Making more room in my woodworking cabinet meant moving all my hand planes out and hanging them one the wall, something I should have done years ago ... oh well ...

It seems that almost every workshop I go into, I see a lovely display of their hand planes on a special rack mounted to the wall. I have always loved this idea but never really got around to doing the same for my planes. I have often wondered is it displaying hand planes or are they there because they are handier to use. Well, with some recent "adjustments" in my woodworking shop I have noticed that the drawer space in my main storage cabinet has getting quite short. Time to move something out to make more room for other things. It seemed to me that the planes, which all have to be stored on their sides because we don't want to dull or chip the blades, were taking up an inordinate amount of space. What a perfect time to move them out of the drawer and on to the wall. I reasoned that it would also help to make my shop "look" more like a woodworking shop. I'm not sure that it does, but I love having the extra drawer now, it has made life much easier, less cluttered and easier to find a number of tools and accessories that I use quite often. On the other hand, having my planes plain sight now, means, for some reason, I am using them more often and not just my favorite plane, I am using all of them more. I don't think there is anything in the work shop ... that to me ... is more woodworking than the sound of a sharp plane, skimming off a fine layer of wood, and the odor of that wood, how it permeates the workshop. The sound and smell of real, traditional woodworking ... Хобби
Colin: I am so happy I found your site on you tube.. I was made a member of the "A" team when I went to work for the Irving family of St. John NB. I thoroughly enjoy and learn from your videos. You have inspired me to take up wood work serious. I have now started my own line of cutting boards and coffee tables. Thanks again and keep it going.

Hi, Colin. Nice project. I've been thinking of something like that myself. The music thing isn't too bad but watch the volume. I've noticed that a with a lot of this kind of vid that I have to turn the volume down during the music and up during the talking. The music easily becomes overwhelming.
I like it, probably the best hand plane storage solution I've seen yet.
A good, sensible economical design. Easy to make and "unfussy" addition to any workshop
love the look, I made a similar one based on your design, thanks for sharing
I just started to collect my hand planes these days.
for me it was nice adea.. Thanke alot Collin.
Thanks for that - very good - like the idea of music, but not that music!
Steve SteveS OK ... thanks Steve
+WoodWorkWeb Side note, its awesome that you can take criticism like that. It shows me that you actually care about your material.
Lmao! My thoughts too 😂
Hey Colin and Team,
You guys are doing always doing great projects. The background music is fine almost had me dancing the jig. keep it up. Thanks
Mark Mejia Thanks Mark ... appreciate it
That’s the exact simple design I’ve been looking for, thanks Colin. Although I’m not sure about the music.
Looks good!
I kept in seeing this in the background of your videos and couldn't figure out how they didn't fall. But of course there's a build video! Thanks, still build one for myself.
Nice system and solution to drawer space.
Slowvannah Farms Thanks for commenting
Great project, I really like it. Music, not so much :-)
Tim Elley Thanks Tim .. yeah, I think the music thing is a no-go
Bonito y simple gracias
What size compressor and nailer u got mate please thank you
That turned out great Colin :-)
The ShavingWood Workshop Thanks Tommy ... appreciate it
The music was fine, the plane rack was great.
Ed Waggoner Sr. Hi Ed, thanks for the feedback
Colin, nice rack. I notice you use a mustard bottle to store and apply your glue. Next time you are in a restaurant that has catsup in the bottles that are stored upside down (with the lid on the bottom), ask the waitress for an empty and use that for your glue. The glue is always ready to pour since the lid is on the bottom.
Michael Trent Hmmm ... I actually have a couple of those but have not thought about using it for glue. The one thing I find the hole is a bit large, but might be good for some things ... thanks Michael, I will try that :)
I agree that it is not an all inclusive solution, but for large glue jobs the katsup bottle is ideal. The mustard bottle is still a best solution for small and/or precision glue jobs
Michael Trent I still like the idea ... going to give is whirl ... thanks again :)
Good idea for the storage of your planes Colin. Not totally sold on the music compared to voice and shop sounds but that said still a great video so thanks.
Ron C Thanks Ron
Nice rack. I watched it because I'm going to make one and this one is my preferred option. As for the music I would rather listen to the wood working sounds.
Nice and cool , no surprises if it's moved to deferent part of work shop this what I do some time.
All the best.
Regards,
Khalid
ka m Thanks for your comments Khalid
Good idea and the music works.
