sofie.

Willow killing Bambi reminds me of another scene in S3 E4 when she inspects a body at the morgue (trying to determine if it could be the work of Oz).
She can force herself to do things when she has the determination.
Tara axing the demon attacking Willow is like Joyce protecting her daughter in Spike's first appearance.
As said, killing Bambi seems a small price in exchange of the slayer's resurrection. I wonder if we will discover later it can have more consequences.
People also forget that in Season 1, in the episode where everyone faces their deepest nightmares and fears, Buffy’s is to be buried alive and Giles’s is that his slayer would die.

I believe Buffy's tombstone is alone in the woods somewhere, not in a graveyard where just anyone can find it.

I love the unknown territory we are in with the characters in this season.
You’d think how powerful Willow is and her ability to talk to an embodiment of the master of the dead, she could’ve just asked if Buffy was suffering in a hell dimension - then happily leave Buffy alone when told she’s in heaven.
Much like Giles could have prevented Faith from ever going evil by simply making a phone call to the watcher’s council to confirm Gwendolyn post was really her watcher, all of the problems in the series could have been prevented if people just took a minute and did the most basic of logical thinking.
This season is definitely one of my favorites, but it's definitely also darker. I understand why a lot of people don't like it because it can get depressing. But having horrible depression myself, I actually found this season rather cathartic somehow.

Ditto. I'm in a much better mental space now, but I found this show about 15 years ago when my depression was pretty tough to deal with. I fell in love with this season. My struggles definitely didn't compare to getting dragged back to life from heaven, but seeing how lost Buffy was and her attempts to find her way (no spoilers on how well she does or doesn't since I know Sofie is not through the season or series yet) but just watching those attempts helped me a lot.

I do love how Willow was dressed so angelic, and in a pretty Spring picnic setting before the deer sacrifice. Misdirection at its best. I think everybody expected the Resurrection spell to bring Buffy back in fron t of them, and maybe that's how the spell might've worked if the biker hadn't interrupted it. Buffy seeing the Buffybot ripped apart was quite an intense moment considering the trauma she was going through post resurrection. As Giles was training Buffy on a Hellmouth, he was dealing with a lot more supernatural crap than most Watcheer's normally would.
You’re saying that because the Biker’s interrupted the spell the delayed reaction meant that Buffy would come to life in her coffin and not just magically appear out of thin air? That was some really dark magic. I very much doubt Osiris would care where or when Buffy “woke up”. 😂 Huge oversight with the Scoobies. You’re dealing with really dark and complicated supernatural shit here… you should consider the aftermath of it even if you don’t think you’ll be successful with doing it.
I’m sorry but the more and more times I watch the season, I am convinced even more so that the Scoobies don’t actually give a shit. Or at least Willow doesn’t because if she did, she would think to consider the potential risks and consequences of the dark magic she’s meddling with. She’s not dumb. She’s just careless. And she wants to prove she can do it.
@@Girl4Music Possibly. Maybe the interruption made no difference so late in the ritual. Most likely the ritual was suposed to be performed with a body above ground.

If you didn't notice the follicle fried James in the airport scene, he was there. He didn't want to be left out so they used him as background getting on same plane as Giles. It's a blink and miss it couple of moments.

IMO, a crux of this episode is a lack of faith on Willows part. For someone who invokes gods, she has zero confidence that a higher power might reward Buffys heroism. Her fear of Buffy being in Hell is based in pessimism. Also, Buffybot is a beautiful tragic character. So loveable and yet no one cares for her. 😥
in fairness, the forces of evil are much more "hands on". if there is anything "good" out there, it seems to be pretty detached, if not completely disinterested. buffy and crew have seen a lot of demons up to this point in the show, but they've never seen an angel.
@sirmoonslosthismind Yeah, but on "Angel" there's Powers That Be so there is proof that there is also good aswell. Anya has talked about dimensions how if you have the one there has to be another to balance each other out. Like her example of Shrimp if there's one dimension without it then there would also have to be one that is only of shrimp. So if there are multiple Hell dimensions there would also be multiple Heaven dimensions. It all has to stay balanced Yin and Yang.

This was the only way. If they just brought Buffy back with no consequences, it would undermine Buffy's sacrifice. It makes it easier to appreciate her returning from the dead, because that is a journey, a challenge, and not a magic undo button. Revisiting season 5 wouldn't feel just as tragic and beautiful if we knew her death was only a minor setback. Also, welcome to UPN, where Willow and Tara can kiss on screen without a war being waged with the network.
A minor setback, like w/ Angel? l know he suffered and all, but it seemed to not matter on Earth.
The only way, no doubt. Buffy is not a show about happy endings; it would be highly atypical if SHE came back with a dance step, happily exclaiming. it just wouldn't be the same show!

