6:26 harbor porpoises = Phocoena is a species of harbour porpoise (maybe a dolphin species)
7:29 Dieke switches from Low German to High German. You can recognise this because his pronunciation is very clear.
      8:51 no that isn't a castle.
The Holstentor ("Holstein Gate") is a city gate that borders the historic centre of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck to the west. It is the city's landmark and was completed in 1478. The late Gothic building is one of the remains of Lübeck's city fortifications. Alongside the castle gate, the Holsten Gate is the only surviving city gate in Lübeck. For more than 300 years, it stood as the "Middle Holsten Gate" in a row with three other Holsten Gates, which were demolished in the 19th century. The Middle Holsten Gate, which is now known as the "Holsten Gate", has been restored several times, most recently in 2005/2006. Since 1950, the rooms of the Holsten Gate have been home to the Lübeck City History Museum.
11:34 That is our smallest city State. Bremen. In the leftside is the Townhall and in the middle is the St. Petri Dom (Cathedral), and in the right corner, the Bremen Parliament Building.
For a short trip inside the townhall, here the Title of a very good guide of bremen: Travel Bremen: What to do and where to go! | Germany | TravelGretl

That's why it's important that people from abroad also learn something about northern Germany, because it's precisely these things, like the islands or the beaches, that most people don't know anything about because they usually only see the big cities like Munich or Berlin.
I live just behind the dyke myself. On the North Sea coast. We do have storms from time to time, but in summer it's great nature.

The green cabbage, that was shown in the video, is essentially a winter dish. Germany has many seasonal dishes. Cabbages, like for example green cabbage or savoy cabbage, and soups, like lentil soup or barley soup, are winter dishes, whereas for example asparagus is a spring dish which you can only eat in April and May in Germany.
During summer many Germans love to grill meat (especially various sausages), fish or vegetables.
The fatty food like for example Reibekuchen or the famous Currywurst, that is often shown in videos about Germany, is something that most Germans don’t eat an a regular basis. It’s mostly eaten on Christmas markets or during other festivals. 😄

One should say something fundamental about DW, the Deutsche Welle (literally German (Radio) Wave). About this WIKI... Deutsche Welle (DW) is the foreign broadcaster of the Federal Republic of Germany. DW is an institution under public law and a member of ARD, but is not financed from the broadcasting fee, but rather from federal tax money. The station sees itself in the tradition of the first German foreign broadcaster, the world broadcaster of the Weimar Republic. After the end of Nazi rule and the founding of the Federal Republic, broadcasting operations resumed. Deutsche Welle went on the air again for the first time on May 3, 1953 with German-language radio on shortwave. The greeting address “to our dear compatriots all over the world” was spoken by the then Federal President Theodor Heuss. In October 1954, Deutsche Welle started radio broadcasts in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish. In 1960, Deutsche Welle became an independent institution under public law by federal law. In 1962 the radio program was expanded and since then it has also been broadcast in Persian, Turkish, Russian, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Serbian and Croatian. This was followed in 1963 by Kiswahili and Hausa for Africa, Indonesian as well as Bulgarian, Romanian and Slovenian. In the same year, DW also sent film copies for television for the first time. From 1964, DW also broadcast in Greek, Italian, Hindi and Urdu, and from 1970 in Pashto and Dari. With German reunification in 1990, Radio Berlin International (RBI), the GDR's foreign service, stopped broadcasting. From then on, some RBI employees found work at Deutsche Welle, and parts of the broadcasting technology, including the broadcasting system in Nauen and its frequencies, were also taken over. On April 1, 1992, the station began the active television era with the German and English language television program DW-TV from Berlin. The programs are broadcast via satellite and expanded further in subsequent years. It is now also broadcast in Spanish and Arabic. In 1994, DW launched its website at “www.dwelle.de”, making it the first public broadcaster in Germany to be represented on the World Wide Web...

The food where you said it looked weird is called Labskaus. Its essenially mashed potatoes with corned beef, diced pickles and diced beet root. Topped with an egg and served with pickles, pickled hering and pickled beet root. Its not really fancy but if you eat it at a good restaurant or know someone who really knows how to cook it, its quite tasty.
As for the kale being healthy, I think you underestimate that its a winter dish. 😉 Kale in germany is prepared with a lot of lard, white bacon, sausages or even a whole Kasseler. Its cooked thoroughly and tastes even better after reheating it a few times, because it takes in the taste of the animal fats.

