Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Much appreciated
I have used a variety of fibers, and you are right, some don't really need much stiffening if any. Yes, the glue and water mix will make beads cloudy, tried it and had the same problem. I had trouble ironing starch and beads too, but not anymore. Seems as long as I use good quality beads and a good spray starch that I can just spray the tatting, beads and all, and then iron around and even on top of the beads. It works well, and no cloudy film on the beads. Hope this helps! :)
I'd only starch if you are making jewelry or something like a bowl. For most everything else, it isn't necessary. :) I really like the natural lay of tatting, after just an ironing - it is beautiful. :) Happy tatting, Erin! :)
I learned to tat using your videos. You are a wonderful teacher. I noticed that you were not making videos for awhile. I think I read somewhere that you were sick. I am so glad to see you back to making videos and feeling better. I have really missed your videos. I actually gave up tatting for awhile because I could not find instructions for some of the patterns that I wanted to do. I am back to tatting and needed a refresher course and stumbled upon some of your more recent videos. Again, I am so glad you are back to what you are meant to do, teach.
Thank you so much! Hope you are happily tatting again! : )
thank you for teaching us the art of tatting. Could you please start videos on dolies and edging. Thanks
I use the exact same. Works great. Love your work. Thanx for sharin your videos wit us.
Useful advice, thank you. Have you tryed linen and silk in your works? Some fibers seems not need heavy stiffening. I mixed glue and water 1:1 and use it to the earrings but it makes beads cloudy. I'm having troubles about ironing starch to the earrings, I use some bigger beads and bicones as a centerpoints
Hello Katy, I also use the faultless starch for my Earring's and it works great. I have a question about how do I add some shine to my Earring's?
I'm very new to the tatting world. I've just been practicing rings and chains and I am fixing to start my first big project. Is starching necessary? If so where do you buy starch at? I've never bought starch before.
You are always so helpful, thank you so much.
Glad to help!
Katy, I bought a clear starch at Jo-Ann's, it looks just like water, Mary Ellen's Best Press "the clear starch and sizing alternative" and says it does not leave a residue or shine or flaking, spotting and acid free. I am tatting earrings right now and feel this clear starch should be ideal. It is NOT cheap though!! But a little goes a long way.
That sounds perfect! Hope it worked great!!! Happy tatting!!! ~ Katy
Thanks for the great tip. Do you need to put a clothe between the tatted piece and the iron? When you do iron are you using a steam setting or a dry iron?
You can put a cloth. I usually don't unless it is a very fine thread that the item is tatted with, then I use a cloth. In that case I use a very thin cloth. I use dry iron for the step in which I iron after starching.
If you have beads in your project, do they look good when starched?
I primarily use glass beads. and yes, they look good when starched, using this starch. Sometimes if I apply a lot of starch I will go back after wards and gently wipe beads with a damp cloth, to remove any residue. But that is seldom needed.
love your videos. I think I learned to needle tat several years ago watching your short video on Mary Jane's website. I need to pick it back up. I'm so glad and thankful you are doing these videos! Bless you. I'd love to see videos on simple edgings and attaching them to various things - pillowcases, clothes etc... do you have patterns?
What size needle do you use and what kind/type/size thread oh and color? I love your work. Thank you!
Rachelle, yes that was me that you saw several years ago on MaryJane's. Life has kind of gotten in the way of my video making, but I hope to be able to get back to it soon, and would love to make more tatting videos. I do have a few up: ruclips.net/p/PLgIs0n4wYVzOcTTqqtjR-T8HqKc2-UJ60 . I have a few patterns for sale on Etsy and Craftsy as well ( www.etsy.com/shop/RustiKate , www.craftsy.com/user/1348904/pattern-store ), but no edging patterns yet. I was actually going to make a few more patterns this next week, I'll try and do an edging or two and make them available. I like to use different size threads depending on how fine I want my edging to be, so goes with needle choice. But for most of my projects I use a size 5 needle and a size 10 thread, my favorite thread is DMC Baroque Crochet Cotton in Ecru. You can connect with me more, and share your projects on facebook.com/RustiKate if you'd like. Happy tatting! :)

Thank you for the helpful hints. I'm new to the tatting scene. Have you ever added any of your tatting pieces to clothing, such as, jeans or the ends of sleeves on a top?
So glad that you are tatting! Yes, I have added tatting to many kinds of clothing and fabrics. It works great and is so beautiful! You should completely try it! :) Would you like to see videos or patterns of such projects? Happy tatting! :)
Yes PLEASE! I would like to add some pieces to the front pockets of a pair of jeans. I also really like the earring in the pic above. Do you have a video demo of that? Beautiful work.
thank you for the helpful hint
helpful, thank you
That's exactly what I do!