Paul St George Thanks Paul, seems a most people like the sound of tools, well at least I know that now. Thanks buddy, always look forward to your comments
Nice idea for a plane till, never seen one quite like it. Thanks for experimenting with music, but it's disturbing not to hear the air nailer :)
Michael Anderson Thanks Michael, yeah .. music thing was real popular, and now I know :) .. thanks buddy
Rob Cosman has a build like yours but his is in a cabinet. he is from Canada an teaches wounded Vets wood working for free from donations ( good guy )
Great project Colin, I really like how it looks, and the way you attached it to the wall. Music is a hard sell in videos, although I enjoyed the music you chose for the video, I think a lot of folks are music finicky, I know I don't enjoy videos that have Rap music in them.
-Steven
WigWagWorkshop Good point ... lots of different tastes, but I am thinking sticking with the tool noise seems to be the most popular among viewers ... thanks buddy.
does the mustard help with adhesion?
"I love the sound of woodworking tools in the morning."
All kidding aside, I much prefer to hear the saw and you narrating. As always, great video:)
Thanks for watching!
Excellent idea, mister Knight! :) Thanks, I'll make the same holder.
Artem unknown Perfect, maybe you will share some pics of yours on woodworkweb ... would love to see them
A bit later, sir! Thanks for the inspiration
Holy Schmidt, I’d rather listen to a dust collector all day. I like the fact that you glue your wood using mustard, though. Innovative approach.
I was referring to the ghastly music of course, not your angelic voice. Just to be clear.
Great job Colin. The music was ummmm way over the top. I think what really makes your videos so great is how you explain things as you build a project or conduct a tour. Just my thoughts on it.
Derek
GiddyUp994 Thanks for that detail feedback Derek, sometimes I can miss the forest for the trees ... thanks again buddy, really appreciate this
Great !! I'm from France and I like your videos (sorry if my english is not good)
Tony Girard Thank you Tony, your English is just fine :)
Nice project, will have to consider that as a option to the small set of shelves I use now. Music is okay, but lower the volume so it is not a distraction.
Colin I love your videos and almost always learn something new....as to the music...I usually have my stereo playing jazz at a low volume in the background unless I'm watching a music video on RUclips so I vote no on the music. Thanks again for the great videos.
fishman211 Well ... that answers that question .. thanks buddy, appreciate the feedback :)
For a moment I thought he was pouring mustard on the wood boards!!!! LOL :-))))
+Johnny lol ... yeah that yellow glue even looks like mustard
Nice idea. Nice work Colin, however, the music not needed. We like the sound of tools.
Denis C lol ... ok buddy, I'm with you, sound of tools it is :)
Great idea
cejkwo Mass Many thanks :)
I enjoy chromatic harmonicas, pretty cool.i think though the music needs to be more in the backround.
Background music fine. Thanks for the idea.
Greg
Greg Teagle Thanks Greg
Oh!! That was the music. I thought the bearings were going on your power equipment. Well then, I prefer the saw noise to that "music". But a good project.
Good stuff as always Colin. I foresee you building another one after you hit the next yard sale or flea market. :) I keep my planes rightside up in a drawer that has a mesh rubber liner. Keeps them handy and they don't slide. Music... no music... either way is fine by me. Not THAT music. :)
Hardnox Thanks buddy ... always look forward to your ideas and suggestions
WoodWorkWeb My pleasure friend. You have a wonderful channel and always good projects topped off by your wonderful personality.
Btw, just a suggestion: since you are becoming quite the celebrity, you should wear those awesome wooden sunglasses that you made in all your future videos. :) Just sayin'.
Hardnox LOL ... I am going to keep those goofy sunglasses, they make me laugh every time I see them. Love your comment about wearing them, made my day, going to take you up on that ....
I got my planes in a box. I need to look into a better way to store them too. But this method wouldnt work for some of the wooden planes. Thanks for showing me an option to consider!
Willem Kossen Thanks William
Very nice idea. You got me thinking, how I'd mount my 24" wooden jointer plane for which i can't find suitable place in my shop
***** Yes, that is a big one ... so far I have resisted buying one of those, but I love them
nice project. i need one of those too.. i wasnt digging that particular style or type of music but its something different and different is good. try another genere maybe?
Joe basementwoodworking Thanks Joe ... appreciate the feedback
WoodWorkWeb your welcome. i myself just changed up the way i do videos too.. i always say to people its your channel so u do what u like ..always enjoy ur videos too colin! really informative
That's a great storage solution for planes. Good job Colin. What are you going to do with the blank space at the bottom?
carefulfelix I have a couple of block planes ... thought I might fit at least one of them in to that area ...
put spoke shaves on the empty space I did ha ha ha
Hello Colin, it is not my kind of music. Thanks for the idea, I think I am going to build myself a similar rack.