There are still plenty of Germans who spend their holiday at the North and Baltic Sea 😂 also, Spain isn’t cheap everywhere. I’m a Spaniard living in Germany, I know what I’m talking about. The downside of the German coast is that the weather can be unpredictable. On the other hand, the villages at the coast are prettier than the villages in Spain

Unfortunately, the Mecklenburg Lake District is only briefly mentioned. However, it has since become one of the most popular holiday destinations for Germans. I live in Mecklenburg on the Müritz (Röbel Müritz). The Müritz is the largest lake in Germany (although Lake Bodensee is larger, but it is shared by several countries). Additionally, there are numerous waterways connecting various lakes. Nearby is a large national park (the largest in Germany). A paradise for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts.
I grew up in southern Germany (Baden-Württemberg). The states in Germany are very different but still share a common identity. And each state is fascinating in its own way and has its own peculiarities. These videos can only provide a small glimpse.

German beaches ar not so wellknown because there is less warm climate in Germany. So with the means to travel, cars and low gas prices, people prefer to go to a beach with guaranteed sunshine and warm temperatures. We can have longer periods of warm spells with 30+°C but that is not guaranteed. Some summers I had the heating kept running all the time to keep the house above 20°C. While they were complaining about unbearable heat in southern Germany. Think of a climate like New Brunswick. When I visited Cape Breton Island I felt right at home. Except for the rocks.

i like northern germany. it peacefull and calm. Friesian are not very communativ with saying much without many words. thats why the greeting "moin moin" is for many to much and they only say "moin" (thats the (accurate) joke in the video). Of cause this video is only a small glimpse to northern live. the mindset and way of living are more comparable to netherlands and denmark that the rest of germany. they share the same weather and natural recources (or the lack of it) in the past. thats why in northern germany there are more historic wind mills more simular to dutch architecture because wind is the most stable form of enegy.
The tide in the northern sea is so strong and the sea is so flat, that you can excess some islands by foot for some hours of the day even if they are kilometers away from mainland.
the state territory of modern germany was contested a lot from neighboring nation (germany as a nation was formed very late in 1871) so every city and ever changing smaller alliance has to be protected on a very local level. thats why almost every older bigger city in all over germany has to have one (sometimes 2 or 3) big walls for protection. in our days there are sometimes only the more massiv gates left (like the Holstentor in the video). the walls are mostly worn down or demolished to use as building material and to get space. in nearly every old german city you will see the old layout on the maps. you will find a very compact city center and ring road(s) where the city walls used to be...

And: Be sure no one knows everything. // Meck-Pomm, smile, now ich know it is Meck-Apfel (english: Meck-Apple)... 😀 // In Germany we use the word combination "Pommes-Frites" or short "Pommes" for french fries. Of course it's not appels that are fried, but potatoes. "Pommes" is the short form of "pomme de terre" (german: Erdapfel, english: "Apple from the ground") 😀 Greetings from germany, Ouvé (Ouvé is the french writing and pronunciation of my very german first name (german: Uwe)... Last time I wrote this I got heavily criticized by another German, but yet I repeat it: Yes, Germany has beaches, and it has islands. I live in the south of the country, and it's about 800 kilometers to the German coast in the north, and about 1,000 kilometers to beautiful south Italian beaches. Besides, the food is way much better in warm Italy than in the cold and rainy north of Germany. And as to language, meanwhile I understand Italian better than north German Plattdeutsch.

As someone from the North West of Germany I have the same problem with understanding people from the South. It’s crazy how different the North is compared to the South. 😄
Of course the Italian cuisine is better than the German cuisine. Especially in summer Italian food like Vincisgrassi or just Spaghetti con Frutti di Mare are the best. Although I have to admit that in winter I like the German cuisine more. It’s a matter of taste I guess. 😄
The Mediterranean Sea for me is and will be the most beautiful sea. But I have to say that the coastline of the North and Baltic Sea are special as well. You won’t find the dune landscape and the Wadden Sea in the South. Especially the North Sea coast in Denmark is unique with its hundreds of kilometers of beaches. It has its own special beauty that is vastly different from beaches at the Mediterranean Sea. But as someone ones told me that the Mediterranean Sea and all its beaches are ugly compared to the Caribbean Sea and it’s beaches, it’s just a matter of taste. 💁🏻‍♀️😉
