It's really a thought-provoking conversation. I personally like Mikel Burley sir very much. After reading Classical Sāṃkhya and Yoga I became a fan of him. I think the critical analysation of this book fulfils every sāṃkhya scholar's hunger. How do puruṣa(consciousness) and prakṛti(unconscious) in sāṃkhya philosophy come in contact with each other-- this question is also there. I think we can get a plausible answer to this question from Swami Hariharananda Aranya (Saral Sāṃkhya Yoga and Pātanjala Yoga Darśana)

Nice, thoughtful conversation there, Mr. Keen. 👍
One thing I would like to say, if I may be permitted, is that the term "manas" is not really "mind," but , rather, "mind-organ." It's the brain, to which is connected the transcendental personality, by nature conscious, the purusa. This manas or brain is really the _organ_ of consciousness, of the transcendental mind of purusa.
Manas is wholly material in nature; it's the special creation of Isvara, evolved ofcourse out of prakrti, for enabling the experiencing of the sense-objects by purusa.
In the Puranas, manas is personified as Brahma (and the purusa is Visnu). Purusa remains connected to manas as a flame to a lump of iron. It's from the consciousness of purusa that manas is animated. Buddhi, manas, ahamkara and citta are the four forms of the same mind-organ manas, these different appellations corresponding to its different functions.
It's always purusa who is thinking, cognizing, remembering, feeling and experiencing, not manas. Manas is unconscious material substance. It's only the sensorium and the transmitter of motor commands from purusa. Consequently it's not really manas that needs to be purified, it's the (transcendental) mind of purusa. This is the _real_ manas! 🙏
