The tabla is not just a background or heartbeat and is an incredible solo instrument. In fact in most Indian classical concerts all instruments, including the tabla, take turns as the lead.
Watch the movie version of this song too. It includes a fusion of Bharatnatyam (Classical dance from Tamilnadu) and Kathak (Classical dance from Uttar Pradesh)

I forgot to add that Kalinga Narthana Thillana is an ancient composition in the Carnatic style of Indian classical music, a *thillana* generally accompanying classical Bharatnatyam dance. This particular rendition by Kuldeep Pai and two child prodigies is very enjoyable

Guys, react to the original version of this song. It's from a movie called Vishwaroopam. The choreography as well as the lyrics is mesmerizing. And the vocals by the legendary singer Shankar Mahadevan and actor Kamal Haasan is beautiful.
Hey Efra, about trying out the Tabla by yourself, Ustad Zakir Hussain once said, "Just like any percussion instrument, if you can play drums, you'll be able to play Tabla, but to play it they way it's supposed to be played, you have to learn some rules."

PLEASE WATCH THE ORIGINAL. The legend Dr.Kamal Haasan wrote the lyrics in Thamizh (or Tamil if your tongue can't handle it), sang it and learnt Kathak from none other than Dr. Birju Maharaj for weeks just for this 1 song in the movie (Vishwaroopam). Apart from his 10 other talents, Dr. Kamal Haasan is already a trained Bharatnaatiyam dancer. This song was composed in Thamizh, Thelugu and Hindi as the movie was released in those 3 languages.
One of the singers here is my classmate Harini (Rini is her artist name). She has some absolutely stunning fusion stuff on youtube. She plays the violin and also is an expert singer. She was so humble in school we had no idea the heights to which she would rise!
You should watch the original song sung, danced and directed by Dr.Kamalhassan in Vishwaroopam movie! You should for sure to ensure your soul sings and dances with him!

