B&H finally has a customer review on the HC500/550 (I've been waiting 3 years for someone to review it) and this purchaser said the camera's output is similar to a 2000's-era SD camcorder. They went so far as to say its 4k quality looks like SD and is "grainy, blurry and pixelated." I assume if it were that bad, you would have mentioned it in your review, right? Can you compare the JVC's quality to your CX350 or the Sony PXW-Z150? I'm looking for a run-n-gun camcorder that can shoot well in low-light (for weddings and gymnasiums) and shoot in full HD at 120fps (for the sports recruiter videos I shoot). Thanks in advance.
Hi Tony, I didn't feel that to be honest. I had the camera for one day and I wasn't shooting in 4K because for streaming that's not my primary concern (feels odd in this post COVID era to not be obsessed with 4K, 8K etc!). I didn't get enough time to look at the low light characteristics but it's a 1" sensor so it can only do so much. We lit the stage a bit too well (I had a headache from the lights by the end). Not saying this person is wrong but I'm always wary of more extreme "I hate camera brand X" reviews.
Loots of comments mentioning the CX350. Would love it if you did a comparison of both cameras. Our CX350 just arrived on Wednesday, and so far impressed.
It's a good shout Peter, but it's some time ago that I was loaned the JVC. What I can tell you is that I still use 3 x CX350 regularly. If I was buying new now I'd have another look at Canon and Sony but when you need multiple cameras it gets expensive pretty quickly. Also the fancy extras, like NDI (for an extra fee) can often be taken care of by another piece of kit e.g. Birddog NDI boxes. That's a bit more futureproof if you switched out your cameras. I also love the firmware updates from Panasonic. We now have basic face tracking AF for free for example.
can it do shallow depth of field for interviews? I'm trying to find a video camera that can do smooth zoom by using the buttons but that can be used for iterviews...
Not really @rsmolkin. That's partly the sensor size though. In reality I get the best bokeh (dof) from my A7S3 with a lovely lens like the Sigma 50mm or 85mm. Most professional camcorders have that "Video" look
Ralph, can you comment on the camera's performance indoors in low light -- like at wedding banquets, parties? Is that 1" sensor really good at resisting noise in low light?
Tony B it did surprisingly well but I’d put it on par with the cx350 which I would have at 12db gain. Is a 1” good enough? No not in my opinion. You need lighting . Certainly compared to a Gh5s or a7iii /a7s3... not comparable and I think that’s more the route I’d go if I was working on weddings
Ralph, congratulations on the review. I would like to know how good this camera is in autofocus compared to a Sony PXW Z90V and how good it is in low light. I've been testing the Panasonic AG CX350 and it's almost perfect except for the autofocus. I am dedicated to dance and theater recording, hence the need for a reliable and fast autofocus. Thanks and greetings from Lima Peru.
Thanks Carlos. I have a CX350 and love using it. Panasonic and AF.... yeah, it's really starting to just be a bit ridiculous now. Sony z90 will beat it for AF I think BUT the Z90 is a smaller sensor camera. This camera is bigger and heavier but if you can try to rent one and try it out.
@@EventVideo Good advice. Thank you. I will do it. One more question. What did you think of the focus and image quality of the JVC GY HC500? Thanks again.
@@CarlosTorres-hi6si Typical of a 1" sensor to be honest so average. Inside I was focusing manually and I had a couple of shots that I wanted which it worked well for. One was a speaker at a microphone (podium) and the other was a speaker sat in a char. Outside I tried the face detect mode. It doesn't work if you're wearing a hat (which is kind of forgivable) but it seemed a bit hit and miss
hello, from uruguay, i am in doubt about buying the jvc 500 camera or the sony z190, i work in social, business, live broadcasting using live u, which of the 2 would you recommend since the price is almost the same, thanks
The Sony Z190 is a good camera. I liked the AF but wasn't too bothered about it's auto ND filter personally. It was larger and heavier than the CX350 (Panasonic) although the JVC is similar. If you can afford it I would probably stick with the Z190. Personally I own 3 x CX350 and have used them a lot
I do not see any mention of the IBIS for this camera in any review or promotional videos so I am guessing it does not have 5 axis ibis like Ibis like cx350. Did anyone test this?
@@EventVideo is this the JVC GY-HC500U or JVC GY-HC500E ? because i sse in B&H website they have JVC GY-HC500U and it don't include 1080i in the specs. i asked them. they said it doesn't have 1080i.
Terrible lens on this camera, NOT 4K, no way it can resolve a 4k image. POOR POOR POOR quality glass. Compared to the Lieca Lens on Panasonic UX180, DVX200 this is a joke. THey took an HD camera lens and were like ehh, we'll add 4k support and call it a day. SAD!
Having used the DVX200, that's a pretty low bar. I am sure event video would have noticed that horrendous of a product even in 1 day of testing. I decided to return my DVX200 less than 3 hours after the delivery driver dropped it off. I wanted to love it because of the physical size, but that 4K crop was horrible. I am by no means a pro, I do a little bit of hobby type work, none of it is scripted or storyboarded. Let alone lit properly. I've used numerous Panasonic cameras alongside my Sony CX900, and they all stunk. I haven't tried the CX350 yet, but if EV says the autofocus stinks I won't even bother. The little bit of footage I have seen of this camera claiming not to have been corrected has been acceptable for my uses. Sure there are better options for controlled sets, but not much out there anymore for real life that's very good. My ancient CX900 still fetches nearly 50% of the price I paid new, in the rapidly obsolescent electronics space I think that's pretty good. HD Lens..... you're funny. Lenses that don't work well for 4K on a 1 inch sensor also don't work well for HD on a 1 inch sensor......the difference is that 4K is compressed more heavily so you notice it more. Don't blame artifacts caused by poor compression algorithms on the glass. No doubt if after I receive mine and it stinks as bad as you claim, I will update this comment.

It does Michael. My footage was shot in 1080i

It was a while ago unfortunately but was given to me by JVC
its got the same soft look like the Panasonic Ux-90 sad

The movement cadence is horrible with this unit.
