All I want to say is I love the Possible Sword. Out of all the cool worldbuilding and insane creatures and beautiful prose and wonderful characters, that weapon and the character that has it, is the thing that remains in my head. One of the coolest weapons I've ever seen in fiction. Mieville is bursting with creativity.

Yes! Uther Doul is one of my favourite characters. He's so badass, but so enigmatic. I like how Mieville gives insights into his background but doesn't dive too much into his backstory and leaves it up the imagination of the reader.

Mieville is one of my favorite authors and while perdido street station holds a special place for me for introducing me to the wonderfully horrid world of new crobuzon, the scar i would have to say is the best in the series. I would also of course recommend checking out some of his later standalone works--which are more sci-fi leaning but for the most part keep a fantasy bent to them as well. Embassytown and The City and The City are both endlessly inventive works. This Census-Taker in particular id recommend as while it is very much not as well liked by most people, its a super quick little novella you could knock out in one night and it is the work of his i keep coming back to the most. Its certainly his most experimental work, messing around with perspective and even the form of language itself, breaking all kinds of rules. The effect however is one of the most pervasive atmospheres ive ever read, along with a shocking exploration of trauma--as the narrator is extremely unreliable as a result of the events he's been through.
Anyway, great review cant wait to see more.

I'll be very interested to see what you think about Iron Council. I'm not sure that The Scar is better than PSS, but it's close. And yes, Bas-Lag is almost criminally neglected and under-appreciated.

Yes!! I’m so glad other people love The Scar as much as I did. I see most people saying they liked Perdido more, and I do understand that. I loved both of them so much, I just think that The Scar is more…maybe thematically resonant for me? I’m not sure what it is. I think you really said it tho, I just find myself thinking about The Scar more often. I’m about to start Iron Council, too. Really looking forward to it! Thanks for the video!!!

i read them in the wrong order because i started Perdito Street Station but wasn't ready for all the grit and slime so i put that down and read The Scar. i think i like the way putting the books in that order works. lots of things go somewhat unexplained in the Scar but you get all the gaps filled in when you go back to Perdito Street. the best one is that Bellis is fleeing something that she only saw a small slice of and she actually has no idea of the scope of the events that she thinks she participated in and is in trouble for.

Very glad to hear that you enjoyed The Scar, Jimmy! It's funny that you mention that you thought a lot about The Scar, because I was the same way. I remember that I enjoyed it after Perdido, but I preferred Perdido Street Station (and still do). But it's hard not to keep thinking about Armada and all of the people who live in it after reading The Scar.
While it might not be the feast of imagination that PSS was, it certainly made up for it with its characters and storytelling. Not to say that Isaac, Lin, and Yagharek weren't as compelling as the characters in The Scar, but the story and characters were more of the focus to be sure.
Also, hard agree about Bas-Lag being one of the most underrated fantasy worlds. It's quickly shot up to become one of my favorites of all time. I'd love to see Mieville do more in this setting...maybe some day.

Excellent review Sir. I'm 68% through this one and it's definitely better than PSS, imo as well. It just seems a bit tighter and easier to follow along with. The Scar has a more stable setting and less involved plot lines, so it was easier for me to get engrossed into the scene and it provided a little more time to spend with these characters. I have more of an emotional connection with these characters than I did in the previous book. I have no idea who I like more Tanner, Sheckle, Doul, Bellis, Lovers.....take your pick. All exceptionally written characters. Again, great review brother.

It goes PSS > Scar > Iron Council for me.
Embassytown is his best novel for me (it's SF) and Kraken is a wild ride.
Un Lun Dun is so much fun and has illustrations by him! Haven't read Railsea. Or King Rat.
One of my Booktuber friends just recently finished Three Moments In An Explosion (short story collection) and really liked it.
It's a bit sad for me he's shifted almost completely to writing non-fiction. I've tried both, they were both too dense for me at the time. Might retry October again.

Prety much all the seafaring and explorations ellements from "The Scar" I already experienced in his works. There were stil a few surprises for me here: the amophelii and Uther Doul. I also appreciated Tanner Shack's honesty, and Shekel's joy of learning to read. I think on reread I will be ready to just enjoy it without over the top expectations.