I am no expert or anything, but I love all kinds of music, language doesn't matter to me. I am a mallu(a person who talks in Malayalam). Among all da languages what I truly believe is that Tamil language is a work of art. The Tamil language itself is music to my ears. Tamil music touches me more than any kind of music. Pls react more to Tamil music.
Efra and Wale, I have been a tabla player myself, this is the only instrument I learnt through the Indian classical route 🙂. The way I would describe a tabla player’s job is pretty close to your assessment of him carrying the heart beat of the song. Tabla is the constant time piece/tempo of the song, the tempo would rarely change during songs generally; sometimes it does though, during some classical compositions. An analogy to that would be a progressive rock track in the west. What you feel as the tempo changing is, mostly the tabla player double/four/eight timing keeping the tempo constant.
Efra, wale guys. U got to check out jiya jale studio version by berklee. Its a wonderful composition. Which will surprise you with its arrangement, percussion, strings setup. Its bloody brilliant and a must watch. A beautiful amalmagation of hindi and malayalam composed by ar rahman reintroduced with jazz/swing instrumentalisation. Believe me its pretty good
The vocal music teacher trains you on breath control, the ability to go up in notes, and land on a half note higher than the projected note on which the song is to be sung. This starts at ages 5-6-7 and the teacher watches how you sing and corrects on the spot any errors and child rehearses until it is correct and then are told to do riyaaz ( a warm up and getting your voice tuned up) every day before coming to the class. The reason you are able to see that the singers are able to do breath control by the time they are in their early teens, get very good on modulations and riffs and also show the ability to control pitch on the note on which the song is composed. India is a vast reservoir of musical talent because every family makes the children learn music ( vocal or instrument) and only if the child does not show much interest they direct them to other pastimes like sports. Girls are generally keen on music and dance whereas boys try to do sports and music. Music is part of the culture and is the soul of the nation!
People. Check out "Konnakol - The Carnatic Rhythm language" already. There is nothing like it anywhere. Especially from the PoV of a percussionist. When they say "Tha-Ri-Ki-Ta" etc.. it's all Konnakol. That's how you vocalize the percussive sounds.
@Waleska Herrera : Do watch this video: ruclips.net/video/iurhjlBum0o/видео.html | "Konnakol - The Carnatic Rhythm language" : V Shivapriya & BR Somashekar Jois | Konnakol Duet | MadRasana Unplugged Quote : Konnakkol :"the most traditional, classical & ancient vocal percussive art form of India; the mother of all percussive languages"
Indian classical music is based on a guru - shishya tradition (meaning a teacher - student tradition) . Very often that could be father - son / daughter mother - son / daughter passing on the legacy . Check out Unnikrishnan & uttara , ShivKumar Sharma - Rahul Sharma , Amjad Ali Khan- Ayaan and Amaan , Allah Rakha - Zakir Hussain. Of course , there are instances where the children move on to other teachers to pickup more nuances . Welcome to the great Ocean of Indian classical music . 😀🙏🙏🙏
@Waleska Herrera : DO watch this incredible performance. In your own favourite phrase, you'll be really "blown away", especially by the two young RUclips stars : Sooryagayathri and Rahul Vellal, accompanied by their Guru, Kuldeep M. Pai. ruclips.net/video/gYiRRS1Qpu8/видео.html Kāliṅga Nartana Tillānā | Vande Guru Paramparaam | Sooryagayathri, Rahul Vellal, Kuldeep M Pai
At the same time, especially during the intro, it seemed so uncannily like a Kathak recital from Lucknow almost 2000 kms. to the North. To my ears 70% to 80% seemed so similar to Kathak. Even then it was Tamil, I could almost hear someone sing out 'Morey Kanha' in Hindi.
If I am not mistaken this is a song from a Tamil movie where Kamal Haasan plays a Kathak teacher (among other things) and this song is him teaching his students. That is why you hear the similarity.
It is called TARANA which is the spoken beats....every type of beat has a name like if singer says DHIN the tabla player will play DHIN on tabla, for example a tarana- dhina dhina dhina na dhina na dhina dhin dhin dhin tirkit aan o dhe....all these beats has to be played on percussion instrument....like sargam are spoken notes, Tarana are spoken beats
08:54 Yes indeed one learns tabla from a teacher/master. Playing the tabla involves various bols (hit on the tabla and dagga) which is executed from your fingers, hands. These bols are arranged in various rythmic patterns (known as taal).
in the end you were recommended ghoomar ..i would recommend you watch that too..in fact there is bollywood version of it with deepika in it from the movie padmavat..highly recommend it
Loved it! Also checkout '5 peace band' video from berkeley featuring Shankar Mahadevan. You'll find needed details in the description of the video. Would love to see your reaction.

