@@calthekonqueror312 that is the resonable assertion, politicians are not resonable. When you attempt to wield peace like a cudgel, and in reality are using a nerf bat then are surprised when your foes are not cowering at your feet at the mention of your name alone, only then have you reached the levels of iciocy required to be a politician.
I hope to die a boring and uninteresting death in the most mundane way possible, yet will gladly bleed out on a battlefield if fighting for the peace I wish to return to my nation to reappear could come to pass.

      that's the point
It is interesting to note that there are an even number of justices in the Supreme Court. No mention has yet been made on how split decisions are handled or avoided. This may be an explanation for having four trials of Nute Gunray, if the Court was split in deciding each of them and unable to reach a unanimous verdict, or even a supermajority (if this was required), or even in rendering verdicts at all (if simple majority was sufficient) causing a deadlock.

I think the Darth Plaguies novel by James Luceno does a pretty good at displaying how badly things in the senate were: You had senators asleep/taking naps during sessions, acting like juvenile kids sneering and shouting to one another at times in mocking ways, being grumpy at their vacations being interrupted due to actual important things happening that needed them to do their actual jobs, and nobody seemingly really too interested in anything but themselves...oh, and of course: Assassinations - Either political plots to entrap someone someone did not like, or actual "we got bodies" eliminations were also a thing. So yikes: Talk about a place that would have needed a good scrubbing down and cleaning up from all the corruption and other poor practices that a rather Sithy buncha individuals had been carefully cultivating from behind the curtains for a millennia.

    • @videocrowsnest5251
      @videocrowsnest5251 2 года назад +3

@@fallout560 Not from the Us, but said folks don't strike me as the brightest bulbs in the world, and seems from my far away point of view like you got a lot of folk both in day to day life, and politics, who are more than comfy watching nothing much happen, nothing change, bowing backwards so much their backs must be breaking to try and upkeep the all-mighty status quo. Mind you, doing this currently when change is needed more than ever is basically akin to that one meme with the burning house and the dog going "this is fine."
Besides that, please excuse me for not commenting more, because anytime US politics tend to come up in any remote way it creates a frankly ridiculous rooster fight where nobody engaged in the rather militant "us vs them" finger pointing and yelling seems to care much about compromises, hearing what the other has to say, or even having a decent conversation on the matter where ones engaging in it see each other as equal, and can walk away with something to think on. Anyone who tries to build bridges (something desperately needed) basically is also treated with hostility for some reason.
Even me clarifying this feels like it's basically going to be enough to get finger pointing and fist shaking going on. And it's very exhausting, especially as someone who isn't in nor from the US but has to witness it spill out absolutely everywhere. It's also ultimately a pointless waste, because until actual talking and discussion starts taking place instead of militant "let's beat em up!" style gurgling where distrust is the norm, hate is on the rise, and where nobody seems to agree on even respecting things like human rights as a guiding principle, or what passes for common manners to the point the conversation and dialogue is from a genuine curiosity and open mindedness to talk, it won't lead to anything more than the continuation of the pitchfork and torch shaking.

I feel like there can be cases made for some of the senators to at least be argued also get a kinda or half pass, but for all Star Wars putting expanded backgrounds to a lot of characters. It seems the Galatic Senate of thousands didn't recieve nearly as many cases of that. Despite lack of details on her whole story, but by what is givin and maybe assumed based on that, I believe a case can be made for a half pass on Silya Shessaun. I would also present Riyo Chuchi as a candidate for a half pass as well.

Very good point and actually based on what happened in the Legends continuity after ROTJ I have an idea on what they could have done to fix the problem the republic had that you just mentioned. Instead of one major galactic power there should be maybe 3 who are members of a Galactic Alliance to serve as mediators between them alongside the Jedi. The 3 factions could be the Republic, the Empire and the Confederacy.
The Alliance would possess a small but strong fleet and army to give themselves enough muscle to ensure their authority is respected, would be forbidden from having actual political power, is tasked with reducing conflict between Alliance members, promoting peace, reducing corruption within Alliance members, ensure that common enemies to all members are not unchallenged, and cooperate with the Jedi.

They represented trade interests and corporate interests, not the public interest, even of the citizens in their worlds sometimes, which is one reason why the Grand Army got at least mixed reception during the clone wars. Furthermore, constant threat of space battles suddenly erupting and widespread piracy was pretty bad for trade. Furthermore, the populist senators like Bail Organa not only were rather shut out by the corporate-aligned senators and later, by Palpatine when he persecuted the senators who opposed his power grab and transformation into his authoritarian Galactic Empire. While I like that the corporate powers were annihilated and nationalized, I did not like the means and rationalization.”