I have been eagerly awaiting your arrival at Season 6. One of the greatest things about this whole show is the way the characters develop by way of major transitional events. Graduation Day, and the transition to college. "The Body", and all the changes that event required. Then at the end of Season 5, a literal transition which had enormous impacts on everyone. Every step of the way from the beginning, Buffy becomes less of a teenage girl with super-powers, and more of a hero. And of course it's not just Buffy. They've all developed a depth they lacked in the beginning. I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to this.
this is y its hard watching new reactors to this opener cuz when it aired there were billboards all over the place announcing her resurrection
S6 is dark. You already see that from S6-E1. This one ranks as 1 or 2 in my favorites of all seasons. Enjoy.

Ironically, we find out from Angel via Holland Manners that Earth *is* a hell dimension.
So, the sad answer to Buffy’s question, “is this hell?” is: Yes.
The 'bot is not able to look after Dawn, so Willow and Tara have moved into Buffy's house. The others obviously help, but Willow and Tara are the main ones looking after her, so they are living with Dawn. Willow has stepped up to take charge in Buffy's absence, but she is struggling.
Dawn may technically still be the Key, but without Glory that has lost any meaning. Out of loyalty to Buffy and because he likes her, Spike will do his best to keep her safe, but she is no more at risk than any of the other Scoobies.

I believe Amber Benson didn't want to be tied down to just this series. She possibly also had other things in the works.
And Anthony Stewart Head had decided he needed to spend more time with family in England.

It never crossed my mind that she could be in heaven. When I think back to how jumpy Angel was when he returned from hell, it feels comparable to this. The line, “Is this hell?” Is pretty telling, though.
I know the feeling, Sofie. The first time I watched the show, I felt the same way as you when I started this season. After all the events from the previous season, it was abit overwhelming to start that one.
I can't promise you it'll be better, but there's still some hope.
any way you look at it - two very sad episodes. but at least Buffy came back and the Buffybot got a decent ending, instead of ending up like a Sexbot!
Yay! You put this opener together!!! A darker twist turn this season takes, thanks to the move to UPN. I'd hate to imagine what The WB would have washed out of this opening and season.
The W/T kiss at the top of the list for one. It’s nice that we can now get to see them kiss like a real couple like Xander and Anya can.
This the most mixed feeling season for me. So much to like, so much to... suffer.
But pain is part of life, trying to deny it will only call for that ironic line "Once More, With Feeling."

Very rare to see a reactor acknowledge the insights you’re talking about. Nearly 99% of the fandom (let alone the reactors) thinks the opposite, for some reason. Despite the massive red flags all over the place It’s exciting to see someone using their brain. She’s clever. She’s good with GoT as well.

Well, there's history in not changing the name: Blake's 7 kept the name after the actor left the show at the end of season 2.... but you already know why they didn't change the name on this case...
My second least favorite season. It’s not actually the dark tone, but the overall depressive theme. It has some good single episodes and everything after „seeing red“ is epic, but overall it’s not my favorite.
Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Bargaining Part I and Part II’. May contain spoilers.
In the wake of Buffy’s death, the Scoobies have made arrangements for their lives to play out without her. This includes: taking over patrolling and staking vampires whenever they rise in the Sunnydale graveyard; Willow and Tara moving themselves into the Summers household to become guardians of Dawn, the only Summers family member left; fixing up Buffybot to perform like ‘The Slayer’ as a stand-in for the real Buffy so no one else but them knows that she’s dead. It’s not exactly a functional system, but it’s getting them by for the meantime. They ultimately know that they need the real Buffy Summers, so they (and by ‘they’, I mostly mean Willow because everybody else is apprehensive of going through with it - as they should be) have a plan to bring the real Buffy back to life. In resurrecting Buffy they have a few things to consider: who amongst them should and shouldn’t know, to which they’ve decided is Dawn, Giles and Spike, lest they don’t understand and try to stop the event of Buffy’s resurrection from happening. Of course, none of this would even be possible without Willow’s forever-evolving magical powers and rather advanced computer technology engineering skills She’s the leader of the Scooby Gang now. By unanimous vote and - let’s be honest - the fact that she’s the only competent one among them who can or should lead, as she’s done it before. Several times, in fact, just not to this degree. But that’s certainly not without it’s consequences.
Willow’s magical powers have clearly gone to her head - evidenced by the fact she never really stops using them, (as proven in this scene alone with her telepathically communicating with everyone, which is intimidating to say the least), and that she’s arrogantly confident in her Wiccan abilities enough to do the impossible: perform a mystical ritual to resurrect Buffy. She achieves it. Of course she does - because she’s the most powerful Scooby member of all the Gang. So it goes without saying that she’s running the whole operation whether the rest of them like it or not. That being said... pretty much everything that happens in the 2-part starter to Season 6 are the result of Willow being an extremely powerful witch and computer technology genius. This includes: resurrecting Buffy, programming Buffybot to perform not-exactly like-but close-enough-to the real Buffy, planning and executing patrol sessions, killing innocent creatures and using their blood for her spell ingredients (I believe this was supposed to be Shamanism - could be wrong), and just all around being a bad ass who possesses the power and control to do anything she wants. Risks and consequences be damned. It is the most frightening side of the character that we have seen yet, and it doesn’t get any less frightening as the episodes go on.
The evolution of Willow Rosenberg is immense. From the good-natured girl we know from the very beginning of the show to the ill-natured girl we see now. A lot has definetly changed and - as a lover of art/entertainment that educates me - it’s very exciting to watch. I LOVE that Willow gets a power corruption arc!
Remember that Giles got fired from the Watchers for caring too much about Buffy.
Well... Tara is in the Credits of "Seeing Red".... cough...

