I am researching my own heritage and the connection between my mother and father’s common connection. On my fathers side, my grandfather, Joseph Sobieski escaped Poland prior to WWI settled in Beaver Falls, PA USA. My father was Anthony Stanley Sobieski his father Joseph Sobieski married Francheska Brochefski. My mother, Geraldine Humphrey is on maternal side the granddaughter of Jacob Grimm who married Matilda Black. Matilda is from County Down, Ireland also is Scott and Black Irish.Thank you for helping me make this connection.

Successive Popes together with fair minded historians have hailed King Jan III Sobieski as the “Saviour of Europe”. Today in the Vatican museum in Rome, one can still observe a huge canvas hanging in the Sala Sobieski of Jan Matejko’s enormous 19th century painting of King Jan III Sobieski astride his horse, his young son at his side at the front of massed armies of cavalry from neighbouring states and kingdoms, together with his feared and famous Polish Hussars.
