This will show who does their interval work.
christansdad bs, this shows who does their long runs
Really Real Obviously you have never run in a competitive track meet beyond elementary school. If you had you would realize the importance of interval training for speed work and endurance. All milers do long runs. This particular event also calls for explosiveness and recovery that is often honed by doing interval training.
christansdad nah all that interval training does is burn out young athletes
Really Real You mean "all that interval work separates elite athletes from pretenders at an early age".
A 5k runner would have crushed an equally talented 800m runner in this concept. It’s really all about endurance. Everyone can run a 60sec lap
Can we get elimination 10k? Strats would get a lot more interesting; nobody has 25 kicks in them.

How the heck would you even pace yourself? I’m worried that the two or three leaders in the front pacing too fast would get out in second/third to last rounds and leave the most capable runners in last position. Very inefficient way of running and not healthy unless they all play defensively.
3rd place guy's strategy was to use all his energy making it to the last lap then take third.
Pretty smart too if you think about it
@@macroglossumstellatarum3068 Absolute brilliant use of his own limits honestly. I'm more impressed with him than the winner

I agree. Watching this I thought "would if two or more are razor thin passing the elimination line". Do they keep running until replay can validate? Love the idea though.
MIDNYTE GOLD yes just like that it would be the same as the elimination in the omnium (cycling) they continue after which the announcer tells them who is eliminated
EveryDay So, read that wrong... read it as "kick" instead of "lick" at first. I was thinking what the heck is wrong with that guy? Hah.
MIDNYTE GOLD FAT ( fully automatic timing) will take only a second or two to tell which lane number was in front/ back by the millisecond. An official could then quickly yell it out.

@@blastedpotato the one in the front "jogged" at 5:12 mile pace in the third one. Most likely slow enough for him to clear lactic acid, but definitely not just an easy jog
I would love to see a pro elimination 1500m, preferably with up and coming runners. That way they want to kick to stay in the race, but they also are young/fresh enough to want to win that badly.
I was a hammer thrower in college. I'd party with the XC team / LD runners. They'd run naked beer miles on occasion, and I participated, and did decently considering our different specializations. I wonder if there's a way to incorporate those aspects into an elimination mile?
It'd make it even better if they constructed a financial incentive system to winning a lap and the biggest pot to the ultimate winner. Then you'd have the loser eliminated at the end of each lap and mad scrambles at the front to win the lap.
@ Thomas Mahoney: they do that
That's basically what this is...these guys are up and coming pros/collegians.

This was called "the devil takes the hindmost mile" when it was run at the indoor track meets held back in the 1960's and 1970's. A individual in a devil outfit would pluck the last place runner on the latter laps of an indoor mile. This was probably one of the most popular events in any indoor meet I ever saw. Ran track for ten years of my younger life. First time I heard of an elimination mile....this is awesome.
this is a good idea, but I think it would work better with more people!
Disagree, they would have to run longer (at least if they go out one by one) and that kind of kills it... I think it should be shorter... Also if there are too many people in there it gets harder to move around, which would be super important when you are speeding up for the end...
Why? This is perfect...the last leg comes down to bronze, silver, and gold.
No reason to have more runners.
Unless maybe you had 3 eliminated, then 2, then 1, and the last leg still had 3 left.
It's a stupid idea - total waste of time and talent.
@@brokenwave6125 I like your plan better. 3, 2, 1, and 3 left for last lap.
No
I think that there should be an event that u keep on running laps until there’s one person left
FancyOpossum Olympic pacer test
It’d take hours
William Lewis I think he meant a person is eliminated every lap so when you run one less laps as people your done
John nah that would be this with a 10k. Or you can just make it 4 runners. He means keep going till u can’t in this case lol
FancyOpossum people run 100 miles races... the guy with the current world record did it on the track, 400 laps at a 7:01 average pace. Took him over 11 hours
I clicked this because I thought the title said "Track NEEDS More Elimination MINES!" not "Miles" - somewhat disappointed, but also relieved.
This is an event we have in track cycling (including in the Olympics for the track omnium). It's extremely exciting. This should be an official event. Cycling has eliminations every 500m (2 laps) until it's down to 2, for however many competitors are in the race, which can be 20+.
I love this event, wow. Yes, def need more of this!!
shorter ones went first ... what a shock ....
Anar Chy shocker distance is typically easier for short people though
Distance, not speed hahahaha
Too bad they didn’t have any short East Africans in this, though. I’m sure they would’ve done well, although the longer the distance, the more it seems to benefit being short and light, and the mile isn’t too long.
YOA Buddy Bolt is taller than almost any sprinter and he is 6'5. Most sprinters aren't tall.
Lexi Jarvill anyone that runs distance knows this is false. Longer legs = longer strides
It would’ve been hilarious if Usain bolt got into the final 100 meter stretch and destroyed them😂😂

Running that fast I get eliminated on purpose
Malaki727 Back in high school, had these guys on our cross country team that used to screw around at practice and never put in a full effort. Coach chewed them out one day and the kid said, "Coach, we're too cool to run fast".
Thomas Mahoney as much I run, I dread my speed days, I hate running around that 445- 5 min mile pace .
Nice story though bro
Malaki727 Intervals aren’t fun for anyone, for sure. Mile intervals suck. 400m intervals. Etc.
Still, I miss the team camaraderie and being in good shape.
So much more fun to watch this type of race
This was really enjoyable to watch. Description is accurate.
We used to do this for 2 miles at a high school invitational we host. It was very exciting the first 2 years until the fast kids figured out the best strategy was to just run away from the field. You really need evenly matched athletes for this to work well.
Well at high levels (like Olympics) that's pretty much a given. At high school or collegiate levels, not so much.
That is a clever concept! Bit weird but strangely exciting.
I love the competition and strategy involved in this race
What an exciting format! I've never seen it before.

I did track for two years, and two of my best friends ran the mile. It was always really fun to watch them run. I was more of a thrower, but I did do some relays and 100 meter dashes.
I would LOVE to see this in the olympics! This type of running is sooo cool. The strategy is higher than I have seen in any other running event before. It doesn’t even need to be mile either. There could be a 10k version with 27 people!

This is way more fun to watch than "just run". Yeah, the elimination process makes the watching this so much better.
It’d be cool to see a lot of these track cycling events translated to track, some interesting races!
Yes it seems to work well in cycling, so worth trying in athletics.
This was fantastic to watch, and I remember seeing it on television when Nitro Athletics did its first year in 2017. This is a great concept because it is a hugely tactical race; a balance between maintaining your position against conserving enough for the finish. It really should be considered for mainstream events.
This is *EXTREMELY* boring to watch. No suspense, no real strategy, no excellence, and no opportunity to run your best race.
I love this concept. Way more exciting than the usual race
wow such a brilliant idea! I loooove the elimination mile.
This is so breathtaking.
This favors taller runners. They spend less energy in the beginning. The smaller runners usually gain something at the end of a normal race by not having spent as much energy getting to that point so therefore seem to have a kick against larger runners. Not in this race though.
Lol, I was just searching for a commenter who saw what I saw. It's basically "eliminate the smaller runners by height order" until the final lap
Billy Bussey distance is easier for shorter runners what are you talking about😂
Lexi Jarvill
Yes, but the shorter runners get eliminated before the race goes to any distance that would benefit them.
Not necessarily, don't forget that this is endurance, they can't sprint too much in the first lap... Short runners can beat taller ones at that speed if they try hard...
