another fantastic shirt 👏👏love to see it
had to bring out that sunday's best for Mieville ya know
So glad that China Mieville has been getting more coverage on fantasy booktube in the past year or so.
A legend truly
All I want to say is I love the Possible Sword. Out of all the cool worldbuilding and insane creatures and beautiful prose and wonderful characters, that weapon and the character that has it, is the thing that remains in my head. One of the coolest weapons I've ever seen in fiction. Mieville is bursting with creativity.
OMG YES
Yes! Uther Doul is one of my favourite characters. He's so badass, but so enigmatic. I like how Mieville gives insights into his background but doesn't dive too much into his backstory and leaves it up the imagination of the reader.
Possibility mining ❤❤❤
Fantastic review man! I finished this up the other day and absolutely loved it! Really excited to check out more of Mieville’s works
I’m so glad you read it!
Doing your best Allen impersonation on the thumbnail? 🤣
Really spruced it up a bit
NO PHILIP
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is honestly one of the best fantasy books I have ever read.
Totally agree
Perdido Street station is possibly my favourite book ever, but I am yet to read The Scar because there are so many great authors to discover.
I guess they will just have to wait now!
Thanks Jimmy, great no spoiler review as usual
Appreciate it!
Criminally underrated series.
Mieville's works are the most imaginative and original in the genre.
I agree
That shirt makes you look like an optical illusion. Keep it up. But I'm planning on reading this soon. Chainsaw through a birthday cake is a great way to describe his style. Oh, a part of the 'boat' features in another Mieville book, "Un lun dun".
🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's a good day when your favourite Booktuber reviews your favourite book ... and LOVES it ❤
I hope I can do it some justice!
Damn, I gotta read China Mieville. He’s one of the pillars of the Weird subgenre and such a fascinating writer. Great review!
Thank you so much!
Mieville is one of my favorite authors and while perdido street station holds a special place for me for introducing me to the wonderfully horrid world of new crobuzon, the scar i would have to say is the best in the series. I would also of course recommend checking out some of his later standalone works--which are more sci-fi leaning but for the most part keep a fantasy bent to them as well. Embassytown and The City and The City are both endlessly inventive works. This Census-Taker in particular id recommend as while it is very much not as well liked by most people, its a super quick little novella you could knock out in one night and it is the work of his i keep coming back to the most. Its certainly his most experimental work, messing around with perspective and even the form of language itself, breaking all kinds of rules. The effect however is one of the most pervasive atmospheres ive ever read, along with a shocking exploration of trauma--as the narrator is extremely unreliable as a result of the events he's been through.
Anyway, great review cant wait to see more.
Love to hear that!
I'll be very interested to see what you think about Iron Council. I'm not sure that The Scar is better than PSS, but it's close. And yes, Bas-Lag is almost criminally neglected and under-appreciated.
It’s razor close for me between the two
It’s so satisfying to see favorite living fantasy author getting some attention! Thank you for the review! Scar might be my third favorite fantasy book of the all time! You even mentioned Pratchett!
It’s so good!
Yes!! I’m so glad other people love The Scar as much as I did. I see most people saying they liked Perdido more, and I do understand that. I loved both of them so much, I just think that The Scar is more…maybe thematically resonant for me? I’m not sure what it is. I think you really said it tho, I just find myself thinking about The Scar more often. I’m about to start Iron Council, too. Really looking forward to it! Thanks for the video!!!
Thanks for watching! I’m reading IC in June!
alright I’m sold on this series! great review. cool shirt. cool haircut.
Hey thanks 😊
Very interesting review. I'm currently reading "October" by Mieville. Really good so far. I will probably read "Perdido street station" next.
Awesome!
i read them in the wrong order because i started Perdito Street Station but wasn't ready for all the grit and slime so i put that down and read The Scar. i think i like the way putting the books in that order works. lots of things go somewhat unexplained in the Scar but you get all the gaps filled in when you go back to Perdito Street. the best one is that Bellis is fleeing something that she only saw a small slice of and she actually has no idea of the scope of the events that she thinks she participated in and is in trouble for.
Dam. You just kept pumping out those water puns. 😂
All in a good days work 💪
Very glad to hear that you enjoyed The Scar, Jimmy! It's funny that you mention that you thought a lot about The Scar, because I was the same way. I remember that I enjoyed it after Perdido, but I preferred Perdido Street Station (and still do). But it's hard not to keep thinking about Armada and all of the people who live in it after reading The Scar.
While it might not be the feast of imagination that PSS was, it certainly made up for it with its characters and storytelling. Not to say that Isaac, Lin, and Yagharek weren't as compelling as the characters in The Scar, but the story and characters were more of the focus to be sure.
Also, hard agree about Bas-Lag being one of the most underrated fantasy worlds. It's quickly shot up to become one of my favorites of all time. I'd love to see Mieville do more in this setting...maybe some day.
I want more Bas Lag
Spectacular thumbnail, spectacular shirt.
Sometimes we like to spruce it up around the Nuttwork ya know
I read that he Bas-Lag series, as well as Embassytown. The Scar was my favorite, though Embassytown may have been the most thought provocing. Mieville has been off my radar for awhile, but I think i am going to have to pick up some of his other works now.
I’m hoping to read all his books eventually
"Prose that feels like a chainsaw through a birthday cake" is both the strangest and also the most intriguing way to describe a writing style. XD Now I'm curious.
Hahahahaha try it!
