    Ive had many years of cringed art, and me trying to copy a style that isn't mine. So many wasted years... I've struggled with my art style before as well, but then I realized something.
    Your style shouldn't have to be "discovered". You know you've found your style when you sit down, sketch what you *feel* and not what you *see*, and like it. You know those pictures you make that aren't great but you love them so, so much? Its because they're *your* style, and that cannot be replicated. Just embrace your natural style, build off of it, and it will make you a happier person.

    I think it's normal for artists to play about with art styles. I've always maintained, that artists are revolving doors when it comes to style. We will use and explore many different ways to do something, and this includes our choice of medium. Those of us who settle as 'one trick ponies'. Say those who stop at realisim, will soon stagnate. It is human nature to explore and to expand, finding something fresh and new is what keeps us going. Recently,
    I've seen quite a few You Tube artists questioning they're 'style'. Nothing they are doing is unusual, they've yet to work that bit out. Drawing the same concept, say woman's faces constantly, is what causes 'burn out', Exploring new things to draw or paint is essentially what is the essence of an artist. Not being afraid to grab the wind by the tail. Is why the likes of Picasso, Van Gogh, Devinchi,, and many others have painting styles that are as different as day and night. My advise is listen to your inner artist, don't be afraid to take that journey, it most probably will work out, if not there are plenty of new opportunities in art to explore, and think.of the fun you will have getting there!
    LOVE your winged Hare, and a good tale to go with it.. :-)

    I love the story and picture of the Skvader! I love folklore (the more regional the better) from different countries AND I bought Gansei Tambei watercolors after I saw a video of you using the Starry Nights pallete, and I LOVE them. They might be my most favorite medium now. It's snowing very very hard here and piling up, and then a ping from my phone tells me Kattvalk has uploaded a new video. Best. Day. Ever. Thanks for doing what you do and inspiring me always! ❤️

  • @margarethanson8330
    @margarethanson8330 6 лет назад

    I'm so glad that you mention trying out new mediums and how it tends to "block" your original style. I have been trying to combine inks, stamping, and watercolor paints with my favorite mediums. During this process, I have learned many things but at the same time, I seem to have lost my style. This almost makes me feel like a failure in what used to be my joy and complete sense of satisfaction. Yes, we need to try new things but perhaps we should limit ourselves to these learning experiences to our "messy journals" and allow the free creativity to flow in our personal style on our art pieces, adding new mediums if we feel that what we have learned in our messy journals will compliment our original art pieces. Keep it up my "Happy Cat"!

    I'd just like to say that I don't think that using different mediums really affects your ability to develop a style unless you're trying to tie that style specifically to a medium. Since you really enjoy testing out new stuff and right now you're more of a jack of all trades, it may be within your best interest to try and develop a stylistic way of drawing your favorite subjects that can be done with basically any medium. Though, I also find it strange that you think that you haven't developed a style. Aside from the more realistic figures (which every artist should be able to do, since good stylistic art starts from understanding anatomy and realism) most of your art pieces have a lot of features that are similar to each other, thus making it a style.

    • @lucians5125
      @lucians5125 6 лет назад

      i don't think she was trying to say her style is linked to a medium, but that additionally to the style problems she's concerned about, she also hasn't specialised in a certain medium yet?

    • @KazukiriMishamiota
      @KazukiriMishamiota 6 лет назад +4

      Oh no, I got that. What I was saying is that I don't see why it's important to specialize in one medium unless the style you want is linked specifically to that medium.

    I think one of the best ways for discovering your art style is to start off by referencing pictures from other styles for as long as you can. I know this just sounds like you’re copying the style of someone else, but in reality over many months or even years, it will start to form itself into something more tailored to your own personal preference. For me, i copied pictures exactly from the concept art of Kid Icarus Uprising for about six weeks straight, and that helped me find a good foundation to add different skills that i learn over the years. Now, my style doesn’t even look like the art from the game anymore!
    For someone like you who wants to find their style again, I’d say to look at a piece of your art that you’re proud of and start to study it to see which tips and tricks came from each point of reference, like “the hands came from this specific how to draw book, the shading came from this cartoon i used to watch,” etc. I always do this when i have trouble finding my style, and it helps me realize the roots of where i learned to draw and how far I’ve let my own style stray from my original concepts. I hope this helps!

    Try all the mediums and styles you can and you want. When you tried them all, you can be sure what medium(s) and style you want to focus on because you like it best. All the others are great to have to play around with, but you will know what to turn to when you go for your particular style that you decided on and developped after being sure of that one being your absolute favorite :)
    I really love this artwork! It is absolutely amazing and cute and funny , but most of all , CUTE!

    Reminds me that I need to dust off my Kuretake Gansai Tambi and Starry colors. I love how glittery and metallic these paints are. Here where I live, the local mythical creatures are sasquach and jackalopes. There's even a statue of a sasquach on one of the old highways in Washington State. You don't even know it's there unless someone else knows where exactly it's at. One of those 'blink and you miss it' kind of things.
    I love how your drawing turned out too. Sometimes Kuretake can be tricky to work with. I think because these are ink pigmented paints.

    Ii feel ya Doll, I am always trying to figure out what my style is, or if I have my own style at all, I get so into doing different supplies and trying new things that i dont just focus on one kind of art and not sure if thats a good thing out not, but i know i want to keep doing my cartoony pieces but i also know i want to keep working on landscapes and portraits so for now those are going to be my focus plus just having fun, but i can get carried away with color lol

    But I'm also looking forward to a video where you talk about finding your own artstyle and stuff, because I'm currently struggling a bit myself too, I like trying different styles and things but it's hard to decide whether I should stick to one style or not.

    Hey kattvalk! I want to tell you that whenever i see one of your artworks, i instantly recongise it! So changing little things here and there in each artwork doesnt really affect your signature look much if thats what youre worried about. I honestly like working with different media myself because i think that each medium portrays a different feeling (so depending on what im aiming for). But i know everyone's different, so if what you wan is one specific art style, go for it theres nothing wrong with that but also keep in mind that having different art styles doesnt make you indistinguishable and that theres nothing wrong with it either :))

    finding your style of art and the right medium, can be a very long process. It takes a lot of time to develop one specific style, wether it be cartoony, anime, realistic, semi realistic, or abstract. People have a natural hand at certain ways of drawing in lots of different styles and methods. But other than that, artists tend to find something and stick with it

    I know I'm a bit late. But I don't think you should stress too much about an art style. Why? Your style is always going to evolve because you're always going to improve. So instead of stressing about it, have fun experimenting. Let yourself make mistakes and try new things. Don't worry about making yourself unique. (Technically, none of us are unique.) A truly unique style will come to you freely, so don't put too much emphasis on it when you're creating art.