So many other shows before BtVS would have had Buffy better by the time the episode ended. Glad she wasn't...but those eyes in the last shot. 😑 in order to keep my own emotions in check.
Giles and Tara not regulars... off to a rocky start this season
Not sure if anyone on Patreon pointed this out to you but the copy you're watching has been censored. It's not a majorly important scene, but this version has edited out a scene. After the bell rings @ 7:26 it cuts right to the classroom but there's supposed to be a short scene with Dawn and the Buffybot arriving to school where they come upon a booth at a science fair. Dawn and Buffybot look at the project on display and the teacher says it's their "city of the future" and Buffybot makes a funny comment.
Not really sure why this scene has been completely cut out, but I noticed this last year while watching on Amazon Prime Video. My best guess is that this was the first episode to air directly after the September 11th attacks and in the city of the future display there are two parallel buildings that could possibly resemble the Twin Towers. I don't think it was a necessary scene, but what's even more unnecessary is censoring it completely.
Well, you know how streaming services are. They’ll avoid even the slightest potential controversy for any of their streaming content by altering the original vision for it.
‘BTVS’ gets away with a lot considering it’s a supernatural horror show but it’s a very popular show for streaming services to add to their library. I assume Disney Plus’ renditions of the episodes are much worse. Amazon Prime are pretty lenient all things considered.
@@Girl4Music this just makes me more mad bc it’s becoming clear that the only way to watch it the way it’s meant to be watched, is with the dvds. I had collected them all when it was still relatively hard to do, before streaming and blah blah. It took a while to find them all. And someone stole my entire collection.

i had collected most of the seasons in their "fat multipack" format, and one day i looked into finishing my collection, and realized it was cheaper to just buy the entire show again in the "thin" format. so i did, and now i have two of most of the dvd's.

no, the season five finale was never going to be the series finale. there was a bidding war for season six. cancellation was never on the table.

you're mistaken. wb didn't exercise its "first chance" option because they disagreed on price, but wb never cancelled the show and never intended to. what they expected was to renew the show at a lower price than what joss whedon wanted. _buffy_ was never at risk of cancellation.

a five minute google search is not "research". i don't know whether you're looking at sketchy sources or merely misinterpreting what they say, but _buffy_ was never going to be cancelled.
A lot of fans don't like S6 as they find it too dark, depressing and hard hitting. Personally I loved it with some intense episodes. Of course the show had now switched networks and had become more adult in tone and direction. In Bargaining we see the Buffybot still in action, and the gang trying to continue without Buffy, and of course the pending departure of Giles. They decide to resurrect Buffy as they just cannot bear it without her, but we know this will not be straight forward and have lasting repercussions. Some comic relief at the PTA meeting with the Buffybot embarrassing Dawn. We can see with Willow, we have plenty of foreshadowing on her growing powers and addiction to magic. We see when Buffy does come back in the coffin she is totally shocked and is in pure panic, as we saw in Nightmares S1 one of her greatest fears was being buried alive. The Demon Biker Gang of course know Buffy is now a robot, and think they can take over with pure anarchy. It seems to be a metaphor for life without the Slayer. We shall see.
Now they have decided to resurrect Buffy as they just could not bear it without her, but we know this will not be straight forward and have lasting repercussions. When Buffy does emerge she is of course totally disorientated and confused. Even though the Bot is torn to pieces it is still so traumatic for Dawn to see this. A great final scene back at The Tower with Dawn, there is of course a reason Buffy says 'is this hell'. Sets up a great, and very dark Season with some brilliant but disturbing episodes.
It is pretty depressing but that makes me love the symbolising of the show even more