Excellent review Sir. I'm 68% through this one and it's definitely better than PSS, imo as well. It just seems a bit tighter and easier to follow along with. The Scar has a more stable setting and less involved plot lines, so it was easier for me to get engrossed into the scene and it provided a little more time to spend with these characters. I have more of an emotional connection with these characters than I did in the previous book. I have no idea who I like more Tanner, Sheckle, Doul, Bellis, Lovers.....take your pick. All exceptionally written characters. Again, great review brother.
Hey thanks man! Also there’s just some really cool as fantasy elements in this one
@@thefantasynuttwork Such a macabre imagination. I freaking love his style.
Read these books years ago and you have me excited for a reread! Definitely something refreshing about the series.
its one of a kind!
Bas-lag feels like a world of inexhaustible possibilities. I still have hope that China will eventually return to writing a novel set in it.
I hope so too
Actually he would not. In one of his interviews he said that, he don't like writers who writes bunch of novels in the same setting. He wrote two novels in the city of New Crobuzon and here ended the journey.
Sounds fascinating. Thanks Jimmy!
My pleasure Curt!
Such an excellent review man. Perdido Street Station is on my TBR.
Thanks bro!
Great review! I really LOVE Mieville 🔥
Hey me too!
I live in Italy, english is not my first language, but I adore your channel, and your reviews are... such on point!
@@michele.monteleone thank you 😊
Great review! Love seeing an author from the new weird sub-genre get some spotlight.
Thanks!
Mieville is one of the most interesting authors I've read so far. I haven't read this or Perdido yet but I should definitely get back to him.
Great review!
Thank you so much!
I only missed the horror aspect of Perdido. There were no Slake Moth-like beasts which scared the bejesus out of me. I thought he would have been more graphic with monsters of the deep.
Good review video 🎥
Thank you!
Hey, great review. I read PSS and loved it and never got to this one...After this review, I'll definitely be adding it to my TBR list.
Love to see it!!!

Oh man this sounds so cool and I’d never heard of it before-a must read!
Mieville is legendary
Jimmy you almost (almost) make me want to resurrect Perdido, so I can read this one. Still not sure, but maybe lol.
you can do just this one!
Is this trilogy shooting up my tbr to the point where it’s an any-day-now prospect? Yes. Is that partially your fault? Yes. Superb review, my friend ❤
hey thanks my friend!
Very nice discussion.
It goes PSS > Scar > Iron Council for me.
Embassytown is his best novel for me (it's SF) and Kraken is a wild ride.
Un Lun Dun is so much fun and has illustrations by him! Haven't read Railsea. Or King Rat.
One of my Booktuber friends just recently finished Three Moments In An Explosion (short story collection) and really liked it.
It's a bit sad for me he's shifted almost completely to writing non-fiction. I've tried both, they were both too dense for me at the time. Might retry October again.
The Scar spoilers:
What did you think of the malarial Kingdom? I felt like the stuff was on me!
That scene was sooooooooo good, downright tangible
Great review! And an even better shirt 😎
Ayyyy thanks!!
While 90% of what I read is in English, with complex works like SF I just need to decide which language will work better for me. But I definitely want to read this series.
I hope you enjoy!
How could you review this book without mentioning the horror/terror of mosquitoes! Lol that island was the creepiest and most horrifying part of the book for me. I still think the impact of reading Perdido Street station for the first time is greater but still what a tour de force again by Mieville the man can write.
OMG the mosquitos were so horrifying. I didn’t wanna mention them just in case someone reads for the first time. I think experiencing that without expectations is a wild time
Nice review 👌🏻 I’ve been side-eyeing Perdido for a while. Curious about Miellevilveille
Idk if it’ll click with you but I hope you like it dog
@@thefantasynuttwork 🙏🏻 I’m not sure either tbh 🤔
Just a guess while re-watching this review. Jimmy sounds like this is his Number 1 favorite book for 2023.
Good guess 😂

🤣
Update. I just finished this book and I have to say I prefer "Perdido Street Station". I blame this situation on Jules Verne. 😂
Prety much all the seafaring and explorations ellements from "The Scar" I already experienced in his works. There were stil a few surprises for me here: the amophelii and Uther Doul. I also appreciated Tanner Shack's honesty, and Shekel's joy of learning to read. I think on reread I will be ready to just enjoy it without over the top expectations.
Oh darn! Well at least you still enjoyed it 😅
Good review, but I think you are actually underselling it. It's easily one of the best fantasy novels ever written.
I try to be balanced but yeah I think it’s outstanding
Thanks Jimbo
My pleasure!
What your experiencing is that he’s becoming a stronger novelist. I bet you’ll enjoy book three as much for similar reasons.
im very excited
It's a really cool one!
Agreed!
That's a big chunk of a book!
It’s thiccccccc
How funny. I'm the opposite.. I LOVE seafaring adventures! Maybe because I'm one of those people whom get very ill.. I like to experience the sea through a book from the safety of land. I'll take all the sea and pirate stories!
You would dig this!
Perdido St Station was already on my Master TBR so I had no choice but to add this one!
🙌🙌🙌
Are you going to review the passenger? Cheers
One day!
❤️
😃
PSS and the Scar are both 5 star reads for me. Unfortunately i feel he dropped the ball with Iron Council. Big on themes but short on plot IMO.
Excited to try IC!
Once he said, he wants to take two books in his coffin with him--Iron Council and The Census Taker.
But the Irony is no one like them as PSS and The Scar.
Is the shirt a water pun too? looks like waves or water streams 😆
Absolutely hahahaha
I couldn’t appreciate this book because I think Armada would get absolutely wrecked by the might of the American war machine
😭
hey what's up jimmy
Oh hey Kev what’s up man