Honestly the only 2 really useful political figures were Mass Amedda and Sly Moore because they to wanted the galactic Empire a reality. The fact they knew Palpatine was Sith Lord from the beginning was badass in a sense that they basically said fuck it to what they believed was useless form of government in the Republic and helped Palpatine gain power. You could argue they were Yes men sell outs or just pyschophant's.
But they weren't just that because actually did things that would help Palpatine gain power without specifically asking for something in return. And we you see Mass Amedda talking to chancellor Palpatine it seems like a deep political and strategic power play or grab. And Palpatine seemed as if he was listing to suggestions from Mass Amedda on how to go about his next big move and was smirking with intrigue. Cleary palpatine respected Mass Amedda as a close friend and ally in forming the empire that he would reward in time for his efforts and Mass Ammeda doesn't seem appear like hes asking for any favours in return.
Where as the the true useless yes men simply just agree and hope to get something out it for themselves in return and if shit hits the fan there reputation is ruined they would just abandon ship and point the finger acting like they weren't apart of this political scandal or whatever or evil plot take over and change the whole way of governing period. Mass Amedda seems like the type of guy who do what ever he could to help Palpatine out of situation that could expose his true intentions or through backlash from any sort of scandal . Able to spin the narrative effectively in Palpatines favour or find legal loop holes to make what palpatine did legally justified even if morally wrong. While Sly Moore seemed to run a tight ship in hammering the policies and making sure they get passed by the legistslators as well.
So That why I think they are the most useful but for the wrong reasons by enabling and aiding an evil space wizard to come to power. Yes they would be considered sellouts and traders to the republic. Also Loyal and close friends to palpatine but not pyschophants. As they are able to not just blindly follow but think for themselves and even aren't afraid to disagree or have different opinion how palpatine should form his galactic empire. But I also think that Sheev Palpatine respected and welcomed any in put from Mass Amedda or Sly Moore because they were strong willed political figures that weren't push overs. And Mass Amedda was very commanding and intimidating chairman . So he could easily bribe the pyscophants to being sheevs political minions while intimidate and black mail opposing senators in to submission or force them sign policies that would give rise to Sheevs rule over the senate. So Irony is the most effective ones where the ones closest to Palpatine in the creation on the empire than those opposing it lol.

One must remember that the Galactic Republic’s Senate ruled for nearly twenty eight thousand years, and for the most part they were successful, though one thousand years of peace brought untold corruption to the Senate. In times of crisis in the Old Republic Senate was quick to act, and those times of peace they respected their people proper, but the New Sith Wars brought destruction to the Galaxy on such a scale that they were force into a Dark Age. The real big thing is that the Republic/Empire are not really a "nation" more of a EU or UN. They are composed of thousands (presumably at least 2000) essentially independent civilisations each with their own governments and laws. Unlike our governments where most party members are just votes/seats for the party leader, in the SW republican senate most senators care only about their own civilisation. This is essentially why the senate continued in the empire as the only way to control the thousands of civilisations and untold trillions upon trillions of sentients across an entire galaxy as well as the whole point of the Death Star. Trying to control the whole galaxy with armies isn't practical, but scaring them into submission could be.

From what I understand in legends (and what I’m inferring from some gaps in the legends details) there is a hilarious ineptitude in one group of senators in particular, the senators for the Pantorans. Chuchi voted in favor of clovis becoming the new head of the banking clan, which apparently destroyed her political career. Afterwards, the chairman’s daughter was put in the position by fiat and decided to sign the petition of 2000. Interestingly, she wasn’t purged and her planet not crushed, but far worse. The empire, according to old source books, full on ejected Pantora from the empire and cut off all trade with the planet. This simple action led to famine and led to the Pantorans desperately trying to trade with anyone, with factions divided into the Republican faction, which wanted to join the alliance, the Appeasement faction, which wanted to return to the empire as ANYTHING so they can get trade, and the expansionists, basically wanting to turn pantora into a new Nal hutta. Last place legends leaves them is being skipped in galactic affairs and trying to develop their own unique technology while slowly expanding colonies around their sector, with role play books saying they had clone wars era weapons.

I've been wondering that myself for a while now. I figure "petition of 2000" isn't meant to be literal - it wasn't signed by 2000 Senators/reps, but rather that the ones who signed it claimed to be doing so on behalf of the whole Senate. But that's just my headcanon there.

@@geetslys maybe but that doesn't really fit for me cos it would be misrepresentation (and I don't think that fits THESE senators) and besides anyone who read it would see that it wasn't. I always saw it as 2,000 senators (and including some lesser reps maybe) signed this petition and there were something like 10,000 total 'cause Palpatine claims at one point that he controls the senate eg. the majority. Surely a galaxy that big with so many species and planets would need more than 2,000 senators even just for the major worlds? I mean there are a few hundred(?) human worlds alone - Naboo, Corellia, Tanaab, Chandrila and Corulag to name only a few, each of these would probably have a senator. The United States senate apparently has 100 senators and that's 1 country on 1 planet...
