In a certain sense this demonstrates with great clarity that professional people in line organisations do not actually think about what they do at all.
It is kind of shocking to see a professor (at a top end university!) pretty much admit to having no original thoughts in his head.

This discussion by Thiel is brilliant. Peer review and rubrics are major problems. The hyperregulation and reliance on academia has been a major problem. Every peer review by rubric should be eliminated from the system, as a rubric means lack innovation. The problem with a system like academia is that there is no measurable method to quantify advances. Instead, it is about filling literature with overinterpreted irrelevant data that is often repeated with newer technologies.
Death may however be at present out of reach, as it appears to be part of the design of living systems. Death is needed to make room for the subsequent generations. In a sense species may be immortal, with some ancient bacteria and Latimeria surviving with very high degrees of conservation over geological time. I would rather die than slowly degenerate to becoming very weak and incapable.
I definitely will argue against the second half of the conversation that went on a tangent away from evolution, and towards Christian definitions of science and medicine. Nevertheless, there is a large population, which escapes diseases like dementia, demonstrating that these diseases are deviations from norm, rather than limitations of the design of human life. We therefore need to eliminate diseases such as Alzheimer, stroke, arthritis, and sarcopenia.

Peter tried very hard to deflect after the bomb tossed out about Brave New World. He typically dominates most debates he's been in, in fact the only debate I've seen him loose at was against John Mackey (Whole Foods CEO). I'm all for technological progress - although Thiel seems to completely ignore the dark side of technology, and how it's being weaponized with severe negative implications in places like China.

I don't think marijuana is the problem, I usually agree with Peter about a lot of things but I think he's a little out of touch with what exactly is going on with the drug stuff both the marijuana issue and the opioid issue which are two separate issues but I think he's probably wrong on both of them. Which is interesting because if he just followed his instinct, his libertarian instinct, he would come to the right conclusion which is that marijuana and opioids aren't the problem... The drug war is.