Good video and great instruction. Bin the music though 😒
Like the way you do your videos!! Please could you not do an Xcarve vid:) ;)
Nun mal auf deutsch, die Musik ist total lustig :D
While I can understand the idea of music, everyone's taste is different. Also the level of sound of the music can be hard to deal with. I do have a mute button, but that poses a problem of having to restart the video if I think I have missed some dialogue on how to do a particular operation.
My taste is this, since I am watching a video about woodworking I expect to hear tool sounds.
My taste also runs towards 2x, 4x, 6x or faster during most of the operations, because I know how to use tools. With the exception of how you actually make the particular item that you are showing, which I have never made and why I am here watching whatever you or anyone is making at the time.
MsRmaclaren Thanks for the feedback ... I appreciate all your comments and suggestions
Nice plane rack. I just lack the planes :) You don't need to switch off the background noise completely. May be check out my channel. I often have music but the background noise can still just be heard. Where necessary I add voiceovers.
Great vid prefer the talking to the music
Opp's sorry just saw it on the other video clip
Regards
Steve
hey if I sent you some acoustic music, would you consider using it in a video? For free of course. I don't have a channel or anything to promote but I have always liked your videos and you said you are experimenting with music. :)
G,day Colin, ill ad my two cents worth and say great video but the music is a no go for me, I like to feel I'am in your workshop and hearing the sounds of a workshop, Tim.
The music is fine, but could you lower the "volume" on it? Holy cow it was so much louder than your voice level it was out of control.
Built myself a plane caddie all most like yours cool 👌⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🇺🇲 wva
Great idea, but the music don't work for me since I view ur videos! :)
totol49 Seems a lot of us were not fans of the music, thanks for commenting
I much prefer you narrating what you're doing as you do it. If you want to have low music during the fast motion/ montage parts, like some people do, that's great, but it's almost pointless to watch if you don't describe what and why you're doing.
The music could be a little less... merry :) Something soothing not to distract from what you are doing.
apinakapinastorba OK, great, thanks for that suggestion
I enjoyed your post... but lose the music...😂
i prefer sound of tools.
NO music!! but good ved
Michael D Thanks Michael
Not to keen on the music much prefer to hear you explaining what you are doing
Love your show but not a fan of the music. I usually mute or turn the sound down on videos that have the random music. For me the sounds of tools in the shop is music to my ears.
BuffaloWorks Ron Thanks Ron .. yup, seems you are in good company
I don't like the music. I actually like the sound of the tools.
Skizzo9 Yep ... you, I think most of like the sounds of the tools, thanks.
WoodWorkWeb Thanks to you!
Nice vid...not a fan of the music...I am more interested in hearing your discussion about the project...
Drakos9119 OK, thanks, I appreciate that feedback
cool video but please don't ever, ever ever ever ever play that horrific music. where are people getting these weird sound tracks for there videos anyway? just show us how to build stuff (not) skipping or fast forwarding through the most important steps we want to see every detail or what's the point. if the details are boring to some then woodworking is most likely not for them i love the details thats how you learn. thanks
Thank you so much Eddie for watching! Sorry you didn't like the music.
I like this but I hate the music! I prefer the soothing sound of a table saw to this selection of music.
Anders Olausson lol ... I like that, table saw music, thanks for your comments
Rather listen to the sawing and hammering
Music is too loud and the tune you picked sounds like a Benny Hill episode. Lol. Something a little more mellow would be good.
Mate I love your videos, however that music is horrendous! Give me a saw any day
Good grief ditch the music I love the sound of power tools it’s a mans world well is in my shed
That music makes me want to throw myself off a cliff. Lol. The music is a good idea but please.... pick something we won't be humming and hating for a week
not a big fan of the music I kind of liked hearing the tool noises and stuff
FAST SS but I liked the rack!!
FAST SS Thanks buddy !!
Hope you're well, Colin. gotta say, not a fan of the music.. please no more. Great plane rack though.
AngryWelshman Thanks for your comments ... yup, the music thing not too popular, oh well ... no we know
I enjoy your content and videos but thumbs down on the music
The music is awful. Just let us hear you and your tools.
Dont care for the music!
Sorry Colin , love your videos - but the music No !
Lose the music it is annoying. people would rather hear dialogue or the machines running.
Music is distracting. 👎
Sorry, I'd rather hear the tool noise and or voice overs. I love your projects but actually find the music distracting or annoying .
Daniel Attencio Thanks Daniel, yes ... seems most people agree with you ... me too
Music was awful
Great way to ruin a good video is add music. :(
The music is horrible I turn away from the video...