That Ginger guys is actually an Arab Iraqi violinist, he is a lecturer at berkeley. Yes he said people always mistaken him for Irish or Scottish person LMAO. The one that playing the lute or guitar is greek if i'm not mistaken.
You ask very good questions like, "What is the philosophy of tabla?" If you get to meet a tabla master, ask it to him or her and be ready to camp out for a few days. ☺
the beginning part the song retells the story of Lord Krishna. The rest of the song is about Radha being teased by the mischevious avatar of the god Vishnu who she loves. The song is indeed in Tamil.
Can you guys check out more songs from a specific language in India and make it a series....it would be cooler and you will be able to understand the sonic differences btw the main stream carnatic and Hindustani classic.
Please check ‘konnakol’, percussion language used in Carnatic music adapted to Hindustani and called as ‘nom tom’. It will answer many of your questions.
Guys you GOTTA check out hairaan hua from coke studio Pakistan season 12 it will blow your minds. Music, vocals, poetry, traditional instruments with new techniques, I think you’ll love it
Hi Efra &Waleska, if you really want to be blown away, listen to the Jugalbandi (Face-off) between Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha in Monterey Festival 1967. R.S on Sitar and A.R on Tabla. You'll be blown away for sure. R.S is the recipient of Bharat Ratna, highest award from India. His daughters Anoushka Shankar, world famous Sitarist and Norah Jones, singer par-excellence. A.R's son is Zakir Hussain, a world famous Tabla player. Shorter version: ruclips.net/video/lk60ObnbIOk/видео.html Longer version is given here: ruclips.net/video/3LcL0EmTxxE/видео.html
react to 'mohe rang do laal' a pure classical song sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Pandit Birju Maharaj and performed by Deepika Padukone in the dance form of 'Kathak' where it is mostly about expression. You'll love it.
The idea that Raag only plays a part in some stretches of a composition is false. Even many non-classical pieces of music are based on one or more raags which underpin the entire composition. In carnatic music such compositions are identified as being in ragamalika (a garland of raags). The vocalization of individual notes, sargam (swara kalpana in carnatic music) is always just one part of a composition and never the entirity. As for the vocalization of percussive sounds, this has a long tradition in both Hindustani and Carnatic music, and when learning percussive instruments like tabla or mridangam, students are taught certain vocalizations for specific sounds played on their instrument. In Carnatic music there is a separate percussive form called konnokol that takes this to a higher level. I recommend this video for an advanced example of konnakol, pretty sure Efra would go crazy: ruclips.net/video/iurhjlBum0o/видео.html
Guys I would like you to react on a telugu song called “Anati neeyara” from the movie Swathikiranam. This movie was a musical hit. All the songs are beautifully written and sung .
Hi.. you seem to have stuck with a notion that raag is something done in between a song. Raag or raaga or raagam, is the scale itself. particularly in classical music a composition is usually composed in a single raaga. everything that comes out of vocals and instruments other that percussion, is composed in those set of notes only. if they sing out enough of the notes , the swaras, then you can pick up its ascend and descend route.
Was there a mistake in the edit? There's a whole minute of the song missing in the beginning. With that out of the way, here's a bit about how you approach tabla as a student. It comes down to two different things that need to be learned in the right order: technique and visualization of rhythm. There are different "gharanas" or schools of learning. My teacher has Zakir Hussain himself in his teaching ancestry tree, so to speak, so my gharana is the Punjabi gharana. There is a specific style of playing, a specific repertoire of set pieces, and a set way of learning as well for each gharana, and my style of playing is quite different from Lucknow or Banarasi gharana. When it comes to accompaniment, it's only been in the last couple hundred years or so that the tabla has become a major instrument, in the last hundred years or so has it become a major solo instrument, and only in the last 50 years has it become a superstar instrument. The fundamentals of tabla are clarity and stamina, first and foremost. I had to memorize the bols (spoken notation) PERFECTLY for every piece I ever learned. When I was first learning finger technique, my teacher would not even teach me basic compositions or fixed pieces until I had my slow speed clarity and placement absolutely down pat. He also would not allow me to increase the speed of my playing until I could play the same 4-note phrase, sometimes even the same notes, over and over again at a slow speed until I could do it perfectly, every single time, without conscious effort. Then, and only then, was I permitted to start experimenting musically as a student, and that's where the visualization comes in. You learn how to manipulate dynamics, polyrhythms, emphasis, and accompany more intricate melodic arrangements, keeping in mind the tone, raag, taal, tempo, and meaning of the song. I can very easily recognize polyrhythms and visualize the offbeats inside the main beats, which is why (or maybe because) mental math is also easy for me. That's why tabla playing can vary so greatly between fundamental tempo-keeping and frenetic, fast-paced polyrhythmic soloing. The same thing applies to mridangam as well, but since it's a MUCH older instrument, the level of rhythmical mastery that mridangam players are required to attain is WAAAAYYY crazier. Think rhythms nested within other rhythms, but FOUR TIMES. Like a Russian doll of different taals.

