      Instead of worrying about getting taken over by the 3rd guy, he should make a sprint to try and get into the first spot to try and hold it on the straight away before the last curve, then make the other guy have to chase him down.

      Really Real Obviously you have never run in a competitive track meet beyond elementary school. If you had you would realize the importance of interval training for speed work and endurance. All milers do long runs. This particular event also calls for explosiveness and recovery that is often honed by doing interval training.

      How the heck would you even pace yourself? I’m worried that the two or three leaders in the front pacing too fast would get out in second/third to last rounds and leave the most capable runners in last position. Very inefficient way of running and not healthy unless they all play defensively.

      MIDNYTE GOLD FAT ( fully automatic timing) will take only a second or two to tell which lane number was in front/ back by the millisecond. An official could then quickly yell it out.

    When I ran track, I could not stand events that let people on the track like that during the race. When someone comes running at you cheering you on, you know they aren't going to touch you, but in the back of your head, you're thinking, okay is this dude going to run into me, and it completely fucks you up.

    I would love to see a pro elimination 1500m, preferably with up and coming runners. That way they want to kick to stay in the race, but they also are young/fresh enough to want to win that badly.

      I was a hammer thrower in college. I'd party with the XC team / LD runners. They'd run naked beer miles on occasion, and I participated, and did decently considering our different specializations. I wonder if there's a way to incorporate those aspects into an elimination mile?

      It'd make it even better if they constructed a financial incentive system to winning a lap and the biggest pot to the ultimate winner. Then you'd have the loser eliminated at the end of each lap and mad scrambles at the front to win the lap.

      I run 5k in 19:54. So a mile in roughly 6:40. But I've never outright done a mile run and timed it. I reckon I could get close to 6 minutes. Besides, I was just joking, I know what he meant.

    This was called "the devil takes the hindmost mile" when it was run at the indoor track meets held back in the 1960's and 1970's. A individual in a devil outfit would pluck the last place runner on the latter laps of an indoor mile. This was probably one of the most popular events in any indoor meet I ever saw. Promotion helps!!!

      Disagree, they would have to run longer (at least if they go out one by one) and that kind of kills it... I think it should be shorter... Also if there are too many people in there it gets harder to move around, which would be super important when you are speeding up for the end...

      Why? This is perfect...the last leg comes down to bronze, silver, and gold.
      No reason to have more runners.
      Unless maybe you had 3 eliminated, then 2, then 1, and the last leg still had 3 left.

      FancyOpossum people run 100 miles races... the guy with the current world record did it on the track, 400 laps at a 7:01 average pace. Took him over 11 hours

    This is an event we have in track cycling (including in the Olympics for the track omnium). It's extremely exciting. This should be an official event. Cycling has eliminations every 500m (2 laps) until it's down to 2, for however many competitors are in the race, which can be 20+.

      Too bad they didn’t have any short East Africans in this, though. I’m sure they would’ve done well, although the longer the distance, the more it seems to benefit being short and light, and the mile isn’t too long.

    Hamilton, Ontario, Canada used to have the Paavo Nurmi 10k in the morning with the top finishers qualifying for the "Devil Take The Hindmost" race as part of the 91st Highlanders Indoor Games. It was an elimination mile on a 120 yd indoor wooden track. Splinters flying! Absolutely crazy! The crowd went wild every year.

      Malaki727 Back in high school, had these guys on our cross country team that used to screw around at practice and never put in a full effort. Coach chewed them out one day and the kid said, "Coach, we're too cool to run fast".

    We used to do this for 2 miles at a high school invitational we host. It was very exciting the first 2 years until the fast kids figured out the best strategy was to just run away from the field. You really need evenly matched athletes for this to work well.

    I did track for two years, and two of my best friends ran the mile. It was always really fun to watch them run. I was more of a thrower, but I did do some relays and 100 meter dashes.

    I would LOVE to see this in the olympics! This type of running is sooo cool. The strategy is higher than I have seen in any other running event before. It doesn’t even need to be mile either. There could be a 10k version with 27 people!

    This is exactly what track needs to stay interesting and relevant.
    Definitely a tough run, but makes things much more interesting than the sit and kick racing so common these days at big meets.

    This was fantastic to watch, and I remember seeing it on television when Nitro Athletics did its first year in 2017. This is a great concept because it is a hugely tactical race; a balance between maintaining your position against conserving enough for the finish. It really should be considered for mainstream events.

    This favors taller runners. They spend less energy in the beginning. The smaller runners usually gain something at the end of a normal race by not having spent as much energy getting to that point so therefore seem to have a kick against larger runners. Not in this race though.

      Not necessarily, don't forget that this is endurance, they can't sprint too much in the first lap... Short runners can beat taller ones at that speed if they try hard...