Tara is not in the opening titles because Amber Benson did not want to be credited as a season regular. She requested that they leave her out of the opening titles so that she was free to consider other acting roles. She didn’t want to be tied down to the show. Same for Anthony Stewart Head. He wanted to spend more time with his family so his commitment to the show was downgraded to a special guest star in this season. That’s all it is.
In the book "Why Buffy Matters" it's explained that the writers discovered early on that Buffy happy = Bad episode and Buffy in pain = Good episode. So, Buffy in pain it is.
@@becca1189 actually, I quite enjoy the Buffy happy episodes. I mean there isn’t many of them but the ones that are there aren’t bad.
Listen, there’s a necessary balance to everyone and everything. You cannot just show one side of the spectrum and neglect to show the other because then you can’t really understand what you’re seeing and why it is something to see. It’s the yin-yang.
If you’re happy all the time, you can’t appreciate what it is you’re happy for. It will be an empty and naive joy because you haven’t experienced why it is you should be.
If you’re sad all the time, you don’t have a purpose or ambition to strive for. They’ll be no personal passion or motivation to do anything because you’ll never experience it.
You see how it all becomes pointless without that balance of happiness/sadness? In real life - there is both. If a TV show can’t or won’t depict both, then it isn’t a good show. It’s not realistic storytelling. If there’s only pain and no pleasure, then it all becomes a sobfest because the constant suffering and tears doesn’t have any catharsis. It’s just there. Not only is Buffy in pain all the time not entertaining to watch. It’s also not educational because we can’t understand it as there’s no point for us to.
Or in other words: “I don’t understand. I don’t know how to live in this world if these are the choices. If it all gets stripped away, then I don’t see the point.”
Why is it we keep going?
Because there’s something to keep going for.
But likewise, why it is we feel any sort of joy?
Because we also feel why it is joy feels good.
Without an experience of both - life is empty. And we see Buffy go through a phase of depression in Season 6 specifically. She becomes completely numb to her experience because she doesn’t understand why it is she’s having it. And neither will the audience if they don’t know what it is she’s lost.

@@Girl4Music If you're not familiar with the Mended Light channel it has Buffy related episodes that are really good. Something to tide you over while you wait.
I realize that you have a ton of different things going on right now, between Angel, Buffy and GoT! However, in the future, if you really enjoy Buffy & Angel, you might want to also check out 2 additional series. Both from from Joss Wheedon, the man who came up with Buffy and Angel! The first, and it's a really amazing series, is called "Firefly." I have yet to meet someone who didn't immediately fall in love with that show. Unfortunately Fox killed the show after only 14 episodes were shot (and only 11 were shown on TV, and they were shown out-of-order! For instance, the last episode shown was the 2 part pilot episode!) Another terrific show was "Dollhouse." In both series, you'll see familiar actors from both Buffy & Angel!
You must have a different version of the episode to me as I’ve never seen the scene where Giles narrates his goodbye speech. In my copy, it’s just Xander that reads it out and then the scene cuts to Giles at the airport with the sad score. I assume that change is due to it being the HD remaster and I avoid that version like the plague unless it’s for gifs.
Just checked the R1 DVD and you are correct, it's only voice by Xander there. Interesting that they actually did a recording of it with Giles and then kept it and decided to use it for the horrible HD remaster.

@@Girl4Music agreed, it's a strange decision to keep the Xander one when they had the Giles one, and why change it for the hd version when they did so many bad decisions for the hd version. The mind boggles!!

@@Girl4Music did some more research and apparently the Giles narration is on the R2 and R4 DVD:s and rumor is that it was also on the international broadcast (where it was split into two parts and not one as in the US).
So it looks like this was done during editing to split it into two separate episodes. Makes one wonder if the Xander version was done by mistake and they had time to correct it for the international version.
I honestly could not list off the top of my head the amount of violations that happen in this season. It’s that dark and adult in tone that there is no filter.
And that’s just how I prefer it to be. I hate sugarcoating and censoring in art/entertainment.

Don’t just put a dramatic situation in for no reason. Write it with an intention to say something, represent something or inspire something. It’s not even that it’s badly written because it isn’t. It’s badly executed. The writing almost always has substance behind it but it’s whether it fucking makes it to final production script. And whether the actors can deliver that writing well. Whether they can perform and convey it convincingly.
It’s this cancel culture. It’s destroying strong and substantial writing, production and performance.
It’s destroying true art in favour of easy entertainment.

I don’t think it’s in character at all for Giles to leave. It starts the season off on a weird note and pulls me out of the story. I can’t suspend my disbelief. Like he’d just leave Dawn in Sunnydale.
This season gets DARK, but it’s also so good, and worth all the pain in the end 🤍
