I grew up listening to Joe Negri. He was a fixture in Leo Strini's Pittsburgh Pops in the mid-sixties. Dad played in the Pops, so I was at most of their concerts. I miss those days. Listening to this brings it all back.
Mr Negri, a young guitarist just posed this question on a Facebook post: What is the difference between a rock and jazz player. My reply, coming from a rock/pop background, was that I’ve always been fascinated with the intricate chords and fluid timing of jazz players . I told him to look you up on RUclips as a wonderful example of virtuosity. Sir, for your talent and more importantly, for sharing that gift with us all these years, my hat is off to you 🙏
You have shared so very many beautiful personal gifts with all of us, both as our favorite handyman and as a massive musical talent. As a child of that wonderful Neighborhood and a player myself, thank you very much, Mr. Negri!
After putting in a lot of time, miles, and life it all shows. From one guitarist to another. Thanks for doing your part to help tame mankind with your gift and talent.
Wow, I didn’t know you were on RUclips! It’s almost criminal that you don’t have a large number of subscribers - you’re a legend! Thanks for uploading this, great playing of course.
Beautiful, just beautiful Joe! I remember going to Mandolin Bros. the 1st time and I saw a Bene and asked if I "might play it" Jay said play anything you like just take off anything that might scratch. It played like butter. $19,000 was a fair tag on that one!
I'm just starting to learn guitar, and love the way I can hear each separate note of these chords. Such a rich and thoughtful arrangement, too. Bravo, Joe!
Hi Joe, Salvatore here. It's soooo very nice to see you again here,, it's been many years since I last saw you on PBS tele!!! I always got so happy when the show would have you on, and of course the music store! LOL! I'm also a guitarist as well, and have studied the style of Larry Carlton very seriously. And my only desire, is to give the listener(s) the goose bumps, to make them feel the intent of the melodies, in a good, warm way! You were an inspiration for me, along with Pizzarelli, Pass, Al Caiola, and Tony Mottola!!!!! God bless you and your family for the happiness, for the musical helping hand(s), and the welcome relief of a positive heartfelt song in this world! Ciao Joe!!!!
So happy to have found this gem...beautifully filmed and played. I used to watch all the antics of Handyman Negri and Dr. Bill Platypus in the neighborhood with Lady Aberlin (swoon) along with my three sons (not the television series with Fred MacMurray...my very own three sons)...I always enjoyed the music with Johnny Costa (of course) and when Handyman broke out the guitar! Beautiful playing...
LOVE IT, Mr. Negri...I'm 51 now and I was watching YOU on TV before I even knew who "I" was! HAHA...I occasionally had the pleasure of driving you to the Airport back in the early 90's and later I got to introduce you to my Late Mother and my Baby Daughter who is now 15...You and "Speedy McFeely" were at Idlewild Park that day....You're a great man and one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Thank you.
Beautiful, Joe. Just to let you know I've taken some video recorded Bebop lessons (Bebop DoJo on Truefire) from Sheryl Bailey, who's a great player and educator. She professes that you were her teacher; now I know why she's so good!!
Grew up watching you on KDKA. So good to hear you play again. Now that I think about it, i don't know if it was KDKA or not, but I do know that you were influential enough for me to search on your name. Grazie amico mio.
Mr. Negri, I just learned about you from another buddy who is a jazz guitarist, and really enjoyed your playing. I will enjoy more of your videos and let others know about your playing as well. Thanks!
Joe this is Steve Gonsalves from Boston. Once many years ago I had the pleasure to share the stage with you. Rebeca Paris was working there and asked me to play. Sure you won't remember but it was a fun night. I remember doing Stomping as the Savoy and for some reason I started in D rather than Eb. In any case nice playing guitar with you.
I've loved your music since I was fascinated by it on Mr. Rogers. That was my favorite show and the reason that I've been a jazz fan since before I gave music labels!
Brilliant, elegant, and effortlessly virtuosic... ...exactly as we all expect from you, sir. Your intro, based on the last 8 of the tune, but in the key of 'E,' had me fooled, until you modulated into 'G,' and I thought, "Man, he's done it again..."
Joe, even before I picked up the guitar in the 70's, your playing fascinated me. Did you transcribe that arrangement? Really beautiful. Any pointers for someone who wants to learn how to play solo guitar/chord melody?

Joe Negri and Johnny Costa... Mr Rogers had some pretty fine musician friends.

I , Carl Anzalone, once sang "Here's That Rainy Day" on Joe Negri's T.V. show years ago accompanied by my brother Tom Anzalone on guitar.
I still remember the concert I was able to accompany you at IUP.
Beautiful arrangement, Mr. Negri, and your sound is so rich! Thanks for sharing.
The first jazz guitar player I ever saw play on TV and he still plays just as good as he did then !

Wow!
Very underrated jazz guitar player. Actually, he was in the same league as Herb Ellis and Joe Pass.
Incredible!
Superb!!
I love it!
Does he perform around the Pittsburgh area? I wouldn't mind attending a jazz concert where he was featured.
great song
Absolutely delicious.