Berklee ft vijay prakash song is 'Manmohini' almost requested in every video also in feature Friday live.
Pls react more to Tamil music.
please react to "Pookal pookum by K S Harishankar" South Indian song🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Efra and Wale, I have been a tabla player myself, this is the only instrument I learnt through the Indian classical route 🙂. The way I would describe a tabla player’s job is pretty close to your assessment of him carrying the heart beat of the song. Tabla is the constant time piece/tempo of the song, the tempo would rarely change during songs generally; sometimes it does though, during some classical compositions. An analogy to that would be a progressive rock track in the west. What you feel as the tempo changing is, mostly the tabla player double/four/eight timing keeping the tempo constant.
Watch Berkley indian ensemble ft shreya ghoshal -mannipaya... It's really soulfoul
Believe me its pretty good
Each instrument is the extension of the Artist...the heart beat of the instrument is Lord Nadarajah, the Patron of Indian Arts and Music.
Yes the composition is masterpiece but, the lyrics is next level
@Waleska Herrera : Do watch this video: ruclips.net/video/iurhjlBum0o/видео.html | "Konnakol - The Carnatic Rhythm language" : V Shivapriya & BR Somashekar Jois | Konnakol Duet | MadRasana Unplugged
Quote : Konnakkol :"the most traditional, classical & ancient vocal percussive art form of India; the mother of all percussive languages"
You guys should look at kalinga narthana thillana from kuldeep m pai's channel
@Waleska Herrera : DO watch this incredible performance. In your own favourite phrase, you'll be really "blown away", especially by the two young RUclips stars : Sooryagayathri and Rahul Vellal, accompanied by their Guru, Kuldeep M. Pai.

Please react to Jiya Jale composition by Berklee Indian Ensemble. It is one of their popular cover.it would definitely blow your mind.
This songs video song is a greater bliss to eyes as well.
@@EagleOverTheSea Try the name 'Sagar Sangam'. The movie was dubbed in all South Indian languages. The music director is Telugu, from Nellore.
@@contemporarymatters8106 I have seen that scene where he demonstrates the different dance forms. 🙂
Indian classical singer

It is called TARANA which is the spoken beats....every type of beat has a name like if singer says DHIN the tabla player will play DHIN on tabla, for example a tarana- dhina dhina dhina na dhina na dhina dhin dhin dhin tirkit aan o dhe....all these beats has to be played on percussion instrument....like sargam are spoken notes, Tarana are spoken beats
Please explore more of Ajay-Atul..!!
You should definitely start with "Yad Lagla.." from movie Sairat..
Wow, this is amazing. I like the beat and rhythm of this. It's really catchy.
Every Indian composition is highly structured.
08:54 Yes indeed one learns tabla from a teacher/master. Playing the tabla involves various bols (hit on the tabla and dagga) which is executed from your fingers, hands. These bols are arranged in various rythmic patterns (known as taal).
React to original classical music (cranatic music) and classical dance of tamilnadu in one song.
in the end you were recommended ghoomar ..i would recommend you watch that too..in fact there is bollywood version of it with deepika in it from the movie padmavat..highly recommend it

Watch original version... Kamal Hasan's performance with subtitles...... Kathak traditional dance
React to ennodu nee irunthal song from the movie I. Sung by sid sriram and composed by AR RAHMAN
the beginning part the song retells the story of Lord Krishna.
IF you really wanna hear nice tabla then watch 'Zakir hussain with rakesh chaurasia'. Its about an hr long but also a short 8 min version as well

in the intro the singer was directing the tabla player.
You guys have got to check Solar and moonbyul's performance where they swapped parts, it's called "Your song my song" its so good
The violin player is from Jordan and the stringed instrument player is from Greece.
To this man every Indian percussion instrument is a Tabla. That’s all he knows.
You should definitely try watching #pranavalaya song..

It's not.. Have you ever heard about Sanskrit😅
@@kamalkrishna8125 i stand corrected , however tamil is the oldesr living language .

Carnatic music is the basic and infinity to the music.it is found in Tamil Nadu , India.you once visit to Tamil Nadu
Guys I would like you to react on a telugu song called “Anati neeyara” from the movie Swathikiranam. This movie was a musical hit. All the songs are beautifully written and sung .
Though this is a Tamil song, this composition is in Kuchchupudi style of Odissa region.
Hi.. you seem to have stuck with a notion that raag is something done in between a song.
Listen more Tamil songs plz❤️
